Up In The Air

Before the season started everyone was talking about how the Buckeyes could go undefeated this year.  I feel like we have been an average football team through 3 games.  Even though we have been average, the B1G isn't a very good conference.  I was thinking we could be a 10-2 team before the season started.  After 3 weeks of football, how do you feel OSU will finish? Use realistic thought and not your heart.

Still a solid chance we go undefeated. But I could also see us dropping a game or two with more bad defense and if our offense gets stuck in a rut.

I still think they could be a 2-4 loss team.  The B1G is horrible, so I tend to think more around the 2 loss side of things.  After week 6 we could realistically be 4-2.

They'll adjust, and make the most of this season. 10-2 is reasonably optimistic, 12-0 isn't THAT far-fetched, either. Step away from the ledge.

I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.

I said 10-2 based on our crap schedule before the season and I'm sticking with it. I don't see a single team on our schedule that we can't/shouldn't beat but I anticipate we'll lose against a tough opponent in a tough game and then let slip one that we should've taken care of. Honestly, I've been thinking about this more and more lately...doesn't anyone else see Rex Burkhead and Taylor Martinez giving us fits again this year based on what we've just seen out of our defense??

Nebraska, Michigan State, Illinois, Purdue and Michigan- will all be hard fought games

Penn State don't laugh too hard or dismiss, may be difficult as well, by that point in the season.

Guess we'll have to see what happens.

@Bolt... I hope they don't give us too many fits... That will be my first experience in The Shoe and I do not want to see the Buckeyes lose.  I saw them lose at Purdue last year after talking trash the whole game and I wasn't happy... I still think we are a 10-2 maybe 9-3 team as long as one of the losses doesn't come against scUM.

The Big Ten is absolutely terrible this year. The games that I worry about are MSU, Nebraska and Purdue. I honestly don't think they'll have any trouble with Michigan. This team should go 10-2, but they are young and implementing a new system, so 4 losses definitely would not be shocking.

Bolt's picture
Bolt on 18 Sep 2012 - 5:53pm #

Nebraska will be the home game to attend other than tsun this year. If it's your first time in the 'Shoe, cherish it all and take in all the festivities and traditions you can...but just be prepared that it could turn to a sour ending. Hopefully not though. It is a team that I have full confidence that we're better than.

I'm definitely going to enjoy it... Should be a great game.  I'm pretty sure I will be attending Eat Too, Brutus while I am there.  I will be going to the game at Indiana and will be back in Columbus when we play Illinois.  Hopefully my viewing experiences will leave me with a 3-1 record in person.

I saw them lose at Purdue last year... It sucked... My first OSU game and we lost in OT after Braxton made a ridiculous play to tie the game and we missed the extra point.

Bolt's picture

Ouch. I've seen 'em lose at Purdue as well. 2005. Definitely not a fun experience. Didn't enjoy their fans either visit or West Lafayette much either. Obviously had a better time in '07 for the victory. We got to hit up a cornfield maze on the way home, though. That was fun for the first couple hours...and then the next two hours I just really wanted out and wanted to go home. All we got was a bloody cup of cider for free for completing the maze and hitting all the checkpoints.

I know there were people saying OSU could go undefeated this year, but those same people who actually thought that (and those who actually listened) are/were delusional.  Any rational Buckeye fan would have surely been able to tell you what a farce that prediction was/is.

beginning of the year i figured 8-4 or 9-3 was likely. the big10 however, is weaker than i thought they would be. so i think if the defense can step it up, play 10 percent better, and the offense gets more comfortable, i see 11-1, and i dont know the team that causes one loss.12-0 is not out of the question, but not likely either.

I think we'll lose a few games. We have no run game outside of Braxton, if that's shut down what's next? Relying on the passing game? Good luck with that.

I hope I'm wrong on that though and the running game comes along, but our OL is average at best so I don't see it changing. Miller has amazing potential, but it's going to take time for him to become the passer most people think he's capable of being.

Honestly I am more convinced that we could go undefeated now than before the season because of how poor the B1G has played.  Now I still think we lose, probably at least twice, because it is not easy to go undefeated.

@Scarlet_Buckeye  I wasn't one of those who said the Buckeyes would go undefeated and i have no idea how many games they will win or lose but if they should go undefeated would you then be the delusional one?

The BIG is horrible this year. Not many teams with good passing in the conference this year. And if the wrapping up starts happening nobody will be able to run on the outside on us. Its not out of the question to go undefeated. Hardest games being Nebraska at home and Michigan at home with both teams limping away with wins against us last year and our offense is light years better this year.

Nebraska is a head case team too. Any team that hangs with them or goes up a few scores early and the Huskers give up. All the talk of Martinez's new throwing and the later the game went with UCLA hanging in there and he went back to bad habits with the ball. Head case. Penn. st could be tough but we play really well in happy valley for some reason. And im not really all that worried about Michigan. They havent really shown us much to think that they are any different from last year. Not worried about Whisky and the only worry I have with MSU is Bell. But it has been shown that he can be contained and when MSU has to resort to throwing the ball its UGLY. There seems to be no quit in our boys right now and that alone tells me that 12-0 is not out of the question.

8-4 if we continue to play like we have, 10-2 if we improve a little on each side of the ball, 12-0 if we play to our potential

10-2 ,but 8-4 would be a tremendous improvment and would please the powers that be at TOSU.GO BUCKS!

I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.

I would say that to argue that OSU will go undefeated might be a bit optimistic (delusional, if you prefer inflamatory language), but to argue that OSU might go undefeated is a simple consequence of fairly appraising the competition.  For anybody saying that OSU can't go undefeated, show me one game that the Buckeyes can't win.

I've said it before, but since this thread keeps coming up I guess I'll say it again, once you accept that OSU can beat each team individually on the schedule, it is a rational conclusion that they can beat all the teams on the schedule.

I think we can win every game on the schedule, but we can't continue to play like we have in order to do that... If we start to come around and figure out both sides of the ball then I think we can go undefeated.  The B1G is awful so 12-0 is realistic IF we play well.  Here are the games we can lose if we DON'T play well:

MSU

Nebraska

Purdue

Illinois

scUM

I originally posed the question to see what everyone thought since we've had the chance to see 3 weeks of football and all the B1G teams play.

I wouldn't say it's delusional to think that we could go undefeated. I don't think we will but there's no game on our schedule in which we look by any means overmatched and should lose that particular game. I'm expecting 10-2 but I wouldn't be absolutely blown away if they went unbeaten just due to the total crap that is this year's schedule. It'd take Brax being ridiculous all year and plenty of luck (much like '02) to come out on top in some hard fought B1G battles but it's not delusional to think it's possible.

It's a weird thing to say that this team has not played quite as well as we had hoped yet, and our chances of going undefeated look better than they did before the season began, but that's the case.  Ohio State hasn't been quite what we thought they would be, but neither has the rest of the B1G.  TSUN got blown out by 'Bama more than I thought they would and doesn't look any different than last year, Wisconsin is pedestrian, Nebraska is same old Nebraska, and MSU just isn't the same MSU as we've seen the past 2 years.  PSU got back on the winning track this past week, though Navy is pretty bad - I don't buy that that's all of a sudden a tough game now.  Indiana is typical Indiana, Illinois is typical Illinois, and that leaves us with Purdue.  Purdue may be tougher than I thought, but at home, in a revenge game - don't bet on an upset there.  Guys, it could happen.  It's not delusional to think that.  Name me one of the next 9 games that OSU has less than a 50% chance of winning.

Class of 2010.

I think we could go undefeated, but most teams alway have let down games. We have more talent than anyone on our schedule, the only team close to us is that team up north, but with the struggles of our defense and some of the defensive schemes we are using I see at least 1 loss, maybe 2. I wish we would quit playing zone and stick to man to man and start bringing a little pressure to the quarterbacks, and actually tackle and stop dropping sure picks, then we could go undefeated.
