TTUN or Notre Dame?

OK, I despise both the team that wears Cobalt and Sun up north and the Irish.  Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't even consider rooting for MeatChicken.  (I thoroughly enjoyed watching them get destroyed by Alabama.)  But the B1G is having such a down year this year, that I'm starting to think it might be best all things considered if.. <choke> ...the Cobalt and Sun beat the Irish.  What do the rest of you think?

My two favorite teams every weekend are the Buckeyes and who ever is playing Notre Dame.  I know, that means that every year they meet, TTUN is one of my favorite teams on one weekend during the season.  So be it.  This week end - Go TTUN - can not bring myself to mention that deep ocean color.......

Does it really matter at this point?  I don't think TSUN beating Notre Dame changes a lot of the perception of the B1G.  It doesn't improve it much, and the B1G could easily ruin any goodwill they got from that win and then some during bowl season.  Besides, it doesn't matter much for OSU, unless you're worried about the AP National Championship, which there's an outside chance of winning even if OSU goes 12-0.  So, I'll root for Notre Dame this week...and other select weeks where they play a program I loathe more than them.

I'm thinking Notre Dame 31, TSUN 20.

I study Pharmacy at Wayne State University in Detroit, which is right downtown, so I get to read the DetNews, the DetFreePress etc. you should read some of these articles they put out about Denard Robinson, it's a slobber fest.  He's had two good games, not great, good games.. against bad teams, and the top story is "HOW WILL ND STOP THE MIGHTY DENARD?" as if it's some sort of impossible feat.. mmmm I know !! Watch tape on Alabama's Defense against him.. they didn't just shut him down because of "NFL Caliber" players they have, (of course that does make a difference) but it's the mastery of Nick Saban's defensive scheme which put their talented players in position to shut him down completely.  Don't get me wrong the talent of Alabama immensely helped them stop Robinson.  And you'll see Saturday a Defense from ND who may not be as talented as Alabama, but very talented in their own right... run the same schemes and sets that Alabama applied against Michigan, and Denard is gonna have a really tough game, again.

I've always rooted for ND against UM, that will never ever ever ever change. Ever.

hail2victors9's picture
hail2victors9 on 20 Sep 2012 - 7:57am #

This is a different team than the last two years, on both sides.  I think the newspapers were referring to Denard's 948 yards of total offense and 7 TDs in his two games vs the Irish, not his 2012 showing, although 1,050 total yards and 10 TDs isn't anything to turn your nose up to.  Especially after battling through 'Bama.

Only game of the year where I will--without fail--root for Michigan.  ND is the most spoiled, entitled, arrogant fanbase out there, my derison for them is without question.

Granted, if UM loses, it won't stop me from busting out in lulz.  I have to admit, though--last year's game was pretty boss.  The stupidest finish I've ever seen in a college football game (okay, this side of the "5th Down" and "The Play"), but it was pretty awesome regardless.

If the Bog Ten doesn't start winning against teams outside the conference then perception will continue to fall. It takes more than a year to change that, therefore it hurts OSU's perception. IF MSU, Wis, Iowa, Neb, PSU were all doing good I wouldn't feel bad about people rooting against UM, but the Big Ten needs every ranked team win it can get at this point before we turn into th ACC.

Sofa Kingdom's picture

It never ceases to amaze me, that fans aren't smart enough to root for The B1G unconditionally.  You should want the conference to win ALL their OOC games.  Even if that means sucking it up and pulling for scUM to score a go ahead touchdown late in the fourth, to beat a PAC 12, or XII, or SEC team.  The fact is, the rest of conferences record, helps or hurts OSU in the end.  Would you rather beat an undefeated scUM or a two loss scUM?  That said, Screw Blue, but I hope they win out until November 24, when they come to The Shoe, and Ohio State gets another top 10-15 win under their belt, and ruin a BCS bid for you know who.  That is all.

My hatred for Michigan is only trumped by the sanctimonious ass hats in South Bend. Each year I pull for the Wolverines just once. Sadly, this weekend is upon us. I hate Notre Dame far more than Michigan. This has nothing to do with conference pride either. Living in the Chicago land area, surrounded by plastic Paddies who think because their name starts with "Mc" or "O'" means they have some birthright as Notre Dame fans to be total jerkoffs has made my hatred for Notre Dame turn white hot each time I see their stupid red faced coach or racist mascot on the television. Their arrogance knows no limits and those that actually received a degree from ND are some of the worst human beings in existence. The ONLY thing I hate worse than ND alums are St. Mary's alums who say they went to ND, when in reality, all they were looking for was their "Mrs." degree. A plague on both their houses, but may the Wolverines totally and completely curb stomp the Notre Dame Slap Fighting Irish.

'Tis but thy name that is my Quarterback;
Thou art thyself, though not a Quarterback?.
What's Quarterback? it is nor bad pass, nor wobbly duck,
Nor arm, nor poorly read defense, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other position!
What's in a position? that which we call a glorified running back
By any other name would still be just as bad;
So Denard would, were he not Denard call'd,
Retain that dear mediocricty which he owes
Without that title. Denard, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.

It has been seven long years but I feel as though I can finally put my English degree from OSU to good use here....

I sort of already jammed the metaphor by making Hoke into Juliet and Denard into Romeo, so I really need to pick a lane here-I'll stick with the "Michigan is Montague" theme here. Since ND is the Capulet house, I think the obvious choice for the role of enforcer Tybalt played so well is everyone's favorite flyin' Hawaiin, Manti Te'o.

@AJBor41 - I think the lesser of two evils is the team that we stand to gain something from.  We lose a quality win and strength of schedule if ND beats scUM.  Of course, this is assuming they win out, we win out, and get to crush their Rose Bowl Dreams.  That would make for a perfect season this year, all things considered.

hail2victors9's picture
hail2victors9 on 20 Sep 2012 - 1:17pm #

Regardless of what happens, any casual fan that has been paying attention this season knows the rankings are more of a joke than usual this year.  Extreme 10-15 spot jumps up or down for beating, or losing as, a top 10 team.

They could rank Michigan top 5 and I will just laugh.  It's not a big 2 little ten, anymore.  This year it's the big 2 and the little 122.  Hopefully FSU, WVU or TBD is worthy of a title game.

@Chad

sorry to burst your bubble, but if we win out after Saturday and lose to OSU, we still go to the B1G Championship Game (no dream crushing possible).  You need Michigan to lose to MSU or Nebraska and them to have a better B1G record for your scheme to be fulfilled.

The Big Ten perception has already been destroyed this year, and TSUN beating ND will not change that. Bowl season will be the Big Ten's next chance to get a good perception. That said, a TSUN loss will quiet their fans from acting like they are so high and mighty. So I hope ND wins.

I think ND wins in a close, exciting game.  The past couple of years this matchup has gone down to the last possession.  I agree with GOBUCKSOSU, the damage is done in terms of national perception of the B1G, a UM win won't help that much.  The only way to change the national media's opinion is going to be bowl season.

tennbuckeye19's picture
tennbuckeye19 on 20 Sep 2012 - 2:02pm #

The perception of the Big Ten was destroyed prior to this year. This season thus far has just furthered the notion that it is a weak league that would not be able to compete against the other major conferences. I honestly don't see that perception changing.

hodge's picture
hodge on 20 Sep 2012 - 2:04pm #

@GOBUCKSOSU - A Michigan victory over ND will likely not make much of a difference to the B1G's overall perception; but a loss would be a nail in its coffin--for this season, at least.  The opinion of the B1G has been set, but a loss would plunge that opinion even further down (and, subsequently boost ND's perception way above where they should be).

@chadparker322 - In non-bowl ban years, I would agree with you, but, in my opinion, we have nothing to gain from either outcome of this particular pillow fight.  Sure, it could mildly help the national view of the B1G, but even a stomping of ND isn't going to have the media, fan bases, and general public thinking that the Big Ten is remotely strong this season.  To me, ND (this year) is the lesser of the two evils, but I'd be happiest if they beat the living crap out of each other in an awful game like BUCKEYEVET described

Notre Dame dominated for a good portion of the game last year, this time I think they'll close the deal and win by 14.

I couln't give a crap about the "perception of the Big 10" junk, it's already been exposed that the conference is absolutely terrible this season, and one win over a still unproven Notre Dame won't change anything. The Big 10 sucks. It sucks hard.

Bucksfan's picture

Honestly, Notre Dame is a pretty decent football team this year.  I don't exactly harbor the same kind of animosity towards them as I do certain other schools.  I like their style, too...with a strong rushing attack and a solid defense...it's not some sort of gimmick like what Kelly built in Cincinnati.  Are they overrated?  I don't think it's even fair to judge that based on the schedule they have to play.  They held in there against Purdue, who is my pick to represent the Leaders division in the B1G title game, and they straight up dominated Sparty.  If Notre Dame were in the B1G, they'd probably finish somewhere in the top-3.  With dates against Stanford, Oklahoma, Miami-FL, and USC, it's still a long road ahead.  But they're probably going to put up a pretty good fight in those games.

Plus, I like the golden chromer helmets.

Michigan gets me to pull for them 1 game a year...when they play an SEC team.  But this year that only lasted about a quarter against Alabama, and from them on all I did was observe just how overhyped their stupid program is, how stupid their fat-ass coach sounds, and how wrong we were to read into their 2011 season as indication for anything.  They're a disgusting excuse for a top-5 football program, and they still have a long way to go.

F-Michigan.  Go Irish.

My Perfect Scenario:

School up north barely beats Notre Dame in a low scoring game. Everett Golston & Denard both have bad games. Why? If Notre Dame loses, people will stop saying they're back. I'm getting tired of it already, the only school ESPN loves more than Bama. For recruiting purposes, it would help us for ND to lose. The more people go around saying they're back, the more we lose guys like Davonte Neal to them. Hopefully it'll get Anzalone back if they lose also
