Travis Howard

Sort of reminds me of the guy that cherry picks in basketball. He gets the picks , but isnt doin the dirty work. I believe Grant could start over him and be a larger contributor to actual tackles and turnovers. Not so much based on Doran's play saturday, but Howards overall.

Essentially, I agree. Grant is probably a better all around player. Howard is a very poor tackler and blows assignments more than any of the others currently starting in the secondary. We've only seen one game with Grant, but from what I saw he should start over Howard.

Great post and I couldn't agree more.  Howard has been in the right place at the right time with his picks.  D.Grant shut his man down and took the pick away from him...we'll see how Howard does this weekend.  Last years game vs Cousin's was embarrassing and if he's caught all alone like last year...don't be surprised if Grant gets in and rightfully so.  If you have the stomach for it watch this...and you'll see what I'm saying about Howard getting toasted...A LOT.

The way Howard ball-hawks around the secondary without actually covering makes me feel like he would be better suited as a safety. He makes great plays on the ball, but not so much on the man. I definitely agree that Grant could start at corner, especially seeing the way he played Saturday. The guy actually broke down and wrapped up legs when he tackled.

Travis gives everybody a 10 yard cushion! Why don't the coaches have him press more?

@Buckeye.33

Off coverage is the scheme the coaches are using this year, it's designed to get more turnovers. However, I agree, I think we should use more press coverage. I think Grant is better fit for press coverage though.

He's the guy constantly scoring , but stands under the rim at the other end.

Off coverage only works if the CBs quickly snuff out quick hitting pass plays and make solid, wrap that darn guy up, tackles.

Thanks for your time and hard work here at OSU Travis!

That being said, I'm ready for the next guy to play opposite side of Roby, that being Doran Grant.

This is why we have Burrows, Woodard, and Thompson coming in.  Hopefully we can Bell out of the south too.  I'd like to see the staff load up on DB's and skill players in the 2014 class too.

I'll trust the coaches opinion on who starts however i was impressed with grants play at corner. its nice to know we have a guy that can step right into starting spot next year especially if roby decides to leave early. Also seeing Grant do well at corner could help recruit Booker LB 2014 since they both went to St V

I actually agree with the person who said he should play safety. I kind of like that idea, and he could be decent back there.

My understanding is that the wide side corner plays off more than the short side corner. This is by design, but it seemed like there should have been an adjustment for the bubble screen. Grant looked great, and I would love to see him and Roby out there. I totally agree with the cherry picking analogy with Howard. It'd be nice to see some man coverage every once in a while. I think we have the athletes to make it work.

man 3 picks in 4games should be 4 except for offsides and he shouldnt start hes just leading the team in turnovers. he's doing exactly what the staff asks of him to play off get picks. i cant recall too many blown plays coverages or tackles  by him all i can remember is the terrible safety play this year. howard island is back lol

Howard's missed tackles made me wanna puke at the game on Saturday.  Especially after all the alleged focus last week on tackling.

Its true he has created turnovers.  However as the poster was stating would you rather have 3 picks and give up every 3rd and less than 5.  Personally, I would take less picks if it meant cutting our opponents 3rd down conversions in half.  This has bothered me for many years.  I understand not giving up the big play but on 3rd down if we played press man coverage it would at least make the qb have to actually make a read instead of the quick turn and pass that takes our d-line out of the play and always results in a first down.  especially on Howards side this year.

Can't see him playing safety for the simple reason that he can't or rather, he tackles very poorly. To play safety, he's going to need to be able to tackle in space and he can't do that.

We have called for it a lot, the man/press coverage from this year defense and secondary but we haven't seen it.

I remember (AND LOVE!) guys like Malcom Jenkins, Yobouty, Whitner...guys who would stick their man at the line and be able to shed him when blocking on a screen, bubble, or player getting to the edge and blow up the ball carrier behind the line.

Now I'm off topic, it isn't just Howard, its Roby, and I guess Grant too. Bryant can't shed a blocker to save his life.  I just miss the days when we had physical cornerbacks that loved to stuff the run and shed a block as much as they wanted to play in coverage.

I just wish the CB's would be more aggressive when breaking on pass plays.  If the philosophy is not to press, but they aren't going to play aggressive, what's the point?  They are going to give up the quick hitters, hitches, and the like for easy yards every time.

Like OregonianBuckeye said, it seems like OSU has the athletes to press more and create havoc on the outside.

A couple of those picks were gifts. Go back and rewatch each game and you'll see the rest of his poor play. He seems to be the one who gets beat the most, he doesn't tackle very well..he just isn't that good. You can't just go by a few int's and say hes a good corner.

Oh, and putting him at safety? lol that was a funny one..

Wow. I wasn't convinced Howard was that bad until watching that video. About 8 solid minutes of him getting destroyed in one game lol.

ETA: I thought he looked decent in Man coverage. He got ripped apart in Zone, couldn't react quickly enough, infrequently in the right place to make a play.
