I'm in the band and don't have the greatest view of every play, but whenever I see #8's jersey in there, we usually get a sack, TFL or hurry. Same story this week at MSU. I know when he comes in we usually blitz so its partially explained, but why do we not see more of him and Diesel? Makes sense to me to get them more snaps while keeping the starters fresh

We saw plenty of them the first 3-4 games. I think Vrabel liked sticken with Simon, Williams, Hankins, and Goebel mostly against Sparty.

Noah Spense should be in there more on passing situations with instructions to go get the QB.
Fickell still doesn't blitz Shazier like he should.
Spence is my favorite freshman player. Probably going to order a #8 jersey before the season is over. He's going to be a Jevon Kearse type player. He will terrorize B1G QBs for the next 4 years hopefully.
If he's as good as advertised he'll be gone in 3.

He had a free lane to the qb on one play I saw, did a nice job getting around his guy, unfournately for I believe it was Williams who got around in front of him and had the sack.
Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens
Vrabel stated he wanted his best 4 out there. I agree however Spence would be a great passing situation DE to rush the QB. Wouldn't hurt giving Simon or Williams a blow every now and then either.
Wouldn't mind seeing them slide Simon down to DT and put Spence in at DE on some passing downs. Would also like to see Washington get some more playing time.
I've been impressed with our athleticism and conditioning. Big Hank has been amazing so far. I didn't realize that under tressel we never had a nutritionist... that makes a huge impact on your conditioning. I can't wait to see a few more years of these DEs and DTs
Washington, Schutt, Spence, Bosa, Hill, and Lewis are going to make the nastiest D-Line in the country in a couple of years. I can't wait to see what these kids do. Hopefully we can add Hand to the mix in the 2014 class. Defense is all about disrupting the QB. The more we blitz and bring pressure the better our D looks.
He's actually been out there pretty often (as far as I can tell) the first 5 games on 3rd and longs--which is when he SHOULD be out there at this point, on obvious passing situations (so he can just attack the QB, as Buckster mentioned). They probably aren't really ready for him to handle run defense.
its cool to have one but technically the S&C coaches are very informed and educated regarding Nutrition..perhaps more informed regarding Sports nutrition and supplementation than just a regular nutritionist..so guys like Litcher and mariotti basically tell the guys what To eat, not to eat, and what to supplement with to enhance recovery and performance.

I think our coaches have said they want to rotate 6 not 10 guys. They want our best guys in there at all times. Spence and Washington are probably 2 of our top 5 most talented guys, but they may be prone to overpursuit and getting caught in bad positions b/c of their youth. When they are told "go get the qb" that makes it easy.
It's fun to know, without having to think, that our DL is going to be very good for the next few years. I mean you automatically have Spence/Washington/Schutt/Hale/Bennett/Steve Miller Band, Moore etc. and if Hankins stays...add in Bosa and Price along with Pittman....fun times ahead
You said the coaches will only play 6 guys yet you mentioned all the depth we will have in the near future..going to be a lot of unhappy campers it seems. One of our best and deepest D-lines was 2009..I believe we played 10 guys regularly.

Adding to what Buckeye06 wrote above, on MSU's opening drive for a FG, L. Bell caught three screen passes for 13 yds, 13yds, and 5 yds respectively. The Buckeyes, especially Nate Williams, did a much better job jamming and/or reacting to those screens after the first series. Bell ended up catching 8 for 58 yds for the game, so more than half his receiving yds came in that first series. On a couple of other plays, Maxwell saw that Bell was covered, panicked, and it resulted in a negative play.
The need to play discplined against those screens, though, probably took some edge off their speed rush and/or made the defensive coaches a bit hesitant to put in pure speed rushers like Spence and Washington.
I think the line is fine with anyone of the top 6 linemen. the problem is what is behind them. Coverage is still a bit soft or at the very least predictable. Their reaction time is off. If they can give that line 3 seconds, its over.
Sabino needs to be rushed a lot more. He is so good at rushing the passer and creating plays in the backfield. When he drops in coverage, I get very nervous.
I honestly have no idea what the coaches do since a lot of these guys may be happy they aren't getting a ton of snaps. It's a somewhat good problem to have, but you want the young guys to get some reps and be happy and hungry enough to go hard
