No more soft zone / full time prevent then decide to tighen up in the red-zone. We used to man-up and contest those short passes a lot more. Howard, Roby and Doran Grant are good enough to play man. If we can't do it against Miami and UCF we likely won't be doing it at all.

^ Agree. Opponents can pick up 5-8 yards all day. No pressure from Dline and soft coverage on corners.absolutley no blitz packages. Blitz with man coverage diff game
Completely agree BUCKS4REAL watch the SEC dbs play they rarely play off man which allows the line to get pressure i will never understand why almost every other team from every other conference ours esp play 10 yards or more your just giving away yards we have the dbs to do it
Also forgot to add that in college your allowed contact until the ball is in the air playing off man has never made sense to me it isnt the nfl 5 yd contact rule
Florida and LSU showed us first hand the values and consequences of this, yet we have yet to learn. Hopefully Urban hasn't forgotten this.
They change in strategy was to produce more interceptions. Tight lockdown man defense doesn't produce a lot of turnovers. Remember from All Access that the out route would be there all day, but our guys job was to make the tackle at the point of the catch. We've had more picks. Howard already has as many as last years db leader I believe. Throw in a lb blitzer occassionally and we got this. Have faith. There's so much "sky is falling" stuff around these parts.
Thanks for the reminder, Statutoryglory. The coverage subjectively looks worse to me (don't the DBs appear lost in space sometimes?), and yet they're stealing more passes.
I clicked on it... I regretted it immediately...
The change in philosophy seemed ok, but why the hell is Roby 12 yards off his man on 3rd and 7?
I agree with you Statutoryglory that yes the results thus far have been more picks and howard has been our best db as he is playing more consistently this year. My point was that as Redstorm45 said why are we playing 10-12 yards off every down especially if teams are still hitting passes downfield behind them. Why not bring them closer to disrupt the route or redirect even if its only enough to just hit the qb to get him thinking a little more maybe bring his confidence to stand in the pocket down. Im not saying in your face man like a yard off but close the gap. We were even playing 10 yards off when it was 3rd and less than 3 i just ask whats the point might as well give them the first everytime without making it too difficult. I also did watch the all access and the db portion about out routes but even yesterday there were numerous times when after a wr caught an out or another short route our db's were still 2-3 yards away from making the tackle cutting the starting distance helps them be on those guys quicker. I also agree that blitzing a lb would help obviously it couldnt hurt if they are hitting passes downfield anyway. Again i point to the SEC defensive schemes that ask the db's to play closer to the LOS and you tell me they dont cause turnovers. I dont know if your watching those games closer bc they cause a bunch of turnovers every week bc qb's are forced to make quicker decisions to throw into tighter spaces which is why most teams never go ham on them in the passing game bc of different looks like soft one side tight man on the other timing is never consistent. Again all im saying is we need more aggression on D this passive stuff will not cut it with Urban and how his gators D use to play. Sorry for the long post and im not a "the sky is falling type guy" im just suggesting a small change in scheme would do wonders at this point for our D as a whole esp the D-line.
JohnBlair - exactly! Urbz needs to change the D if needed.
It may happen...

I agree with both sides, honestly. I've wondered for years why we didn't play more Man Coverage. And like Spoonerbuck33 I've watched in absolute frustration through the Tressel (and Fickel) years as our CB's played 10 yards off and got eaten up time and time again by quick slants and WR screens.
At the same time, like StatutoryGlory, I'm going to trust Meyer in this case for a couple of reasons. 1) His 2-deep zone has been proven to work when he has the right talent for it in Florida, and 2) We absolutely have been ball-hawks thus far this season. I was just mentioning that yesterday to my nephew--even though we've only played Miami (OH) and UCF thus far, I think I've seen more INT in the last two games than I saw in an entire season under Tressel or Fickel.
I'd also say that if we can get a pass rush, that zone will be even more effective. The downs I saw Noah Spence in there (typically 3rd and long) we looked like a completely different team. It's easy to pick zone apart when you have time to sit back in the pocket and look around, but when you've got that big boy sniffing at you and you've got ants in your pants? An athlete like Roby or Howard will make a play on any duck you throw in a second.
LLJJGG thats overall a great post too i just remember of all games the purdue games of years past where all they did play after play is short routes and we would continue to play 10 yards off i hated watching those games. I also believe that a pass rush makes cover 2 exponentially difficult to march down the field on and i have noticed a better rush when spence and adolphus have been in the game. The thing they have spence doing second week into the season is dropping him in coverage. I have problems with that mainly bc hes a guy i would never have him do anything but pin his ears back and unleash him. Watch LSU they never have montgomery or mingo drop into coverage all year let alone one game they only have one job and that is to get after it. I do realize this is also bc of injuries at the moment that hes dropping back but its also a scheme that was over utilized under tressel and fickell picked it up. Again watch SEC defenses and tell me how many times any DE drops into coverage i dont understand why your two best options in simon and spence are taken out of rushing the passer at anytime. Which is why i believe their advantage is playing mixed coverages that are closer to the LOS that allows their lines to dominate. I just hope Luke can figure this out bc at this rate it can work bc the BIG is so bad but against top OOC competition it will not and Urban knows this. It may also just being vanilla schemes at this point but if its not then fickell ,who played under aggressive man coverage defenses under pagac, has not remembered how it works and i hope urban helps him. That spat with vrabs on the sideline was saying as much and as much as i hate to say it i believe predominantly zone schemes will not get it done anymore in this era of college football and the SEC is the only one to figure this out. Lastly, while as a former db i love high INT rates but i would take consistent 1 possession 3 and outs over INT's anyday of the week.
Freaking hate zone, and Fickell plays more than Heacock. And our CBs and Ss still can't figure out deep third coverage on the sideline. Fickell better figure it out. On their last TD, we had 2 guys covering 3, including a true Fr DE. Fickell got out coached today, boys. And his buddy Vrabel better figure out how to get some pressure on the QB.
