Freshman Defensive Lineman

Maybe I'm looking at this through scarlet colored glasses, but did anyone notice any drop off in production or pressure when Adolphus Washington, Noah Spence and Tommy Schutt came in during the second half?  I sure didn't.  It looked to me like all of the freshman DE/DT should see significant playing time all season; maybe even start later in the season.  What does everyone else think?

I thought our defensive intensity was absent in the first half and our pass rush was a non-factor till mid second half. I was hoping to see a bit more pressure on the QB which until second half I didn't see much of. I thought Spence,Washington,Schutt looked pretty solid and will get lots of playing time this year. Spence was especially noticed.

^^ agreed, but what sucked was how dysert was getting rid of the ball so quick. I knew he was a solid QB, but damn, he turned out to be pretty damn good IMO

I wouldnt worry too much about our D-Line, Miami had an awesome strategy of moving the pocket and getting rid of the ball quickly.  The problem on saturday was that Miami actually had the QB to execute their plan reasonably well.  So, sure they protected their QB and sure they moved the ball a little bit, but how many rushing yards did they have?  It's not like they moved the ball up and down the field all game.

Any team with a good game plan and a QB to pull it off is going to give us fits until we make the adjustments.  I wish Zac Dysert the best of luck (now that the game's over).  I think he'd do okay in the NFL given the chance.

-1 rushing yards! That is all I need to know about the Dline! Sacks will come and really there could have been a good 6-7 if it wasn't for Dysert playing so well. I could have sworn I saw Simon get his hands on Dysert at least 3 times before Dysert was able to get rid of the ball. Only guy I didn't see as much as I expected was Big Jon Hankins. He played his role well and did what he is supposed to do but I expected a bit more.

Spence and Washington are going to be awesome! Washington was in on plays more than any other dlinemen outside of Simon. Seemed like all afternoon I see Simon and Washington in on the tackle. Spence just need to get more reps. Plain and simple. I like Goebel and I am not sure why JT Moore was on the field so much early on. Looked like he was doing the best he can but is it enough to justify keeping Spence off the field? I don't think so.

Starting line should be Bennett, Simon, Hankins and Spence. I think at the end of the season for the UM game, it will be Simon, Washington, Hankins and Spence. They are just that good!

Some major sporting publications I've seen have Dysert in the top 5 for qbs in next years draft, so he has a chance to be drafted high if he keeps producing big numbers.

Yes he was better than advertised, I was very impressed. Credit to Miami here I think they game planned very well in terms of their block assignments. But it was also tough because most of the time Dysert was able to just get a pass off just before getting hit which was also pretty impressive to watch, given the circumstances I thought he played very well. I am interested in watching Miami this season I think they could be pretty good in the MAC. In terms of Dysert being an NFL prospect the announcers mentioned a stat in pre-game that summed up how highly the NFL thinks of his prospects: by the date of the game 28-32 NFl teams had come to Oxford to watch practice and check him out

@ RKyle, There was not a drop off of in production or pressure with fresmen in the second half because Miami doesn't have the depth on the OL to match ours on the DL.

@ Squirrel, In regards to starters on the DL, what about Nate Williams?

I like Williams at SDE, Simon at DT, Hankins at DT, and Spence at WDE by the end of the year. That package can bring the heat.

Any freshman starting in The Game is going to have to be a much better player than the experienced vet he replaces. I doubt even Spence starts The Game, but he may get more minutes. It's one of those good problems for a coach to have.

You guys are crazy if you think that Vrabel/Meyer are ever benching Goebel.  Theyve said repeatedly that he's as valuable as any player on D because of all the dirty work he does up front as NT.

I also don't see Williams ever playing SDE.  He used to be our WDE with Simon as SDE before he got hurt. I saw him line up a bunch on Saturday in that Viper linebacker position.  I think that's a good fit for him.  OR, he can go back to WDE and Simon can go back to SDE.

All depends on how healthy Bennett is this season and Williams, too, obviously.  I agree Moore is a bit of a downgrade right now.  Maybe try Simon at SDE and start Spence at WDE?

Let's start all freshman, why not. Apparently Goebel, Simon, Bennett etc are no good. People they have a 3-4 years ahead of them!! Let them earn their keep!

I think we'll see different scenario in the upcoming games. Possibly not with UCF because they'll be so run heavy, but teams without the coaching and skill at QB are coming on the schedule, and the DL with eat.
