Easy yards on Ohio St. D

I'm a huge Buckeye fan, but not a homer or an apologist...for those of you who are, please tell me anytime in your lifetime that you've seen the Buckeye D give up so many easy yards. Everything is open to the offense we play 10 yards off and all the quick pass routes are there, running lanes are open all over. It doesn't matter if we have them backed up in their own end or we get helped by big 15 yard chop-block penalties we cannot get them off the field....and it's bad at the begging of games as well so it's not because they are tired from being out there too much when our offense isn't moving the ball.

This D with more talent and experience than last year, is considerably worse so far. It has to be in part to the changes on the defensive coaching staff. The worst part is, we are not playing good teams, not even average teams yet we are giving up more yards and big plays to these much less talented teams than we would normally give up to top 10 teams over the years. Things are way out of whack on the defensive side, and yes the offense is having trouble too, but the D has generally always carried us. Scary!

Same bad players from last year with a new coaching staff this year!

Maybe someone could help me out. I've been watchin' tOSU all of my life. At what time in the last 40 years was our pass defense great. Everyone seems shocked by it this year, but it seems normal to me.

It was pretty good when S.Springs was there. He'd basically take the opposing teams best WR out of the game. Leaving the rest of the defense to focus on the rest of the team.

Check out tOSU vs Scum in 1996. Pass defense was awesome. We won the Rose Bowl but I'm pretty sure Scum won it through the air

We used to go man on man on the outside all the time in the last 15 years and had as many shut down corners as anyone... We'd shut down top big 10 teams routinely and play great D in the secondary for most of the time between 1993-2010, yes we played too much prevent once we got leads but we could tighten up the D and passing D when we went man.

Somebody bring some stats. I know in 2003 we were #1 against the rush but way down the list in passing. I can't remember any year where a team couldn't throw on the buckeyes.

'07 were #1 in pass defense.

The 2007 defense was stingy! The only game they looked mortal were against LSU and Illinois.

I was setting in the Superdome for the BCS. Matt Flynn picked them apart on short routes and threw for 4 TDs.

It's one thing to get picked apart by the national champs...we are getting picked apart by Miami, Oh, UAB and Central Florida

Matt Flynn, the same guy who throw for 400 in a game last year in the nfl? Come on dude.

My point is it's nothing new. Ohio State as a whole has always played soft on the corners and given up passing yards. Nothing to see here...lets move along.

That team had Matt Flynn, Dwayne Bowe, Jacob Hester...all guys who started at one point in the NFL. Not even mentioning how stacked that defense was.

Yeah, Matt Flynn! Who finally started as a fifth year senior. Yeah Matt Flynn who couldn't beat out the rookie Wilson. You act like he's somekind of QB legend. Come on, dude.

Not to sound like a blind optimist, but if an offense is needing 46 passes to compile 260 yards through the air (which was the case today), then generally speaking, the opposing defense is doing its job.

This philosophy of allowing short completions between the 20 yard lines isn't so different from games like NC State in 2003, where Philip Rivers completed 36 passes for just 315 yards. As mentioned above, it's the sort of thing we've seen here before.

15 points, all on Special Teams. Without the blocked punt, they got 9 points total (3 field goals). I don't get the panic personally. If we were getting anything at all from our Offense outside of the 2nd and 4th quarters, I doubt they would have gotten even half as many yards.

He was good enough to be the biggest free agent QB in the off season not named Peyton Manning. He won a national title, was drafted..and proved he could be a good nfl QB. Soo what I'd he had a good game against us. Chris leak did as well.

Every QB that can throw a spiral can pass for yards against us. Thats the point! It's been going on for years. It's like the sun coming up in the morning. It just happens. Everyone is crying about our pass defense, which I say has always been suspect. Nothing new.

I think UCF and Cal can be considered average teams... Maybe the non conference schedule was not the toughest, but there was some competition.

^ exactly what that guy said..everyone is sounding kind of ridiculous with the" this is osu and we should have beat down every team weve played so far"..i completely agree we should have blown out a very bad uab team..we beat the shit out of miami..ucf and cal are both somewhere between average to good teams who put up a fight..this is osu and the goal is to win the national championship..but this is also a team that had a losing record last year..4-0 sounds pretty good.

Well i like college and i like football...and im gunna keep doin em both cause they make me feel good!!!

No adjustments...it's simple.  I know everyone LOVES Fickel...but it's GLARINGLY obvious Meyer put too much faith in the patsy/fall guy.  He's not as good as D'Antonio or Heacock...and may never be.  If he can't make simple adjustments (like help on LB coverage on Slot Wrs or telling players to yell "SCREEN" when you see it developing...sorry folks...but these are simple things that aren't being done).  I see Withers taking over or let the year ride out and a change will be coming if this doesn't get cleaned up...and fast.  Bell is just chomping at the bit to run on this defense and they better learn to tackle and WRAP...not submarine (yet another simple fundamental football rule...that's not being executed...for some reason...which=coaching).   Let the defensiveness begin below.....

"There's nothing that cleanses your soul like getting the hell kicked out of you."
"I love football. I think it is most wonderful game in world and I despise to lose."
