Defensive Signals

Anyone else notice at times the defense or individuals therein, seem to not have a clue as to what the defensive call is? Have witnessed different individuals, not one person or position in particular, throw up their hands wondering what the call is right up to the snap. Even to the point that it appears they never got the play call and simply put their hand on the ground and did what they thought was right. I may be wrong but it happens frequently and it could be a big part of our issues on D.

I've witnessed it every week. The DEF staff has three guys on the sideline signalling in plays (presumably two of them are disguised signals). Most often it is the DEF secondary looking at the sidelines and each other with palms raised as if to say, "What is my assignment?!"

It's ridiculous. You are playing DEF. Line up, be aggressive in your scheme most of the time, and have someone (typically a middle linebacker) call out adjustments at the line of scrimmage when necessary.

I am no coach, but I think this staff has been tentative, passive, and indecisive and thus the players are often caught over thinking, rather than utilizing their football instincts and training, and are fighting to catch up rather than be in attack mode. I think this has resulted in the breakown in fundamentals many of us have been lamenting for weeks.

Further, we have no leader on the field in the vein of a James Laurinitis who has the experience, ability, and intelligence to make the reads and lead the defensive unit properly.

That's my $0.02 for what it's worth.

Personally watch the line play a great deal and Hankins does it often as well as others at times. At the last second they will be switching positions from right to left side with barely enough time to get their hand on the ground as the ball is snapped. Cannot be conducive to proper execution and don't really see many other good teams with the same problem. Needs addressed IMO.

Someone is going to have to correct me here, as I believe I may be wrong however...

There is a base defense called and then each position coach may be responsible for specific adjustments for their units. ie Coombs (maybe Withers, although he's in the booth right?)is making adjustments/calls for the secondary while Vrabel might be calling shots for the dline/backers and Fickell/Withers with the overall call.

I see it quite a bit with our secondary, and have seen it in the past too. However, it does seem prevalent this season especially with our DBs. Could this be because our guys (minus Doran) were used to Coach Johnson and Haynes and maybe there is something lost in translation with Coombs/Withers?

I don't know..just a thought....

someone set me straight
