Defensive Effort vs. MSU

Saw much improvement today minus the one brain fart on the MSU touchdown. Play the same way at Nebraska and we will be good. Hope Braxton is OK. Opinions?

a win is a win is a win. I'll take it. I must admit i cringed and yelled out "ACL" when Braxton when down. I then breathed a huge sigh of relief when I saw he was okay.

ALso Kenny G is impressing the hell out of me. He seems like he is just as comfortable behind center as is Braxton.

Lol Jester i did the same thing its never good when the player drops the ball before they hit the ground bc of the pain. Might have to start calling Braxton Gumby bc that did not look good. As for the defense i was on edge but they outperformed my expectations and did a hell of a job on Bell. Also, bringing the DB's closer to the LOS helped against the run and condense the field and windows to throw. Overall i am just really happy to be 5-0 it wasnt pretty but i will take it considering no truly serious injuries and the defense improved while the O was consistent in not going three and out  awhole lot against the best D we might face this year so def encouraged for the rest of the season. Lastly, i cant wait to see the shoe rocking next week for a night game esp with the recruits we have coming in. Go Bucks!

per 11W Twitter: "Ohio State did not allow MSU to gain a single first down rushing. OSU finished with 14."

I think we saw the improvement today on both sides of the ball that Meyer was wanting. I think the only issue on offense today was the turnovers. Those three turnovers were in MSU territory. No turnovers, larger margin of victory.

@ Jester: that's big! Our run defense was stout today. More like the Ohio State run defense I'm used to.

And I agree with SWB, we looked much improved, could have been an even larger victory. Let's not forget we were in enemy territory as well.

Huge game by the defense today as a whole. They held the 3rd best rusher in the nation to less than 50 yards. That's a major confidence builder and foreshadow to the rest of the season.

Quit worrying about the D.  I knew Bell wasn't going to get shit vs our D.  We've been having problems with stetch plays, and out in the open.  Between the tackles we're fine.  The only O left in the Big10 that'll give us problems would be Michigan/Neb since they both have mobile QBs.  We got the power running game down.  No problem.  I knew Bell wasn't going to do anything today.  Too bad we had all 3 of those TO's when we were driving otherwise we would have won by 2+ Tds.

Next year we're going to have Roby, Grant, Burrows, and Woodard in the secondary. Outside of Shazier who'll be back, perhaps some faster LBs. Maybe Hankins back (though unlikely). That's an exciting thought.

I agree with Kareem.  I think the D looked decent, but it was against MSU, who our D is currently built for.  The secondary still made a bonehead play (5 guys all try to strip but no one tackles), Roby and Howard both had a penalty or a bad play here and there, but they also had a lot of good plays.  LBs struggled against their TE when he would just run behind them and wait for the pass.  Hankins and Williams played a great game from what I could tell.

Overall, it's about what I expected, and I cannot say that we improved on D.  Can't wait until Thursday when Ross tells us what really happened :)

Pretty good defensive performance, though if you can shut down Bell to any degree, you're going to shut down Sparty. (Not to do the call-out thing, but the people who posted ridiculous projections for how many yards Bell would get against us were maybe overreacting a little to UAB?)

OSU shut down Bell, aside from the one TD we gave up I thought we tackled much better today. Didn't see much of storm making plays at MLB though

I have a confession to make I had a #99 Fickell jersey made last year. 1. Because of all the heat Fickell was taking as HC. And 2. Because the 95 & 96 edition of the Silver Bullets are my favorite Ohio State defensive unit to date.

So last week's calls on 11W to fire Fickell were steaming me up pretty good. Today, like last week, I wore my Fickell jersey at the gamewatch here in Raleigh. About mid-way thru the third quarter, a drunk-ass fellow Buckeye tracked me down in the men's room so he could tell me that Fickell was going to get fired after the season is over. I was dumbfounded. This defense played miles better today than UCF, Cal, or UAB.

I'd like to believe that Meyer is a better evaluator of talent and coaches than some idiot who's probably never played a down of football. But if Meyer and Fickell were to part ways, mark my words. Fickell will be snapped up by a top-25 team within a matter of days.

@NC_Buckeye: I think it was Musburger who said it today, UM has kept all of the former DC's for the first year at each of the schools he coached. I wouldn't be surprised if it was mostly out of courtesy and Fickel "opts out" next year to go somewhere else.

"Cruise" and "Tomahawk" sounds good to me. I predicted Klein would get the start and I thought he hung tough as well. Not ready to dub "ICBM" but who knows. I saw some linebackers on the field today. Aggressive, hitting, flying to the football. I want to see more, but tonight, I'm happy.

Now what can they do to stiffen up the secondary??

SPreston2001's picture

Run defense was SOLID!! Secondary??? Now thats a different story. We were def helped out by MSU with the dropped balls and missed/overthrown passes. D still needs help but this is the type of close win ill take and keep it moving. I just hope Brax is ok and by gosh one of our RB's need to step up and help him out in the running game!! Cant keep risking Braxtons health...

To be fair, some of those missed/overthrown passes were the direct result of defensive pressure.  We won today because we won the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.  That by itself makes me very very happy.

By scheme or personnel we give a good deal of room off the line for the underneath passing game, I'm guessing we just don't have the DBs so we give up yards. Most interesting to me was that MSU got Bell the ball in a variety of ways early, but seemed to concede before the kickoff that they couldn't run straight at us for 3.5+ ypc. Except for that hideous missed tackle exhibition TD we seem to give up once a week, Much improved D overall!

I think the Defense will play even better Vs Shot put thrower Martinez.  Burkhead will not be nearly as tough  to tackle as Bell.  That's all they have...NEB is in trouble if you ask me.  Revenge time....

Of the good teams left on the schedule, Martinez is the best QB, and they have a run game and defense.  That means that we can't sell out versus their run, or their pass game will put up the points.  The only other team that has both is Wisconsin, and that is IF their freshman QB turns into a stud by the time we face him.  I'm not suggesting that we'll go undefeated, but I think Nebraska is the biggest threat.

Bolt's picture
Bolt on 30 Sep 2012 - 3:22pm #

Nebraska is a totally different animal and I think will give our defense far more trouble. They're going to have a lot more speed running out on the edge with Burkhead and Martinez and that's what we've had trouble with (poor angles and tackling in space). I expected us to stuff Bell because they were going to try to either run straight at us (dumb) or (dumber) beat us with Andrew Maxwell (and they nearly did with the latter). Option plays and runs to the outside and good play fakes for deep receivers is what I forecast against the Huskers and that really worries me given our knack for playing pretty undisciplined on defense. Offensively we should be able to do work pretty damn well against these guys as well though.

Ya I felt like the win was just a team win in every facet. All 3 areas of the team had some really great plays and some bonehead plays and in the end all worked together to get the win, and I love seeing that!
