Why was Keenan Allen not covered underneath at all in the 4th quarter on 3rd and 3 in our red zone, Cal down 6? Everyone paying attention knew Allen was going the be the primary target of the play. He was in the slot and given a four yard cushion uncontested. Looked like a bad defensive play call issue to me, no? Has this been discussed?

Our defense hasn't looked like the typical OSU D at all this season. they play off the ball and tend to work on preventing the big play rather than making a big defensive play. No idea why they are doing this. I have been a tad disappointed by the team overall this year so far. It is me personally. I am happy as heck that we are 3-0 but I hope the team actually starts tackling someone.

@luckydawg: preventing the big play is classic OSU defense. It has always been about not giving up a quick hitter and keep working the offense and make them hurt themselves. In general against Cal we didn't play that way and gave up a number of big plays (sure poor execution hurt in some cases), but we did get much more pressure on the QB.
I think the main reason the last two years have been subpar on defense is because of the linebackers. Without solid LB play, especially at the Mike position, it is hard to be consistently good. Hopefully by next year Grant will have the defense figured out, because he appears to have the physical tools, but not the mental tools or instincts.
Glad to see all that supposed attention to 'not giving up the big play' has paid off for the defense
So are you saying you think the DC's were purposely willing to give up the first down in order not to give up a TD on that play? I find it hard to believe, and think it was actually a lack of awareness or understanding from the DC's as to what the D they were using would mean there. Unless Grant or Sabino played it wrong. I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell.
Either way, that's the kind of mistake that loses games. Really hope it doesn't continue!
