Braxton's touches

I know in the beginning of the season we were all worried about braxton's touches running the ball with his high # of carries. Now I know he is having trouble making reads still which causes this a little bit, I feel like his touches have been to little lately. I really think he should run the ball at least 15 times a game. I feel it really puts pressure on the defense and opens up the other backs and the passing game better. Especially the play action passing game down field. What is everybody else's thoughts?

Meyer purposely restricted Braxton during the UAB game.  The reason was 2-fold.  First it was to preserve his body as much as possible for big 10 play.  Second he allowed Braxton to check plays at the line and wanted to work on his game management and passing skills.  We'll see if that helps down the road in say, Madison, where Braxton will need to make a pre snap read, change the play at the line, and score that game winning TD.

I agree I think 15-18 rushes is a good amount for Brax and I think you're right in thinking the play action is helped because he looked better passing against MU and UCF I thought anyways

Braxton looks eerily similar to Troy Smith early on in his Buckeye career, doesn't he? It seemed like halfway through Smith's JR year it clicked and he realized his legs could buy him time to throw, but before that he was mostly a runner.

Braxton seems kind of the same way right now in the sense that the game is still fast and he struggles making the right read all of the time so he uses his athleticism and legs to make plays. Once it slows down for him I feel like he will develop into a better thrower. But I agree, he needs ro run the ball 10-15 times a game to keep defenses honest. I'm still a little surprised we haven't seen more of the "Tebowish" fake QB draw and pass plays that seemed to work so well for Urbz at Florida.

Braxton is a FAR superior runner to Troy Smith.  It would be a shame for the Bucks not to utilize this unique talent.  He seriously has the best 1 on 1 ability in the nation.  When he learns to progress through a couple reads after a play action, watch out.  Might put those Troy Smith numbers in his rear view mirror.

I'd like to see a little more read option in B1G play. From what I've seen, Braxton makes up his mind pre-snap on whether he will keep it or give it to the back. He needs to start reading the DE more and making more calculated choices rather than deciding before the snap.

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

I think he should run enough to be effective and keep the defense guessing..but he needs to continue to develop as a passer so he can keep defenses honest. The only way he'll get better at throwing is doing it more..not running 25 times a game. Eventually that will just become a habit and he will continue to want to take off early instead of looking at his targets downfield.

If Braxton can start to hit the deep throw this offense will be extremely dangerous. We had 2 TD's against UAB that Braxton overthrew. His running ability makes the safeties think twice and then get burnt deep.

I agree with cash22 about Troy, he got great at buying time and it just  seemed like one day it clicked. I also agree with zach that Braxton is a far superior runner. If it all clicks one day with this offense, we will witness greatness. He has only scratched the surface of his potential.

Earl Bruce says run him as many times as you have to to win...as many times as it takes...I agree with Earl

@OSUJAKE Agree!  I think OSU can win on a game plan based entirely on zone reads and chucking it deep.  IF Braxton can start hitting those deep throws.  Seems like he's most comfortable and throws the best spiral when he's letting it rip deep down the sideline.  Just put a liiiiiiiittle more air under it.  Devin Smith will beast mode everyone for those jump balls.

@Zach..I am not disagreeing with you about Braxton being a much better runner than Troy...To me it seemed like Troy figured out how to move laterally to buy time to throw instead of just deciding to pull it down to run....With that being said I feel like Urbz is going to want a lot more designed runs being called than Tress ever did with Troy

With all of this talka bout Braxton...still hard to believe he's only 4 games into his SOPHOMORE year....

I think more than Braxton being an effective runner, we need our running backs to really start to dominate and string together some big plays. Although it moves the ball (sometimes) and is effective, teams don't lose sleep over running backs and plays that go for 3-4 yards.

They will lose sleep over RBs that can break off 15+ yard runs. This is why Jordan Hall is so pivotal to our offense. I know the QB is the most important player in a Meyer offense, and Braxton has a long way to go to become the player we know he can be. However, I think a better running game from our backs is ultimately going to open up more holes for Braxton to run and also make the passing game easier for him.

I guess bottom line, we need the facet of our offense that doesn't involve Braxton to really step up and be the strength we thought it could be before the season. If this happens, it is going to make it a lot harder for defenses to key on Braxton's running and force him to throw. It will also make teams respect our ability to run from not just the QB but also from the RB position. This is going to give our (maligned) WRs lighter coverage and the ability to gain separation and find space ultimately making it easier for Braxton to make the read and deliver a ball that the receiver can go get.

So, RBs (Hall) step up, I do agree we need to keep feeding Braxton (10-12) running touches, and hopefully those two rolling will open up the passing game for Braxton. He's gotten better but 91st in the nation is not heisman, or even tOSU acceptable.

I agree about back production, but I think this goes back to braxton's read's as well. I think like it has been said before he is making his read wheteher to hand off or run before the ball is nsapped and it is inhibiting the constraint put on the defense. The backs I think will se more production once braxton starts making better reads of when to hand it off and when to tuck it. Until then though I see it being about the same. As far as his passing goes I really hope he gets this footwork problem down. Everytime he makes an errant throw if you rewatch it you will usually notice his feet are  not  set in the correct position. That or he doesn't use his hips to follow threw with his motion. Either way Going into B10 play we are going to need to see better reads out of him to keep the defenses off of him.

Agree completely.  I'm more concerned this year to see him progress as a QB than win games with his feet (as spectacular as that is to watch).

I clicked on it... I regretted it immediately...

It is definitely a hard balance because he is such a playmaker with his feet, and at times it seems like the offense sputters when he isn't rushing the ball enough.

This could be Braxton's Heisman game right here. I hope they let him control this game.  They took the ball out of his hands last week which was a good move imo he should be fresh this week.  Receviers need to come up big this week too many drops as of late.
