He seems like a nice fellow, but do we not have anyone who can kick the ball into the endzone? They moved kickoffs up to the 35 yard line, and somehow he still can't get the ball inside the 10 yard line? Eventually we're going to play against a team who actually has a decent kickoff return and get burnt.

When the kickoff coverage does its job, the opponent will start inside their 20. I know what you mean, but its not that big of a deal.
i believe he actually can kick it farther but it's part of ufm's strategy to pin them inside the twenty. seems like high risk low reward to me.

It does seem he's intentionally angling his kicks (i.e. when he kicks to the left the coverage is likewise bunched to the left). I agree though, high risk low reward. They've returned it past the 30 twice already this game, I'd rather just give them the 25 everytime, you're much less likely to get the odd TD return.
lol exactly, 35 yard line again. It's pointless.
Since he has to tackle today too, I don't mind those kicks.
He's looking like our best player on kickoff coverage, and I think Meyer wants him to make them return it. I'm happy with him for the most part, but I still cringe on chip shot field goals
"he seems like a nice fellow" haha
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
I don't believe he is consistently capable of kicking he ball into (let alone out of the back of) the end zone.
He can kick the ball out of the endzone for sure, but I think the plan is to angle the ball to about the goal line and have the coverage team pin them deep.
Good thing the linebackers played well today or I might nominate Basil to start at middle linebacker next week. Haha
If theres a returner that is a threat he'll kick it out of the endzone. Urban prides himself on Special Teams so he'll kick it short on purpose to pin them back inside the 20
He has and can kick it out of the endzone. It's strategery.
Hopefully this works, I don't really know how to embed youtube videoes. Basil can absolutely kick the ball out of the end zone. He did it last year against Toledo, and this was back when they kicked off from the 30 and not the 35. As others have mentioned, it's by design that he's not booming them through the end zone this season.
It's strategy by Urban. Try to kick it as close to the goal line as possible to force the other team to make a return that is hopefully short of the 25.
never use Basil, tend to stick to the other spices when making food.
I think Basil has the leg, Urban said he'll only kick it deep through the endzone if there is a dangerous return man. And we haven't faced one yet.
As long as it doesn't burn us, I'm all for strategy! Maybe I'm just too used to seeing people take it 95-100 yards against us during the Fickel/Tressel era. It seemed like every kickoff today was being taken back to the 30-35 yard line, so it didn't look like the strategy was working too effectively.
I wonder if Urbz also wants to watch the frosh run down and try to make tackles. I'm not saying that he'd give up a lot of return yardage just so that he could evaluate, and work with, certain kids he thinks/hopes will be special (and when their bowl eligible), but - hypothetically - if it only cost them a couple of extra yards here and there it might be worth it to Urbz. Also, he wants to develop a killer attitude and kick return defense is a good opportunity to cultivate that.
At least dude can tackle. Seems like he has accounted for 25% of the tackles on kick offs this year. (Slight exageration)
^nice, Dan Stultz does'nt have shit on Basil.
Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.
Meyer actually specifically praised Basil, saying that he puts the kick offs exactly where he wants them. When he wants it out the back of the endzone, Basil does it, when it wants it dropped on the goalline to make them return it, he does it. Basil definitely has the leg to put it out every time.
He was in on a tackle on one of the kickoffs today. Nice.
Correction, he was credited with 2 tackles today. He must want to pad his tackle stats.
vacuuming sucks
It's a great strategy, as long as we can consistently tackle...
Strategy we use against teams w crappy return men. He wouldn't be doing this against Brandon tate or Devin hester.
Hope he doesn't use this strategy on the opening kickoff in next year's BCS NC Game.
Ya I think he's just aiming for the 1-5 yd line so we can try to pin them down there. The bad thing is that our coverage is pretty bad most of the time and they run it back to the ~30 it seems.
