or is it too early to pull the trigger on weeden in 1 yr? if the browns are sitting at the #1 pick w/ a new owner and prob new regime no way they pass on barkley in my opinion.

way too early to have this type of conversation.
I'm still a supporter of Weeden, but if they're sitting there at number 1 you take Matt Barkeley. If they aren't, they need a WR badly, and Robert Woods would be a great pick. It's a shame that Marqise Lee still has to play one more year.
these talks make me want to vomit. Even though i wanted to rip my face off watching the game on Sunday, i am nowhere near ready to have this kind of talk. Let it play out a couple of games. I will say our defense played out of their minds this week
"Winter is coming" - Urban Meyer
Woah guys. Go to the other thread and look, I was defending Weeden all day. I'm just saying that if they end up with the number 1 pick, it will be awful damn hard to say no to Matt Barkeley. I will say this, I was worried about linebacker depth coming into the season, but damn that defense looked really good, like best in the AFC North good.
Yes and yes.
I would have cut him the second I saw him get stuck under the American flag before kickoff. Thanks for your time Brandon, but please enjoy your newly acquired free time.
a 5 rating doesn't help either.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
Weeden is a bum, he doesn't have time to develop he is already 28. He will be out the door with Heckert and Holmgren at the end of the year. If Shurmur is lucky, he'll survive
"They don't know what they don't know." - Coach Mick
Yep a guy that has done no wrong is a bum. Man, as a Browns fan, I hate other Browns fans, they're so f*cking impatient and stupid.
If they are picking #1 there is no doubt they should take Barkley. That would mean that Weeden hadn't shown any improvement all season and Barkley is going to be a stud.
vacuuming sucks
Statistically the worst day in the NFL is more than 'no wrong'. Now its one game, I get that, but in this NFL, rookies aren't given the same learning curve they have in years past. If you are the best QB on the roster (which he is based on his opening day start) you absolutely need to do more than 12\35. An INT or two isn't all on Weeden yesterday but a lot of misses are. One week isn't enough to write the guy off but his play was absolutely abysmal.

I didn't completely hate the Trent Richardson pick, because Cleveland needed a running back, but to take a guy that high knowing how the NFL game is played today, to me wasn't the smartest deal in the world. Then taking Weeden where they did, and moving up to do it? I just get the feeling that since the Browns have come back into the league in 99, its just been freakin' amateur hour and it almost doesn't even feel like they are an actual NFL team. As a fan, its just frustrating as hell. I am waiting for SOMETHING positive to happen, and who knows, maybe with a new owner, something good will happen. I'm cautiously optimistic cause I've been fooled too many times before.
I don't know if it would've been possible to pull off or even how much they would've had to give up for it, but I would've done just about anything to get RGIII if I was in the Browns front office.
I'm giving Weeden a little more time, but man, so far it just seems like same song, different verse.
@William...bum is the best term I can come up with for a 28 year old rookie qb who played in a pass happy college conference, sat out of football for 5 years, is slow footed, and played in an offense that doesn't resemble anything that is run in the NFL.
I felt the browns reached (that is being polite) for him at the end of the 1st rd. As a 28 year old rookie, who is playing for a new owner and most likely a lame duck front office, he only gets this year to prove himself or he won't just be out of a job with the browns, he could quite possibly be out of the NFL period.
Is he a bum? No, actually I met him at the casino in Cleveland and he was a really nice guy. Almost made me change my mind about him, but end of the day being a nice guy doesn't win football games or make you a good qb.
So my apologies for using the word bum. Bad NFL quarterback would probably have been better
Also, William, it is my opinion that he is not a good QB. It doesn't make me impatient or stupid, but I appreciate your personal attacks. Believe it or not, I actually based my opinion on Weeden on more than yesterday. Infact, yesterday only confirmed by feelings for him. Again though,..thanks, I appreciate the personal attacks
"They don't know what they don't know." - Coach Mick
It's actually too late. They were in the sweepstakes before the draft started.. they just clearly didn't know it yet with their second first round selection.
For the record he didn't "sit out of football for 5 years". The guy was a first round pick of the Yankees. Probably give the baseball career a try if you are a 1st round pick.
vacuuming sucks
I dont think anyone is dogging him for taking the baseball route first, I know I would. But the results are typically not good for the pro level. Look at Chris Weinke and Drew Henson
Doesn't matter what he was doing for those 5 years, it wasn't playing QB.
I'm not dogging Bradon Weeden, I'm sure he's a great guy but that doesn't mean he's a good QB
"They don't know what they don't know." - Coach Mick
If Shurmur is done at the end of the year it's likely Weeden will be as well. Some NFL coaches want to come in and clear house to be able to win with their guys. Ex. Eric Mangini
It's not possible to feel good about Weeden being your QB after watching his performace against RGIII's. Of course they will take a QB, but they have to find two Guards and a WR in there somewhere as well.
NC Buckeye.
I don't follow the Browns that much, but judging from their game yesterday, I would take Barrett Jones with the #1 pick.
Barring some freak injury, Jones looks like the most NFL-ready O-lineman this year and should be able to lock down a starting job somewhere on the Browns' line. They used a top 5 pick and a #22 to get a RB and QB, why not use the next few drafts to give those guys some blocking/protection?
yea i never really understood why you would draft a quarterback who is older than aaron rodgers and still has to develop. or why you draft a running back with knee injuries at 5(?). It just is frustrating watching the Browns make really strange picks year after year. Also, if you go look at the draft order, it certainly didnt seem like anybody would trade up or down to get Weeden. They could have gotten him at 34(?). My remembrance of the draft is fuzzy, but what other team really needed a quarterback? Maybe Seattle, Arizona, Minnesota? but they seemed unlikely to reach for Weeden. I dont know, its just confusing.
"Who cares? Go Bucks." - Aaron Untch
I posted this in another thread. If we have #1 I can't see us taking another QB, so ideally we'd trade down to 3-5 and pick up picks a la St. Louis this year. From there we could take Robert Woods or the best OL available.
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
Barrett Jones?? He's a C. We've got a first round young talented C. I know he played LT last year but if he were a LT worthy of the #1 pick I'm guessing Saban wouldn't have moved him to C and he wouldn't have come back for his senior year.
If the Browns are picking first overall, and they wil be in contention to, they should absolutely take Barkley. Taking a 28 year old quarterback was yet another sign the Browns have one of the worst front offices in the NFL. Weeden's age means he has to be good fast because he is a rookie at the age most quarterbacks are in their prime. You CANNOT win in the NFL without an elite quarterback, and Barkley is a mortal lock for the number one pick for a good reason.
New owner, presumably new president, and possibly new GM. If they end up with the first pick there is zero doubt they choose Matt Barkley. And it would be a smart decision.
Colt wins that game Sunday.
^yep. Even if we are sitting at #1 come draft day, we won't take Barkley... instead we will trade down for more picks so we can continue the 13 year rebuilding process. Barkley goes somewhere else, becomes a Pro Bowler. Why couldn't we just suck for Luck? It would have been awesome to finally get a top notch QB.
Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.
Barkley looks very impressive, the only thing that scares me about him is he plays at talent loaded USC, where it seems like they always have NFL QB's until they get into the league. I'm more optimistic about Barkley, he makes big time throws, and I think he helps his WR's as much as they help him. Not like Sanchez. Glad the Browns traded that pick.
Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.
yes colt wins that game sunday and weeden watches how it is done, especially since weeden looks clueless
This just must be part of Holmgren's master plan to get Barkley...
"They don't know what they don't know." - Coach Mick
Holmgren is a USC grad...He played QB there himself in the 60's.
I have a hard time believing TENNBUCKEYE19's comment.
/Duff'd It
No he's right, Holmgren played there and was on their national title team in 1967.
Why would I make that up? Look it up if you want, but it's true.
Nothing like jumping off the bridge after week one....but man I couldn't blame you if you did. 6 total turn overs is a hell of a start for Weadon...and 39 total yards for an already injured Richardson. I'd say Cleveland wins 3 may be 4 games...so you could be right about Barkley. Unless there's worse teams than that ^^^^

is it too early to pull the trigger on weeden in 1 yr?
After one game? Let me think about it. Yes.
There are currently 16 winless NFL teams, and several that obviously had worse weeks than the Browns (Jacksonville, Kansas City, and Ohio's other professional team come to mind). Are we going to ask the same question of all of them too?

Hmmm...I seem to remember another pitcher coming back to football although at a lower level.

We are in it as much as Philadelphia is!
Wherever you are, there you be!
Never would have imagined Holmgrem was in such good shape! I would have guess he played on the line not QB! Makes sense though he always had good QB's.
Wherever you are, there you be!
i said b4 and ill say again weeden was a terrible pick at the end of the first round. however, i dont think the answer is barkley, he makes good reads, his accuracy is above average, but his arm strength isnt top tier his height 6'2" (i think is more 6'1") is not desireable. and he plays with an offense that is 2 notches above what he plays against. I dont know who was to blame for the offensive lines problems but it was really really bad. The browns D looked top tier... weeden looked terrible (the worst ive ever seen) any other qb in the league wins that game. if i was the gm i would draft best player available and if that means passing on a qb thats fine. it also doesnt help when people grenade the team and restart every 2 yrs
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
I'd say the Geno Smith sweepstakes.
How do people stomach this expansion team anyway? Are the coaches calling for 3&outs? I don't get the strategy in that. I guess I just prefer a team with a richer tradition, like a Carolina Panther or a Jacksonville Jaguar.
Bucktooooooth, heeyaw.
@STATUTORYGLORY
Barrett Jones has played all over the line, he was recruited as a center out of high school, but has spent time at LT, RG, and now is finally at C. So far Jones has played all 3 positions at a high-level, I don't think that versatility should hurt his draft stock. Saban probably moved Jones over to center so that Cyrus Kouandjio could get on the field after coming back from a season-ending injury last year. It also helps that 'Bama lost a 4-year starter at center in William Vlachos, so inserting your best overall senior lineman and reigning Outland Trophy winner at that position is probably the best way to ensure a seamless transition.
Who cares how good Jones is or what position he plays. Picking an offensive lineman, or any other position, over a QB is dumb when you don't have a QB. Taking Jake Long over Matt Ryan has worked out really well for the Dolphins.
@Conroy
I see your point, but I think lacking in both positions is equally detrimental (see: David Carr). Maybe I'm just a biased believer of winning the "battle in the trenches," but my thinking why not improve Weeden's chance of success by giving him some extra protection. At the same time they'll be improving the running game for their #3 overall pick.
