Your all-time "it factor" defense

Hey guys - was thinking about this the other day.....what if you could assemble a defense of former/current buckeyes, that had a certain "it factor" (i.e. good hitter, good nose for the ball, toughness/saltiness.....all qualities that don't necessarily show up in the stat sheet or 40 times).

An example of this would be:

  • Andy Katzenmoyer was considered one of the best MLB's to play for OSU in the past 20 years, but for some reason I'd rather have Matt Wilhelm.
  • The same could be said for Shawn Springs, but I'd rather have Antoine Winfield on my side.

So if you could assemble an all-time team of these type of players, and you had to win ONE game, or make a single goal-line stand, Who would you come up with?

Here are my picks below (keep in mind I am not old enough to have watched the OSU players pre-Cooper days).

  • DE: John Simon
  • DT: Tim Anderson
  • DT: Kenny Peterson
  • DE: Cam Heyward
  • LB: Matt Wilhelm
  • LB: AJ Hawk
  • Star: Jermale Hines
  • CB: Antoine Winfield
  • CB: Malcolm Jenkins
  • Safety: Mike Doss
  • Safety: Donte Whitner

This defense would never lose, to anyone.  Who else would make the two-deep?

He did well, especially considering he played with Carpenter on one side, and Hawk on the other - both very mobile.  Schlegel was a good compliment to those two, an ideal gap plugger.

Wilhelm over Laurinitus?  That seems to be a bit of a reach.

Will Smith deserves some consideration too.

Tatum would be another safety who should be there...talk about WR's in fear!

The biggest miss in my opinion on your list is Spielman, were is the love for an all time great?

I would change to Will Smith, and Cam Heyward at DE. Dan Wilkinson  and I'm not sure who else at DT. James Laurenitus, Chris Spielman, Andy Katzemoyer for Linebackers. Shawn Springs and Malcolm Jenkins at CB. Winfield was an awesome hitter but I still get agravated with him for getting burned so bad against Plaxico. I guess Mike Doss and Jack Tatum at S. I never got to see Jack Tatum play but I mean come on, the guy is in the NFL HOF and is considered one of the best. I was to young to remember Chris Spielman with the Buckeyes but I do remember him as a Lion and he was fierce! I might trade places with Laurenitus for A.J. Hawk. Cant go wrong either way!

I've only been watching since the mid-90's.  So while I know about the reputations of Tatum, Spielman, etc, I never watched them with my own eyes, if that makes sense.  So my picks were from about 1997 and on.

I think with the picks from '97 on, that defense would be amazing!

Your list was fine Ken-Yon! It's not easy to make a list when your going over all the Buckeye greats.

Nice reciever by the way!

I like Rural Meyer's the best IMO...more of a combo of my generation and my dad's.  Good stuff...

I love these lists because they remind me how spoiled we've been as fans. Our defenses have been just ridiculous.

DE: Mike Kudla. He wasn't flashy, but he always seemed to be always around the ball. I'd vote him on the two deep behind Vrabel.

Dustin Fox used to get turned around all the time ODEEZ33O. Great athlete but he was a liability on the field. But I agree with most, you gotta find a way to put Big Daddy Dan, Jack Tatum, Chris Spielman, Andy Katz, and Shawn Springs on that list. Springs was probably the best cover corner to come out of OSU.
