Stoneburner to Wide Receiver

Land Grand Holy Land is quoting Dave Biddle's twitter report that Jake Stoneburner is no longer a TE and has been moved to WR.  Personally, I find this move pretty surprising.  I hope it works out.

I like this a lot. I wonder how much of it is because of Zach Boren's tremendous off season and the ability to have him play the H-Back.

I imagine Stoney will be used in a flex role sort of like Aaron Hernandez was at Florida. He'll probably still line up at TE sometimes. He's a great athlete and will be productive anywhere he lines up imo. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

Wow. Does that say more about the wide receiver situation or the tight end situation or what?

I feel like we've heard this the last 2 years. I'll believe it when I see it.

It's pretty silly of an idea to be honest, he is fast yes..but he's not going to beat  corners at 245 pounds. Al these last mInute knee jerk position changes are pretty useless IMO.

urban knows what he is doing, has two national titles and did it coaching in the SEC. i  trust in urban, for i do not have two national titles, as i believe most commenters here dont either. stony at wide receiver? why not?

@buckeyejason 245 pounds or not, didn't he go into last season running a timed 4.4? Everyone else got faster this year so even if that was an inflated time, the dude still has some wheels.

I love it. OSU needs to get their best players on the field and from the sound of things, this is how Urban can get Boren, Stoney, and the other 2 TEs on the field at the same time.

Don't give up... Don't ever give up.

I think this is where he would have been the majority of formations anyway.  So why not make him a wide out?  Not much of a shocker really...Heuerman has been ripping it up anyways...so Fragel going to Oline would have happened probably either way due to lack of #s.  Vannett and Heuerman will do just fine...don't be surprised if Baugh goes to a slot in majority of formations he's in when he arrives next year.  The old days of double tight are over folks...unless it's 4th and 1 and even then I'm not so sure you'll ever see it.

Two things:

1) Didn't he play WR in high school?

2) Does the name of your position really matter that much in an Urban Meyer offense? Everybody gets used at what they are good at, regardless of traditional position definition (see: Tebow, Tim and Harvin, Percy).

kareemabduljacobb's picture
kareemabduljacobb on 12 Aug 2012 - 6:09pm #

He'll still play TE, I just read some stuff on buckeyenation on ESPN quoting Meyer as he plans to use Stoney in the A Hernandez role where he can line up at TE or flank out to WR/Slot.  He likes what we have in Heurman and Vannett as far as covering for the TE spots if Stoney is flanked out.

I also thought it was interesting what Meyer had to say about Guiton how he has a package where both him and Miller see the field and was talking about if Guiton is in the top 11 (on offense) he'll try to get him on the field some.   Seems like Meyer likes what he sees out of Guiton at least from a backup/new wrinkle stand point.

He was a WR in high school, and he's worked with the WR group before, since they have little leadership.  I doubt he's going to be a pure WR much.  I think they'll keep moving him around to create mismatches.  He'll play TE, slot, maybe even outside.  They'll be running no huddle and forcing the same 11 to defend him at different positions.  It'll be fun to watch.

I looked forward to him burning LBs and safeties :\ although it does make me feel better about the WR group. Smith, Brown, Stoneburner (slot) isn't a bad way to go.

Throw in guys like Verlon, Mike, Evan, TY, and Jordan Hall on 5 WR and spread sets and that's not a bad crop of guys.

Honestly I think this is typical Urban Meyer football. He doesn't make players fit into a set offense, he adapts his offense to make the most of his playmakers. If Stoney is his 3rd best playmaker at receiver, he'll change his sets to use that. We all know that Urban is a straight shooter, but he's also a master of psychology. This could be both to increase Stoney's confidence that he's a major player in this offense, or it could be to scramble opponent's defensive game plans.

Probably just means he's a shitty blocker, at least compared to the other TE's.  Might as well use his strengths and get him in the slot

LouGroza's picture
LouGroza on 12 Aug 2012 - 8:09pm #

Its all about mismatches anywhere on the field in our offense and Stony will definitely provide that. Great idea and not really unexpected. Even if he remained listed at TE he would have lined up in various positions including WR.

I believe I've heard conerbacks  hearts, all over the nation, begin to flutter.

Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.

No offense Blazers34, but Urban's base offense doesn't line any TEs up as a sixth blocker. He is all about the mathematical mismatch. And if a player was 'shitty' at his assignment it's unlikely he wouldn't just be replaced. This isn't Tresselball where the half-talented seniors all play because they've 'put in their time.'

blazers34's picture
blazers34 on 12 Aug 2012 - 9:13pm #

I didnt say he was half talented, but everyone knows that blocking isnt exactly his forte.  Not banging on Jake, I think its smart to split him out wide and use him to his strengths.  And I'm gonna assume that Huerman and Vannet will do a fair amount of blocking this year

It's just my opinion, that's all. Let's hope he catches 40 balls and 10 td's this year.

So if he's going to play a flex role and still line up at TE, why bother changing his position?? If he goes pro (probably will) he's going to play TE for sure. I just dont see the point in even changing his position. Cant he technically do the same thing being labeled a TE? Stoney is fast but hes more of a straight line gotta get moving fast. Def a problem for LB's to cover but he has no chance shaking a CB. But I trust in Urban!

P.S. Anybody else think Urbz is fixated on Florida?? I know he had alot of success there and that was his most recent gig, but man I get tired of all the Florida comparisions lol. Enough with the Percy Harvin, Tim Tebow, etc references. This is Ohio State and the thought of Florida still brings back alot of pain and bad memories for alot of us lol.

He's only using florida and those players and how he used them as a point of reference.

Crimson's picture

I don't think it changes much.  He's still going to do what he was going to do before.  If anything, it's a way for him to provide more leadership the the WRs.  Also, 6'5" is a mismatch for most CBs regardless.

I think Urban is desensatizing us, so that we'll be okay with his history.  Let's face it, he got around a little before he comitted to OSU, and we have to learn to accept his past before we can fully embrace him.

As Dan said, it's a point of reference.  After this year, he'll call it the Stoney position.  :-)

Fragel probably wouldn't start at TE even with Stoneburner at WR.

He probably isn't complaining, he'll be the starting RT.
