Say you have a friend. That friend claims to be a diehard OSU fan. Keep in mind he was born and raised in Michigan and he is surrounded by friends and family that are big Michigan fans. He still lives there as well. He goes to OSU games and knows a lot about Ohio State. Now he has been invited to multiple Michigan games featuring non Ohio State opponents. But not only has he went to these, no problem there, but he admits to rocking out Michigan gear, pretending to like them, and cheers for them to win. He claims to do this out of respect for the tickets he gets to the games. Anybody else see where I question the OSU fanhood here? My attitude is he can be just as respectful without donning the maize and blue jersey, pretending to like them, and cheering for them to win.
Am I right or wrong here in viewing him as fake as can be and a not really that much of an Ohio State fan?
Yes, that is the definition of a fake fan.
Is this friend named Brady Hoke?
****igan smells like old water that hot dogs were boiled in. FACT
If he's straight but gets invited to a lot of "not straight" clubs and just out of respect for everyone else there... :)
D. Anthony
You should rat him out at a OSU vs. Michigan game. Now that would be funny!
Ohio State's band SLAUGHTERED Michigan's band. If this were a football game, it would have been Florida State vs. Savannah State. - SB Nation following OSU vs. UM 2012
Totally using that "not straight" clubs line on him.
Also, flip the situation and imagine a UM fan instead of the Ohio State fan. Would you have any respect for the UM "fan" rocking osu gear, etc?
Unbelievable.
Disgusting
I just threw up everywhere. happy friday
I just vomitted. He could wear street clothes or a jacket/coat that is not affiliated with any team.
I understand the respect thing, but when I was invited to attend an OSU/Purdue game in Columbus (on the condition that I didn't root for Purdue), I wore a Michigan t-shirt under an black jacket. By the end of the 3rd quarter my hands shot to the sky involuntarily and hoots and hollers escaped my mouth when Steve Bellisari was sacked and the momentum shifted. I didn't get out of control or anything, but my true colors were revealed.
Edit: I guess we both have weak stomachs, dubjay

@D.Anthony Bad example, I've gone to gay bars because I don't have to pay for drinks. I have a girlfriend, so if I'm not trying to pick up girls, it doesn't matter what the bar is, and other people buy my drinks.
I've been to many UK games at Rupp Arena and have not rocked their gear. I didn't wear Ohio State stuff to the game either out of respect fo my friend and I didn't cheer against UK, but I sure as hell wasn't jumping up and down and going nuts when UK did something good. There are some venues in sports where if you get a chance to go see a game, you just don't say no. That doesn't mean you have to "act" like you are one of their teams fans.
Thats treason. Back in the old days, people were shot for such offenses.

POSER!
Not a big deal. If he's just being courteous, what does it matter? Whenever I'm home I go to NC State games with friends all the time and rock NCSU gear. Then again, NCSU is my "second team."
Edit: It's ok to root for Michigan when they aren't playing OSU folks, in fact it's even ok to wear a Michigan shirt. It doesn't make you any less of a fan. Also Buck-I.8, that's fricking brilliant.
@William, I thought that was a thing that everyone did, but I guess not
INTERVENTION! (always sunny- style)
WB
I've never even thought of that. Where's the nearest gay bar in respect to campus? The Short North?
Have to disagree william. It's never ok for a Michigan fan to wear anything OSU and vice versa. The only time this would be appropriate is after a lost bet. I don't even like it when a friend wears OSU shirts and sits on my couch.

This is one of my favorite 11W threads ever.
@William, yeah, for some reason there are none on campus, despite being such a diverse university.
@william if this guys friends had any respect for him they would accept his fandom and not make him feel he needs to don sun and blue apparel to appease them.
I won't even wear things that are Michigan-like colors. Ever. I switched teams in my rec soccer league because the uniforms were just too close.
@William
Yeah I'm gonna have to go ahead and completely disagree with you. I'd say a VAST majority of Buckeye fans would never say it is perfectly fine to sport Michigan gear at any time, ever. Even in a casket.

In my mind it's an article of clothing, big deal...
@William I completely disagree buddy! Its NEVER ok to wear michigan gear when your an OSU fan...EVER. Cut em up and use them as rags? Maybe, but I couldnt imagine walking around in maize and blue knowing my heart bleeds scarlet & gray! Your right its a article of clothing, but its a article of clothing that represents michigan!!!
William probably doesn't care because he wears Scum gear on the down low.

^Sure I have a Michigan shirt. I also have USC, Colorado, Stanford, NC State, Hobart, amd Slippery Rock shirts. To me it's just something to wear...
I used to wipe my ass with cut up scUM shirts. I had to stop because the toilet kept getting clog. I believed it was scUM's way of getting back at me and clogging my toilet, causing water to pour over the side of the bowl..... I hate that team.....
Its all good buddy boy.

@william do you have a soviet union tshirt? We had a rivalry with them for the longest time...People typically wear articles of clothing of topics they supports...wearing a Michigan shirt indicates you support scUM
Symbols do have meaning, ya know.
Don't take this the wrong way- I'm not saying sports is anything other than a game in terms of importance, and I'm not making light of tragedy- but like you say "it's an article of clothing" you could say a swastika tattoo is "just a tattoo." Symbols and colors have meanings.
Again, I am NOT minimizing the Holocaust...and I am NOT comparing Michigan fans to Nazis...
Nope. But a sickle and hammer shirt would be decent looking. I thought the Michigan shirt was funny, simply because it alluded to their Sugar Bowl win by using a Def Leppard song..

That is very unusual. It'd be one thing if it were a team that doesn't have the biggest blood feud in all of sports with Ohio State. But for it to be Michigan? At first I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, but the more I think about it...No...rule number one for any Ohio State fan is to never wear their sh*t colors on your person (unless, of course, you're a casual fan who's indifferent towards Michigan, and you wear the occasional yellow and blue striped polo shirt or something...not that I have worn one of those in over 10 years). I didn't know much about the Ohio State-Michigan thing until I started looking at colleges. I didn't follow football at all until then. I told my dad that I was thinking about Michigan because it is a top engineering school. He said, "You will never wear those colors in my house" and he didn't even go to OSU, but grew up rooting for the Bucks. Then it all made sense because I remember him calling a team that wore blue and yellow "dirty" after they won some game on New Years Day a few years earlier.
You definitely don't root for them as if they're your team unless they're playing a mututal enemy like Florida (and even then you should feel slimy and guilty afterward like you just hooked up with a fat chick). Michigan is a mortal enemy. You can't act like one of them. I don't know if I would call him "fake." He just has his head up his own *ss.
A friend of mine thought it would be funny to wear his Charles Woodson jersey to my house for the '06 scUM game. He is not a fan of TTUN, just a fan of football jersey's in general. That jersey was promptly removed and left outside in the cold before he was even allowed to come in to my home. And that's the way it should be. Unless I lose a bet, you'll NEVER catch me in scUM gear. Respect or not
If Denard Robinson isn't careful with spooning all that food into his mouth, he's going to end up lookin' like Whoopi Goldberg
@William I'm going to have to call on Gopnik's amendment and state that it is indeed okay to reference Nazis while discussing TTUN since they are truly hated because of their otherness!
During basketball season last spring I locked my 10 year old nephew and his friend out of the house because they jokingly rooted for Michigian State. There were no arguments from anyone else in the house. Go Bucks!

^^^ YES!!! Children need to learn at an early age....
@Buck-I.8...you missed the point. You can go there but if you are dressind, just like, cheer just like and acting like something you aren't i.e a Mich fan or a gay person then you are totally misrepresenting yourself.
D. Anthony
its never ok to wear that crap
O H I O is the Buckeye State
@buck-i 8 wow..... to the gay bar story. I can't imagine what you're casual conversation with the drink buyer is.
~Because we couldn't go for three~
Immediately thought of this song by Crosby, Stills and Nash, thought it was apropos:

I can understand said friend enjoying the college game day experience and company of friends. But to wholly embrace the TSUN experience while claiming to be a big OSU fan? I want to say to him, umm, NO. What the hell is wrong with you? Can't wear a TSUN shirt and act like a giddy TSUNite. Turn in your OSU fan card.
you realize gay people are just people, right? You can talk to them, they won't bite your head off
Never ok to wear Michig*n stuff. I would never do it. I won't go (and have been invited) to an OSU/Michig*n game in Ann Arbor, because it would be disgusting to be around 100,000 Michig*n fans wearing their disgusting gear. It pizzez me off a tad seeing douches walking around cedar point or the Toledo Zoo wearing that crap.
No comment on either gays or michigan fans or gay michigan fans. I want to stay out of trouble today, at least until after dark.
Gross.
@Buck-I.8 I may go to a gay bar, but there iis no way that I want to be mistaken for someone that is there for any other reason than to socialize with a friend who happens to be gay. To go to one with the goal of getting free drinks, then I would refer to an old joke with the punch line of "...well, we have already established what you are, now we are just haggling over price!"
The same would apply to wearing scUM gear.
“...indomitable in victory, insufferable in defeat.” Woody Hayes
EDIT: Over it. You can't change a closed mind
The only approiate use of M*ch*g*n appearel by an Ohio State fan is when you run out of toilet paper and have to wipe...
I went to the TSUN vs. Ball State game in 2007 (I think... and Brady Hoke might have been the HC for Ball State then) and wore completely neutral clothes.
Buck-I.8: I don't think pompano is being a homophobe. U stated you went to gay bars to get free drinks. Why would a straight dude buy a girl in a "straight bar" a drink? Spoiler: because he's hitting on her. So u purposely misrepresent yourself to get something for free. I'm not a homophobe, but more importantly, I'm not dishonest.
...and I would never, ever, wear *ichigan gear. I don't let my kids even wear blue and yellow. I would respect *ichigan fans who would never wear scarlet and grey. Not to mention, I wouldn't want Buckeye gear all smelled up like that.
smh at 72% of all of this. so, SO much insecurity re: 'fandom' and other things.
Taquitos.
I bet several of these sun and blue colored fans above also vomited last night...when you all saw that halftime score. I personally was dancing around my TV like a wild Indian who had just scalped his most hated rival tribe leader (this after watching our tribe LIVE stomp a mudhole on the Red Hawks). Foreshadowing perhaps???? Only 83 days away till ALL bragging rights are ours again...like the last 9-10 years were (or maybe we can hear all those "we have the best overall record from stats back from 1900-1960"...LMAO). Oh it will be great times...great times indeed. We're not as good as Alabama...(yet) but we can beat some skunk weasels...this I guarantee!
