Ohio's Native Son: Brady Hoke

In answering a question regarding the origins of his Mi$$%#$n fandom, despite his Ohio roots, Brady Hoke had this to say:

All my buddies were Ohio fans, and my dad played for Coach [Woody] Hayes at Miami of Ohio and had a deep respect for him. I like to go against the grain sometimes, and I think I started rooting for Michigan just to be different.

In case you were wondering, Brady Hoke is THAT guy.  You all know him.  We have gone to school with him, played sports with him, worked with him.  He's not just the guy that always has to be different.  He's the guy that wants to be CONTROVERSIAL.   Being like everyone else is not for this guy.  He's got an edge, he's different.  Except he's not.  He's just like all the rest of us, and he doesn't like it.  So you know what, he'll show you.  You like football?  See how you like it when he shows up with your rival's jersey on, cheering for a team he has absolutely affiliation with.  That will show you how controversial and edgy he is.  He's not scared to be different.  GRRRRRRR.  In your face.

I think thats a load of crap. He is probably just saying this because he now coaches at scUM. What a sh*tstrom he would conjure up if he said he used to be a fan of THE Ohio State University. heh. Only Jabba knows though, errr, i mean, Hoke.....

Interesting that a lot of his friends were Bobcat fans... must have been a golden era of Ohio U football back then...

This is why I think he is all smoke and mirrors. He happened to make a pit stop as an assistant coach there a few years back. By default he somehow ended up with the head job there and he was crowned as some sort of magical coach. One of only a few mystical beings that get what it supposedly takes to be the coach there. After all, he had a 52% winning record prior to the gig. Every bounce went his way last year. Do not get the stigma to this uninspiring guy.

LouGroza...8 years is a pit stop?

To all of you who are appalled by an Ohio guy liking another school:  Really?  By some of your thinking (that all should be OSU fans in Ohio), does that mean that people everywhere should have to root for the state's school?  What about Florida, California, Texas, Illinois, and most every state that has more than one big-time football school?  What about all of the Buckeye fans that don't live in Ohio?  Are they wrong?

How boring would it be?

Hail- You can live and another state and root for another school if you have a affiliation with that school. Just to root for a school because you want to be different is what were talking about. Previously to coaching there he was "that guy" every OSU fan knows. They root for scUM just to get on peoples nerves and get attention. If he would of went to college there or his mom was an alum that would be different.

Sorry, Woodysglasses.  Not sure what is "stupid" about any of it, but whatever.  My reason for posting that snippet from Hoke's interview was simple.  It took my level of hatred for Hoke up a couple notches, because now I know that he belongs to a class of people that is common to Ohio -- people who like the state up north just to be assholes to the rest of us.   They won't tell you that; there's typically some connection to a fishing trip or a distant relative, but usually deep down they just want to "go against the grain" like Hoke and be contrarian dickheads.  On a psychological level, I think that makes me understand Hoke better, but what's better is it makes me hate him more.  And in the end that's what it's all about - loving Ohio State, hating the team up north.

Thank you Matt20. I have had the displeasure of being around many "that guys" in my time. Makes you wonder if they are a fan at all or just want most of all to annoy people. Have no problem with a truly passionate fan of any team. To root for or claim to have a connection to a team because it pissed off others? And as the head coach to expose that for what it is? Think I would have kept that one to myself.

Hail, I'm faulting the origins of the fandom.  I think it is lame and uncreative to pick a team just to be different.  It's just my personal opinion that the experience of being a fan should originate out of some kind of connection you have with that team or fanbase, not something as arbitrary and shallow as wanting to be different from everyone else.  I think OH scUM fans (no affiliation with the university or state) are even worse because they are picking a team solely because it is the opposite of what everyone else is doing.  So not only are they uncreative, they are pricks as well.  Psychologically speaking, I think it speaks volumes.  Or it says nothing.  Whatever it is, it's annoying.

Sounds a little like he did it to piss his dad off.  I can give a rat's a$$ as to why someone starts to like a team as long as that reason isn't "they just won the championship and now I like them."  Some people root for schools because of their colors or a certain player, others because they are from a certain area or have family ties, and, of course, those who attend or whose family attended said school.  I get what you all are saying.  i guess I'm just saying it doesn't bother me.

My question, now, is how many coaches are coaching for their childhood favorites?  I think Hoke and I assume Urban (maybe he like ND more?) are the minority.

@McLovin - I'm confused why you think this is so strange?  I'm from Ohio and when I was young that was part of the reason I became a Michigan fan.  I find it comical/arrogant of you that you think this is so absurbed.

I have a lot of friends that root for UM because they wanted to be different/their friends did.  I had a really strange childhood: growing up in the Columbus suburbs (Hilliard), but probably 80% of my close friends that liked football were UM fans...weird.

Maybe explain your reasoning behind this?  Or maybe I just don't get your humor at all.  I don't care if this topic was about any coach, pointless and wasn't even funny when you tried to make it.

MCLOVIN, don't hate on people being "that guy".  Being "that guy" is how I came to love Ohio State.  I'm not from Ohio, I didn't even play football.  In fact, I started liking Ohio State for 2 reasons.  1) I was about 11 years old and my mom went to the local Value City and came home with a bunch of T-Shirts for me to basically ruin all summer as I ran around and crashed bikes and played baseball with friends etc.  One of those shirts was a Buckeye T-shirt and I got so many comment on that shirt when I wore out in public.  I'd get Ohio State?  What the heck?  Or Heck yeah Go Bucks.  One thing I know is, kid or adult commented on the shirt, and I liked it.

2) I live in NKY, so you had college football fans who either only pulled for SEC teams because UK stunk, or you happened to have Michigan and Notre Dame fans.  I went to a catholic school so we had a ton of Notre Dame folks, UK fans who cheered all SEC, or ugh Michigan fans.  I didn't like Notre Dame, Even at a young age I didn't get the point of cheering for a whole conference, and the 10 kids or so in my class that loved Michigan were D-bags(I didn't know the term then but I certainly would of called them that back in 6th grade if I did know it lol) So, I turn on the TV one Saturday afternoon and watch Eddie George and the Buckeyes destroy Notre Dame.  I was in love!

They next week for gym class I wore my Ohio State shirt, the Notre Dame fans didn't say a word after the beat down they just got, the UK/SEC and Michigan fans certainly had comments, and I fired right back.  Yep, I was definitely "that guy" even when Michigan kept beating the Buckeyes basically my whole middle and high school career, I kept being that guy.  I was different, I stood out, I loved the Buckeyes, and in my mind I was a Buckeye and they just didn't understand because they weren't.

scUM fan from Ohio: I can see where your reading of the post would be skewed and how you would not find any humor any it (although I sincerely was not trying to be funny). I said I don't like scUM fans from OH.  You are a scUM fan from OH.  Clearly we're not going to be best buds.  I'm OK with that.  You can't make everyone happy.  The audience for which the post was intended is native Ohioans who know how annoying Ohio scUM fans are.  As this is an Ohio State football site, that audience is vast.  Excuse me if you found my posting pointless and bereft of humor.  It is interesting to note, in that vein, that the editorial staff of this website found the very same portion of the interview interesting and relavant enough to post as a Buckshot.  So take that for what it's worth.

With all due respect, BTALBERT25, I have a lot of family in northern KY, and I know "that guy" down there is usually a Louisville basketball fan who is from anywhere but Louisville.  But I take your point.

Basketball fans and football fans are a little different.  If you like Louisville football it just doesn't really mean that much but pretty much if you have the audacity to cheer for any basketball team that isn't UK, you are that guy lol.  People talk crap to me all the time about Ohio State's basketball team.  I just reply and to think, we don't even really care about basketball and we've made as many final fours as you have the last 13 years(more if you count the one that didn't count lol).

I know that's not neccessarily the truth about the basketball team(in terms of level of interest), but it really pisses them off.
