I asked a friend who is an OSU fan, if he had watched ESPN's All Access last night. His answer surprised me, "No, we are going to have a horrible year. We can't play in a bowl game so why bother watching." I told him that I disagreed and that I can't wait to see how we play, which in my opinion will be much better than last year. His response, "Meyer isn't going to show anything new, he won't show his cards. This will be nothing but a disappointing year. Mark this in your book, USC will be the National Champions this year. They should have been in the game the last three years (if it wasn't for the sanctions.)"
I was a little taken aback by his comments, there is a reason we call him Debbie Downer. I couldn't disagree with him more. After watching that show last night, I can't wait to see how the team dominates on the field.
This year will be anything but disappointing.
As for this year's NC, I haven't really thought that far ahead, have you?

Sounds like a closet scUM fan to me
You need new friends. Meyer will show whatever he wants and will attempt to eviscerate EVERY SINGLE TEAM he plays this season. Bowl game or not, the notion that Meyer is going to go vanilla is absolutely absurd.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
Um, they lost 2 regular season games last year. There were like 5 teams that would have been ranked ahead of them with 0 or 1 loss. He's Debbie Wronger in addition to being Debbie Downer
When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."
Not to mention Meyer himself said there is no buffer year at Ohio State. He and his team will be playing to win.
Honestly the lack of a bowl game will make me less anxious while watching because knowing that one loss won't ruin a shot at a NC or bowl game, it will be less stressful. Next year on the other hand I might have to invite a cardiologist to watch with me.
all due respect, but your "friend" is an idiot
USC should've been in the NC the last 3 years?
2009 regular season: 8-4
2010 regular season: 8-5
2011 regular season: 10-2
Uh, no.
Not a bad pick for the NC this year, though. But he's wrong on everything else. I'm sure Urban's the kind of guy that's going to be conservative this year and not really show his cards until 2013. Right. I'm sure he doesn't care about going 12-0 because that'll get us to the same bowl game as 3-9 would. That's the Urban Meyer we all know. Ahh, shit, got a drop of sarcasm in my eye...
Class of 2010.
Show his cards? Everyone already knows every card in his deck. We openly disect plays on this forum and we don't work full time as coaches.
If you really want to make a statement, it's this year, specifically because there is no bowl game. 12-0 would say more than anything. Even 11-1, 10-2, and 9-3 would be screaming from the mountain tops.
jenks missed the sarcasm dripping from that comment... must have had his safety goggles on.
I always thought that to get the best recruits, you have to have a horrible year. (I should have been wearing those safety glasses.)
RCS, your friend is a USC fan. If he isn't excited about this year he could not possibly be a Buckeye fan.
Ha, you got troll'd in real life. He's just trying to get you p*ssed off because he knows he can.
But, that isn't to say there aren't Debbie Downers out there. I used to watch the games with a married couple who also went to Ohio State. It stopped being fun because after every play he'd say, "We suck" or "We're gonna lose." Thing is, he wasn't even really watching the games...he was fiddling with his laptop the whole time. Then, the one or two times a year we'd actually lose, he'd say "I told you we suck." So, eventually that was that, and I watch them at home now...lol.
P.S. The last straw was when he came over to my place for the 2010 Penn State game. He asked what should he bring. I said "nothing, just yourself and your jersey. I got the food and beer covered." He showed up in a dark blue warmup jacket. FACEPALM.
You know sometimes its ok to kick a buddies ass right! And as for a Nat. Champ who knows that's why we play the game! USC could flop one to Washington or someone else for all we know.
Wherever you are, there you be!
the point is: never concede
He doesn't sound very smart. Just my opinion.
That is the problem with some fans. Fair weather fandom is sad! He is a debbie downer and also OSU could still win a NC. They would have to be the top team in the AP poll since they can't go to a bowl and play for the BCS. Doesn't mean this year is going to be horrible!
I know you are doing this to bust his chops but really anyone who is a fan of this team should watch the games just because they are a fan. Why can't it just be about supporting your favorite team.
@ Bucksfan - He truly sounds like the guy you used to watch the games with, he can't stand to give a good word. He likes to argue his point even though he usually has no idea what his point is.
One of my stepbros is being sort of a Debbie Downer for this season. "We don't have the talent." "The spread won't work in the Big Ten." "They moved a Tight End to Offensive Tackle!"
After a couple games, I hope he'll change his tune...
Your friend is an idiot... just take the USC comment and he clearly is talking outta his ...
Not a true buckeye fan. Get rid of him. I think OSU will go undefeated every year. (wishful thinking) but you know where my hearts at. O - H!
Sorry...that guy is not a Buckeye....there is alot to play for this year....you should've smacked him in the head!!!
@Squirrel, being tops in the AP is not winning a NC. The poll is meaningless since it got booted from the BCS calculation. The only reason anyone still talks about it is because a) their team is ineligible for the actual NC or b) they are members of the media who vote in it so they think it matters. It doesn't. It's a "split" national championship in the same way that my homemade poll vote for OkieState last year is "split", but...
That being said, I agree with your sentiment that all is not lost just because of the postseason ban. The staff could definitely use that as motivation for those guys, though I'm curious to see how heavily he leans on that. It works until you lose a game, and then what? Your real motivation (winning a NC) was gone from Day 1, and now your substitue motivation is gone (going 12-0). The staff is not short of intensity and I think they'll push the right buttons if they need to be pushed. I do think the team and UM has a lot to prove regardless of whether going undefeated is realistic or not. I think his goal will be putting a product out there that the team, the boaches, and the fans can be proud of regardless of the record. He might internally have a goal of 12-0, but I don't know how much he'll publicize that one. Maybe once we hit 11-0
When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."
Fixed.
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
he sounds like a wiener
I disagree that it will be a horrible year, but I am not expecting double digit wins myself. I wouldn't be surprised if they win 10+ but I wouldn't be all together shocked by an 8-4 season either. Kyle layed out a couple bullet points the other day that explain why I think this. Well at least 2 of the bullets. I don't think the lack of postseason will have much of an impact.
The team has to learn a new offensive system, and yes it's true they should still be better on offense than last year, but there will be mistakes, growing pains, and turnovers, giving the other team chances to score. I think the D will be improved though. I just think with all the inexperience, the new system, and just the team trying to find itself under the new regime, we'll have some WTF just happened out there games. I also think when the team wins, it's going to win pretty. I think the team will be VERY entertaining to watch, but I'm tempering expectations a bit. I think 3-4 losses are in the wheel house and will be pleasantly surprised if they lose 2 or fewer. Like I said, it wouldn't be a shock, just don't think it's likely that this is an 10-12 win team.
Meyer is going to try to drill every team he plays this year. He is going to set a trend and show the 2014 recruits that the Buckeyes are serious and are ready to make a run at the NC. This year will not be a disappointment. If it is I will be ticked because I am going to the Nebraska, Illinois, and Indiana games this year.
@johnny a small one at that... op sorry.
It absolutely is and it absolutely matters. Just look at 2003 with USC and LSU. I'd claim it, OSU would claim it, and I'd every fan would claim it. It's not like the AP poll is some rinky dink poll and to think it is is foolish.
@OSUBIAS Uh, yeah it does count! I would feel just as good about a championship awarded by the Associated Press as much as I would feel about a BCS, computerized whatever you want to call it, championship! For years and years the AP selected the champion for college football. I grew up where they selected the champion. It means something!
In this day and age of bowl bans and conference bias that the NCAA and BCS have turned this whole thing into, the AP poll will select the best team of who they believe (they being the associated press) is the best in the nation. I am not saying it is without fault, but if OSU does happen to go 12-0 and happens to be clearly the best in the nation, then how can we truly believe that the BCS champion is the real champion. Just saying what if. Everyone would know the truth whether OSU is able to play in a bowl or not!
That I would be proud of no matter who the BCS crowns! This team has something to prove, that no matter what the NCAA did to punish them, they can still be champions! They can still be the best team in the nation!
I might have bitch slapped him
Lost in all of this was the fact that the OP did originally ask a question. Its obviously really hard to predict these sorts of things in August so all I can really look at is paper-and on Paper, Bama and LSU are still really really really really good but I'd be utterly shocked if we saw a repeat of last year-someone other than the other is going to beat one of those teams, probably knocking them out of the NC picture. Bama is still my favorite, but USC is clearly primed for a run.
Don't sleep on Oklahoma either. They have the only real threat to Barkely's Heisman run and an offense that can literally score on anyone. Their schedule sets up nicely with KState and ND at home. Texas would worry me but I don't know if Texas will ever be itself under Brown anymore. Oklahoma State, KState, Texas, ND, and WVU are all scary games for anyone to have and they do have to go to WV in November but I really like Oklahoma as the "third team" assuming some SEC school and USC are your favorites at the moment.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
fan card revoked
Why would he not show his cards and run a bland offense?? He's trying to bring in his own guys and his own recruits. Doing that would only hurt his cause in recruiting. That literally makes zero sense. Sounds like a bandwagoner to me. Only wants to root for them when they're winning championships...otherwise he's not interested.
[Ed - Consider this your warning for violating our golden rule (don't be a jerk).]
@ WOODYSGLASSES - Both morons? Because I would like to see the team dominate? Hmmm, ok.
@Rcsvickers, I'd ignore Woodysglasses. I don't think gramps has had his daily dose of soma today...
Can't we all just get along? ;)
My husband would definitely like to see WVU run it or at least ruin another team's chance.
Even he, as WVU fan, can't wait to see what tOSU can accomplish this year.
Im very excited to see what this year has in store! They can take away a bowl game but the cant take away the shit kicking we are gonna give SCum!
Michigan Sucks!
@johnny - Spot on!
@Genestar - he's not a closet Michigan fan, he's just not much of a fan at all.
To all those comments in reply to that article about fandom a couple of days ago, this guys is a prime example of "mediocre" fan. Maybe even a fairweather one.
Hell, I can't wait to see what Urban does this year. Of course, I'm wishing for a complete debacle (no offense). But, the fact is, it's one of the headlines of college football this year.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
