Mark Mangino

Is he assissting the coaching staff or has he just been a spectator at camp?

tennbuckeye19's picture
tennbuckeye19 on 9 Aug 2012 - 12:33pm #

I think he's just a spectator. I had heard he's friends with some of the coaching staff, including Coach Meyer. Also, Coach Warriner was his offensive coordinator at Kansas for several seasons, as well.

osu07asu10's picture
osu07asu10 on 9 Aug 2012 - 12:34pm #

I'd assume there as a spectator, friend of the staff. Was a YSU graduate and former Tress assistant, and I thought he was a one-time assistant for the buckeyes, I believe I am wrong though.

Still, Tress connection, former Ohio boy. I think Warriner may have been on his staff at KU.

Finally, Urban may want him on staff so Jabba the Hoke doesn't get all the ribs, or eat one of Urban's digits in the pre-game convo

I would be very interested in knowing who has the chair contract at Kansas' Athletic Department. They have either sold chairs by the hundreds or make an absolutley unbreakable product. Between Mangino and Weiss, that's like 14 metric tons of coach.

Brewster- When we found out they hired Weis, my friends and I joked that the firing of Turner Gill as HC had more to do with his lack of obesity rather than his poor coaching record at Kansas.

I heard Turner Gill was at Taco Bell after his last season eating Tacos by the handfull. He obviously saw the writing on the wall.

Wouldn't bother me. Fat, angry head coach, brilliant offensive mind. Most guys from the Stoops Tree are REAL solid football coaches.

I still think he is there to prep the team for seeing Hoke on the sideline so that they don't go into shock on game day.  Just got to start ttun game prep from day one.

P.s. he may want to remove that wrist band on right arm, circulation is restricting.

Mangino is a very good offensive coach. I'd like to see him added to the staff in some capacity.

I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.

I find it hard to believe sometimes that people who focus on sports can get to that level. He is not the first or last person to let themselves go ot that level who focus on a sport that requires peak physical condition. I cannot imagine how one can be motivade by someone like that. I know is sounds bad because from a PC level "we shouldn't let that matter," but from a real human level, someone in the position of motivator and leader has to show the characteristics he/she is looking for. You wouldn't want a college dropout now living on the street to be dean of you university, it isn't motivational at all. His image isn't inspiring to go out and do my best, I never understand that.

Nevermind he is playing russian roulette with his life...

Mangino was clocked in at a 9.45 sec 40 at Friday Night Lights.

tennbuckeye19's picture
tennbuckeye19 on 9 Aug 2012 - 5:35pm #

Yes, and that time was clocked by verbally counting "one- one thousand...two-one thousand..."

The only reason Mangino finished the 40 is because his mass forced the field to tilt downward.

How do you guys know that someone like that doesn't have a health problem? Before I got sick, I lifted weights all the time and I looked pretty muscular. But it's been 5 years sense my surgery and if I lifted weights, it would literally kill me. Let me clarify why I can't lift weights before some smartass says I'm lazy. My heart ruptured in 3 places. So the added pressure of weight lifting obviously woulnd't be good. I weigh 300 at 6'4" now. No I'm not as big as Mangino but I'm sure as heck not 250 anymore either.

LouGroza's picture
LouGroza on 9 Aug 2012 - 8:34pm #

Hoke needs to watch that. I think that about him whenever the camera zooms in on that gigantic head.  And in the last 6 months his eyes look like they could pop out of his head and they appear really bloodshot. The guy doesn't look good.

Edit: This was in response to the arteries vids. Not HighBall. No offense meant.

LouGroza's picture
LouGroza on 9 Aug 2012 - 8:36pm #

Mangino has to have health problems of some kind with that weight.

buck-I.8's picture
buck-I.8 on 9 Aug 2012 - 8:38pm #

If they didn't cause his weight, he sure has health issues now

HighBallAce's picture
HighBallAce on 9 Aug 2012 - 8:38pm #

I didn't take it that way at all Lou. I'm not an overly large person to be honest. My health issues were due to a thing called Marfans Syndrome. I was born that way. It made me tall and athletic and very good at basketball. So as a youth, it had it's benefits.

Why the hate for Mangino? I don't understand why some of you feel the need to lambaste a guy who, I'm sure, is well aware of his appearance. If he could change it my guess is that he would. Obviously he can't, so why the vitriol? He's an accomplished coach at the highest level of "amateur" football in this country. He should be respected for that instead of being chastised for his weight...

Not sure that many people were "lambasting" him, more just observing. And why the assumption that he can't change his appearance? While there are many people who have medical issues that lead them to disease, there are also many others who just let it happen, and don't make an effort to change.

I had a friend who was a very large woman. She never really ate much but she also never worked out. At the time I was very thin and had just finished playing ball for the rest of my life. Other than recreational of course. So I was pretty thin and I would tell her that we could go work out together. So she did but to be honest, she couldn't hardly breath and she was so heavy that it did damage to her knee's. Now I'm not making excuses for how she got that way. She was a teacher and sat on her butt all the time. Big people were in her family genes. I never understood why she wouldn't just work out and alot of times I would say to her, dont make excuses, just get up and do it. But as I saw her struggle with "doing it," I realized that for some people, once you get past a certain point, it's a whole lot harder to come back and for others that never have been fit, they have no idea what it's like to be that way in the first place. So they don't know just how good it feels to not be fat. In the end, my friend had bariatric surgery and lost 200lbs! I worry about that because we don't really know the outcome of what that will do to her bones or anything like that. I do know that she looks great and just had a baby 2 years ago and life seems alot better for her.

I hope the extent of Hoke's shortcomings as a football coach remains his [honestly not that big] size.  Fred Flinstone...yeah, that's pretty accurate, though.

i work in the medical industry and from expierience ppl who look like mangino do it to themselves. the best way i can explain it is, some ppl realize what to do and go out and do it, some ppl realize what to do and talk about wanting to do it and making excuses as to why they dont then there are the ppl who have a problem that made them that way (.02%) ppl in america are lazy and like to eat its as simple as that and would rather have a surgery to get rid of the fat. pile on me all you want but i see it everyday this is expierience talking

Damn, Highballace.  I got tested for Marfan's (I have like 4 or 5 of the sympotms?) when I was 17 or 18.  Supposedly Abe Lincoln had it (really tall and lanky).  I know someone else who got diagnosed with it and basically had to give up sports.

I never see anyone as fat as Mangino over the age of like 60.

HighBallAce's picture
HighBallAce on 11 Aug 2012 - 12:53am #

Redstorm, you are correct. Abe Lincoln did have it. And they can do a chormosome test on you that will verify it if your worried about it. I was 6'4" in the 7th grade! They said I would easily hit 7 feet but I stopped at 6'4". I was very skinny all through high school and into college at like 195. Then in 2000 I got married and started gaining weight. When the really bad symptoms popped up, thats when I started getting upwards of 250. I wasn't allowed to play sports for my 7th grade year and I had to have a cardiac specialist say that I would be fine un til I got older which was the case. All the bad stuff happened almost on my 30th birthday. Ever sense, it's been hell, literal hell. I'm now 36 and the last 6 years haven't been good at all but I've got to live a really great life. I've done things people could only dream of so if I go out tommorow, I go out knowing I lived my life to it's fullest! Best of luck to you man!
