He couldn't let these guys play. He was probably trying to figure out a way to let it slide, but in the end there was just no chance in hell he could get away with it.
"You'll be proud of our young people in the classroom, in the community, and most especially in 310 days in Ann Arbor, Michigan on the football field."
Well, "just one game" is certainly enough to hurt the team, in the case of Toussaint. I'm guessing that we can beat Air Force (Sept. 8) and UMass (Sept. 14) with Taylor Lewan switched to tailback, and Denard Robinson playing left tackle. I hve zero level of surprise with this news, and I'm pretty happy that this was done and that this was the public face of our program.
Make no mistake; this is a very, very meaningful personnel loss for Michigan. This one hurts.
@BUCK-I.8 - Judging that he's improved as a passer, he should be taking off less, considering that Borges' is a West Coast guy. He'll probably be throwing more short passes and timing routes, and using his lethal running ability as more of a constraint to keep defenses honest, I'd imagine. Not to mention the fact that Fitz has emerged as a go-to back. Granted, their o-line's not great right now, so Robinson will probably be escaping collapsing pockets quite a lot, especially against 'Bama's vaunted d-line.
This will probably be where Fitz's loss hurts UM the most: Saban's probably going to rush five and spy Denard, daring him to throw. If Robinson can't establish the running game early, this will get real nasty real fast.
We did know about it; the cast-like bandage on his arm was undisguisable. But we were told that it was an ordinary wound problem that had been cleaned up. It was in fact a big deal, and from insider accounts, it was even worse that what Rothstein's article reports. A-r-m-p-u-n-t.
bucki_1033, why do you say that? Take off your scarlet classes and you'll see that probably wasn't the case. I don't especially like Hoke either but he has proven to hold players accountable and have integrity. Just a poor choice of loyalty for someone from the Buckeye state.
And urbzrenewal, I agree about Clark. Much more serious than Fitz and i bet hoke will sit him accordingly after the legal mumbo jumbo is set.
Just caught Desmond's comments about the punishment and his shot at Ohio State and Tatgate... maybe its just me, but I think driving drunk and breaking into someones house is, um, maybe a little more severe than selling your own stuff for tattoos... but perhaps Desmond just wanted to use the word 'ironic' in a poor context today
Good for Hoke. If Dunn's pot didn't turn out to be his Mom's (I can hardly say this with a straight face!) and if Storm had DV'd instead of disorderly conducted his girl, I'd fully expect UFM to do the same.
M Man: We hope that Denard remains healthy and is at full-strength come November and for the 2013 Insight Bowl.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but in addition to Bama's stellar starting front-4 on defense, they also have a second-string DE who is on the verge of going ballistic this year. He's not yet a household name, but be on the look-out for . . . Quinton Dial. He's dominated some of their scrimmages (against a highly touted, veteran OL) and when they do the silly unit-based 40-yard sprint races, the 6'6, 304 lb. Dial outraces all the other OL and DLmen by five yards.
On the other hand, Bama's LBs are inexperienced and I'm not sold on Vinnie Sunseri in the backfield. Bama lost two key DB backups already.
If Michigan can contain the Bama DL, they can expose other vulnerabilities in the Bama defense.
Quinton Dial is actually listed first on the two-deep that I have. Alabama has too many monsters to even keep track of.
Vinnie Sunseri's backup is Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, who we desperately wanted. Clinton-Dix could probably start for us. If Sunseri has won the job, he's got to be for real.
RaleBucki - RE: Will Campbell. If you can believe it (I can't), Campbell, all 315 lbs, was doing a kind of Dukes of Hazzard thing, trying to slide across the hood of a car and caved it in. Because of a supposed damage estimate, he was charged with some destruction-of-property amount that was more than a minor misdemeanor. But he eventually filed a guilty plea to something lesser. The legal equivalent of jaywalking or trespassing.
Roll Denard the heck out away fromt he Dline and where he can make palys with his feet. Without T running there is no ground game without giving Denard some space. He'll get killed by that D-Line if they try running and keeping him in the pocket.
M Man - I'll have to salute UM's integrity on this one. A hard choice. Btw, I would have thought Denard Robinson would then line up at guard, not tackle.

I would love for Michigan to be undefeated come November 24th and for us to ruin their NC dreams. I will not be rooting for Alabama this weekend and if this makes me a bad Ohio State fan then so be it.
Good job, Hoke. Tough decision to sit out your top RB for a game that you were already 14 point underdogs in, but for once, integrity wins out over winning/losing. I certainly remember what happened when Beanie couldn't play against USC in 2008. Not that him not playing was the sole reason OSU got stomped that day. Very similar situation here for TSUN against Alabama.
PHXBUCK, no, it doesn't make you a bad OSU fan to root for TSUN tomorrow, IMO. It's just a shame they couldn't both lose. I say that anytime TSUN plays ND, PSU, Wisconsin, or USC in a Rose Bowl.

Glad Hoke made the correct call, even though they could use Fitz.
Staff infections can be a son of a gun to clear up. I think I read that Fragel had a staff infection on his leg a couple of years ago that they originally thought was MRSA. Now MRSA is nasty, nasty stuff.
How many Michigan fans do you guys know that are overly confident that Mich will beat Bama? My buddy and brother (OSU and MSU fans, respectively) keep saying the same thing about how "Fitz will be our excuse." Do you need an excuse if you get beat by the defending national champs? Or if you just weren't the better team?
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

Hail-the TSUN fans that I know here in VA still have bad dreams about the RichRod years, so they are somewhat hesitant to do major chest thumping at this point. Not to mention, we are surrounded by EssEeeCee and Alabama fans who think that Michigan doesn't have a snowball's chance.
As to excuses, there can't be any for any losing team. Hard fought game, could have gone either way, the big MO, sure. Short of finding out that the officials were bribed by boosters of the other team, bookies, the whole team is suffering from food poisoning, or the team was decimated by a rampaging Godzilla, a loss is a loss, no excuse. Any whiny excuses only cheapen their team's effort. That goes for any competition.
Looks like just the one game though. I would hope Clark gets more, at least
I would agree. Fitz I'm fine with one game, Clark...
He couldn't let these guys play. He was probably trying to figure out a way to let it slide, but in the end there was just no chance in hell he could get away with it.

More carries for Denard then? I'll take that! More hits till THE GAME..
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
Denard went through last year without any major injuries. What are the odds that he manages that miracle again?

Buck-I.8;
Denard did have a very poorly-reported injury last year; a nagging (and pretty serious) staph infection in his throwing arm:

I don't think Will Cambell was ever held accountable. Not the worst crime in the world but he was initially chaged with a felony I believe.
Good for Hoke. If Dunn's pot didn't turn out to be his Mom's (I can hardly say this with a straight face!) and if Storm had DV'd instead of disorderly conducted his girl, I'd fully expect UFM to do the same.
Bucktoooooooth, heeyaw.
@M Man Yeah, I think Taylor Martinez had the same problem.

Right decision by Hoke, but pretty much dooms Michigan. The Fitz/Denard combo gave them a puncher's chance. I just don't see it happening anymore.
I think I read that Bamas #3 and #4 Lbs last year combined for 11 TsFL. I don't think they know what personnel problems even are
^Yeah but that seems to be 'Bama's strategy. They get 3 space eaters up front, and have their 4 linebackers make all the tackles.
I don't think you understood my point. Depth won't be an issue

Cheers to Hoke.
A good OSU fan hopes OSU gets the chance to whoop on a top ranked UM in the last game of the season.
Guess they need a excuse when alabama smashes them tomorrow night.
Glad Hoke made the correct call, even though they could use Fitz.
