yes id rather have booker garret and mcmillian and he was urb's option d or e but it's just annoying seeing top ohio guys going to scum bec it rarely or almost never happened under tress but in urb i trust

Good luck to the kid. On to the next one...

Here we go again. This would have never happened under tress. I dont like what meyer is doing.
Damn.
@Bucksanity
Ferns wouldnt be a buckeye under Tress either, he doesn't want to go to a big city like columbus.
Him going to UM was already known too.
Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens
The kid visited Ohio State and subsequently decided it was not for him, which is fine, considering the LB talent in 2014. Who cares if he goes to UM? It's his choice, and even under Tress it probably would've happened. Some kids just don't like some schools; he said he wanted a smaller town feel, which UM, PSU, and ND indeed provide (better than OSU at least). Sorry, but I trust Coach Meyer and his vision to recruit better talent nationally (McMillan/Garrett)
Edit: exactly @BJMullens.
@ BJMOver Ann Arbor is just as big as columbus, maybe a llittle smaller but I get your point it doesn't matter who the coach is he wasnt gonna pick tOSU
Ann Arbor is nowhere near the size of Columbus.
So I Googled it :)
27.7 sq miles (71.74 km²)
Ann Arbor, Area
212.6 sq miles (550.6 km²)
Columbus, Area
So roughly 7.5 times bigger.
Ann Arbor definitely doesn't have the "big city feel" like Columbus does. I can see how that atmosphere can be a deal breaker for some recruits. To each his own. He was never going to be a Buckeye so lets just worry about the guys that Urban is actually targeting.
"Love my State, hate the football"
Ann Arbor: 113,934
Columbus: 787,033 (US Census, 2010)
Yes, anything less than 7 times the size of Ann Arbor is about the same size as Ann Arbor. SMH
With Penn State imploding, I expect every great Ohio player not snatched up by Ohio State to be going to Michigan and to a lesser extent Michigan State over the next 5-10 years.
Get used to it, as Danny Hope is fond of saying. We can't get every player. We had five (?) LBs commit in 2011 and might already have three in the fold for 2013. Michigan has gotten top guys from Ohio before. Justin Turner turned out to be a big fat bust, but he was the #1 player in Ohio right when Ohio State was making title appearances and Michigan was imploding, and he still went up north. So yes, stuff like this happened under Tress too.
The North remembers.
You don't get much more wrong than a multiple of 7. I can totally get why he wouldn't want to be in a big city, coming from rural Ohio. He picked one of the best schools in the nation academically, close-ish to where he grew up, and where he can play for a quality (sometimes) football program.
Ann Arbor is great, but he also wasn't getting much love or an offer yet from OSU. Ferns is the top LB recrit probably for SCUM next year while we are talking about the top 3 LB's in the country committed to OSU. I can't imagine him feeling much love yet and that strokes the ego. I bet UM loved him something good when he went.
okay so i was wrong about the sizes but ive been to Ann Arbor and it feels big same as columbus but maybe because I'm a small town guy and they both feel huge to me. By the way srry BJM over
@Steensn, Im pretty sure Ferns had an offer from us and Urban was recruiting him pretty actively
Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens
He is listed as having an offer, and was a guy that Urban would've liked to have, presumably
the kids not all there, has made some weird posts on twitter. if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, probably is a duck. let ttun have him we have booker, garrett, kwon etc. on the table
Hey let's maybe not trash the Ohio kids just because they didn't all want to go to OSU. Believe it or not, there are other reasons to pick a school than football
just tellin it like it is. good luck to him.
Ferns just doesn't like OSU. No fault to him and Michigan is the next best option for a high caliber player if they don't want to go to OSU.
For whoever said this wouldn't of happened under Tressel: we lost many top rated Ohio players under him, most notably in recent years DePreist, Hicks, Anderson, Walker and countless others. Some Ohio players just don't bleed scarlet and gray and thats okay. We'll get talent regardless.
Ferns was never going to come here, regardless of our coach. He is not a buckeye.
I'm getting sick of your trolling shit BUCKSANITY68... find somewhere else for that
Cause I couldn't go for three
Just because bucksanity isn't down on his knees in front of OSU all the time doesn't mean he is "trolling". Take a chill pill
"Love my State, hate the football"
Not trolling, just unnecessary negativity about Urban's recruiting. I don't think we should praise him OR condemn him before he's even given a chance, so lets cut out both extremes.
We'll all see soon in less than 22 days...I for one am a believer due to his success elsewhere. Not to mention he's a born and bread Buckeye! Used to carry a buckeye in his pocket at while coaching at FL. No reason for any doubt IMO of course. "Btw...before there's any back lash...I don't mean this towards anyone comments on this board."
I may change my Woody quote to this above... ;-)
"There's nothing that cleanses your soul like getting the hell kicked out of you."
"I love football. I think it is most wonderful game in world and I despise to lose."
Woody Hayes 1913 - 1987
We'll see in about 2-3 years if all the hype around Meyer turns into reality..or just, hype. A lot of things have to come into place to win national championships..as we all know, considering we have 1 in how many years?
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
I think if anyone straight expects national championships, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Sure, he knows how to do it, but will he? Who knows. It's ridiculous to say that one coach will surely and suddenly make one team better than 120-plus other teams and be able to show it on the field every saturday. I think there's a chance it could happen, but to count on it is downright emotionally irresponsible.
The guy Rampage speaks of could very well be a troll. Click his name and look at what he comments on it is basically all ttun items. Looks like it is more than possible. I have watched CSI reruns many times.
myself, i cant question urban and his recruiting. he has two titles, and he had to go thru the mighty SEC conference to do so. cant question jt either, he had a great run in the weaker big 10, with one national title himself. in urban i trust. so a couple of ohio kids go to the place up north, so what. ohio isnt the only state that produces great talent. urb knows what he is doing.
After the load of LB's we got in 2012, (possibly Mitchell) in 2013, and the possibility of kids we could get in 2014... I don't think 1 kid is going to kill us. Now if Meyer starts missing on a lot of Ohio talent there might be a problem, but if he can pull kids out of the south and west I don't think there is going to be an issue.
Lougroza nailed it... all bucksanity ever posts is how tsun is outrecruiting us and is going to turn the rivalry in their favor and there is nothing we can do about it... it is all negativity all the time from him... just tired of it
Cause I couldn't go for three
It's amazing how great Meyer is at recruiting. We won't even consider a top 100 player nationally from our own state. Rumor is that urban will only offer scholarships to five star Recruits. He might offer a four star recruit a Scholarship, but if the kid agrees to accept Meyer will tell him that it wasn't a real offer. That makes a lot of sense. Offer kids scholarships, but don't honor them. That Brady Hoke doesn't know what hes doing. There isn't one recruit from 2012 or 2013 classes at scum that is good enough for OSU.
Bucknutlover: I hope you're being sarcastic. Ferns was an OSU target but wasn't interested.
"Attack the Strong, Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead!"
-Former OSU S&C Coach Lichter
I'm almost positive all of that was him being facetious
Hey, good luck to him. He's got a chance for a great education and to make an impact at a top 10 all time program.
Urban getting outworked AGAIN in Ohio. WTF is going on? Face it; these are the kids who just might beat us in the future. I have faith in the staff, but I also feel a Cooper-ish at the same time.
DePriest & Hicks left the state but didn't go to Michigan. Now that Michigan has legit coaches, they will go toe-to-toe against Urban in our home state. Sorry, but I miss the way Tressel locked down our state. Maybe I'll cool off tomorrow, but right now it's looking really, really bad.
ONCE AGAIN Tressel wouldnt have gotten Ferns either..... kinda getting annoying
Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens
How is this getting outworked? Is Urban supposed to relocate OSU to a smaller city?
Guess I got bad info...
Hate to break it to the young grasshopper but if Ferns wants to play in the NFL, guess where he's probably going to live.....IN A BIG FREAKIN CITY!!!!
"I'm One Bad Buckeye, and I approve this message."
Not necessarily. He'll probably live in the suburbs during the season, and just practice/play in cities. He can still live in Montana or something in the offseason if he wants.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
Anybody realize that Booker, Garrett, and McMillan could all commit to OSU? Who cares about Ferns? Id take any of those over him.
^^ Sorry, but I gotta call BS on this. Yeah, we COULD get all the best prospects, but it's ridiculous to just say "who cares" about an elite player going to our biggest rival.
What I am saying Rampage is it's another teams fan posing as a fan of our team posting here in order to incite riots and such. I could be wrong but no fan of OSU would continually post what he has posted. If you read it and look at it from that standpoint it seems fairly clear. Again CSI reruns watched regularly. I am beginning to think this is becoming a regular thing. All the ttun votes in the polls says alot.
is this fern kid, the best linebacker in the country?
I agree with the sentiment that Tressel would have gotten a kid like Ferns. He had a knack for impressing upon young people the importance of pride in one's home state and, thus, pride in the state school; pride in being a Buckeye. Word spread about Ben Gedeon being turned off by Urban Meyer's business-like approach and that Michigan felt like family. We used to feel like family, under Tressel.
Now, maybe this new business-like approach will work out. Maybe we'll get faster, more talented players and contend for national titles in the long run. And maybe it won't. There's no guarantee that we're going to get McMillan, Booker, AND Garrett. In fact, the odds are relatively slim that this will happen.
There's just something about the pride in the state of Ohio that Jim Tressel instilled and I fear it will never come back. We haven't see the product yet on the field, but people should acknowledge the distinct possibility that Urban Meyer just isn't a good fit for this state and this university. We'll see. But I and many others aren't drinking the Kool-Aid just yet. I hate seeing talent from Ohio go North.
2002grad, how can you say the odds are slim when you consider their behavior? All 3 of them have shown far more interest in OSU than anywhere else.
The family like atmosphere that Tress exuded also helped to maintain the walrus (Bollman) and a video coordinator as our QB coach through mediocrity. He could never come down hard publicly on anyone for poor performance and would always seem to favor upper classmen even if they were lesser players than their underling at times. Do not get me wrong. Tress was a GREAT man and coach but to see all of his coaching and belief traits as the only way would be stretching it. Meyer does it right. Do it right or you will not do it here. For players and coaches alike. And if an Ohio recruit is #4 or 5 on the list and goes elsewhere, great, #1, 2, & 3 are the ones I want on our team.
Are we really flipping out at each other over a kid who is 20ish months away from signing a NLOI? A kid who by most accounts is a good kid who just chose not to go to OSU? I mean OSU has taken the top kid in Penn the last what...5 years? OSU can recruit Ohio, take half the top 10 kids in the state, and 2-3 others, then almost cherry pick from top players in other states. Yes, Tressel took a lot of Ohio kids, but also pulled in kids from across the country too
The only time Tress truly "put a fence around Ohio" was when Rich Rod was coach. And Rich Rod bungled everything. Even if Tress was still coach, Hoke would be getting some Ohio kids.
I'm confused on the whole "in Urban we trust" stuff. Ohio State offered Ferns a scholarship, it's not like Urban turned this kid down.
Crable from Massillon! Just an example of a great Ohio LB to scUM!
Wherever you are, there you be!
here's the difference between ohio state recruiting and michigan recruiting. we vet out our prospects in person and michigan offers them in advance. urban even said we got burned in the 2013 class by kids saying they wouldn't camp with us because they have offers elsewhere and they don't want to waste their time if they don't have an offer.
now, i realize ferns had an offer. different story. but if we are going to blow this one prospect out of proportion i thought it was worth stating. urban finds value and the commits we have are SOLID. michigan? "throw em a schollie hopefully 50% of them will work out"
Why would it matter to you who we trust in if you are a hoke groupie? OSU offered Ferns as well as the top 3 in the country who are reportedly leaning the correct way. Had Ferns committed he would have been on the outside looking in as #4. He will be #1 at ttun.
@ITSMICHIGANFERGODSSAKES - I think the point that people here are trying to convey is that it's been pretty blatantly apparent that Ferns wasn't in OSU's top three at the LB position. Clifton Garrett, Dante Booker, and Raekwon (The Chef) McMillian are all higher priorities for the staff. In fact, I'm pretty sure that Ferns listed that as a reason that he was no longer considering OSU for his services. Penn State, Notre Dame, and Ann Arbor all have that "small town" kind of feel that a guy from Saint Clairsville (population: ~5000) can relate to (though, ironically, most people from the Ohio Valley wind up migrating to or around Columbus).
It sucks to see the guy go, since I'm sure that he was probably the next guy in if any of our top three commit elsewhere (hence the offer); but I'm not nearly as bummed to be missing out on Ferns than I would be missing out on any of the three above him on our list. He wanted to make his decision early, and could see that he wasn't OSU's top priority. I can't blame him for having zero interest after going to other top programs (UM and ND) and being told that he was their top priority LB. Good luck to the guy, I hope he tears it up every game--well, except one haha.
I just read a forum topic about guys being negative and after reading this thread I get it. Guys, calm down, think of it this way would you rather have: Garrett, McMillian, and Booker or subsititute any of those for Ferns. Under Tressel we locked down every Ohio kid that we wanted, but still some would go to Michigan and yet we only won ONE national title (which some could argue was won with all of Coop's recruits). Trust in Urban, give him a chance, he won with his recruits, he knows what it takes to get it done. So we lost "ferns" (I mean what kind of football name is that, lol) to scUM not a big deal.
@HC
Channing Stribbling and C'sonte York. Both earned their offers by performing well at camp in front of Michigan coaches.
I can assure you that Michigan and OSU's recruiting strategies are quite comparable, though, their needs may differ substantially. I'm not an Xs and Os kind of guy by any means, I'm just a fan, but different body styled and different minded players will be used accordingly in the offense/defense ran by the team they play on. I'm not just talking about spread vs pro style, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but there can be countless variations to a base offense/defense based on play calling tendencies and scheme. All schools will evaluate talent based on film, attending games, and camps.
Where they are different...Urban puts out so-called "Non-committable" offers for the plan B and C (further evaluation needed) guys. If Michigan offers a kid, that kid can accept it immediately. If they wait, there's a risk that their spot could be taken. It's just more black and white; you have one or you don't.
As far as just throwing offers out...per 247sports, OSU is at 120 and Michigan is at 122 offers for 2012.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
~Bo Schembechler
Has it gotten this bad to where we're arguing about kids that haven't even played their junior year in high school yet? My god people get a grip!
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
@Jason
It's all about the rankings that nobody care about and the state the kid lives in...those dictate whether or not a kid is good /S/
Anyway, for those discussing Ohio kids going to Michigan and Tressel vs Urban [and Hoke, indirectly], found this from another poster at TOS:
Obviously, there are several other factors besides simply has a Michigan/OSU offer, but I think the point is clear.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
~Bo Schembechler
@hail how many of those 120 osu offers are commitable? :D
osu's premier recruiting event - friday night lights
michigan's premier recruiting event - a barbecue

I say it's slim that Ohio State will land all 3 of Booker, McMillan, and Garrett because the chances are, indeed slim. Michigan State leads for Garrett. We are, at best, in a tie with Georgia for McMillan.
If you're saying that we are in better shape without Ferns, you are wrong. The kid is a baller. Gedeon is a baller. McCray is a baller. Losing those kids to Michigan HURTS. And it wouldn't have happened under Tressel. Believe that.
Bosa/Charlton is what is needed here and those who follow Alex understand. Also Urban is just getting his ass molded to his chair. He has done what he has completely on the fly. Do not think anyone could have pulled off what he has without ever coaching a game and with a one year bowl ban. Think about it. The years to come will prove the value of having time to build relationships with recruits. It will only get better if you can believe it.
@HAIL - HCASUALCC does have a point here. There's no denying Hoke's success, but those aforementioned numbers are partially buttressed by the fact that Meyer spits offers at a rate exponentially higher than that of Tressel. Tressel's offers were instantly committable, and subsequentially didn't go out in the same volume as Meyer's do. Of those eight players mentioned, I only think that Smith and Thomas really had committable offers (and McCray was offered so late in the game he was definitely a plan B, not to mention how behind we were on Thomas when Meyer got in), and Kalis was a decommit that happened under Fickell after Tressel's ouster.
OSU definitely isn't for everyone. I loved my time at OSU. But if I had a dime for everyone who looked at me when I told them that I went to OSU and they said, "but how did you survive there, it's such a big school, I would be lost!", I would be quite wealthy. If he didn't get the right vibe from the campus and surroundings, he didn't. If he isn't the type who would feel comfortable with Urban's style of coaching, then so be it. There are a number of schools that I would never have felt comfortable at-maybe OSU was one of his. Ehh. Urban does not seem to be a cuddly kind of guy. Nor does he seem to be your buddy or your father figure. But if you want to compete at the very highest levels with a passionate, driven, direct, no BS staff, then you will end up being quite happy at OSU, love your coaches, your school, and your teammates, and bleed scarlet and grey.
The point I was trying to make is it doesn't make any sense to say, "I'll trust Urban's opinion on this one.".
It seems like Urbans opinion was to offer one of the better LB in the Midwest. He didn't land him, thats okay with your guys depth. I'm just saying if you don't get a player that you offered it just seems odd to play it off that he didn't want him.
Well, technically his opinion was to slow-play him and to not show him the same kind of attention that he was giving to McMillan, Garrett, and Booker. That opinion (to slow-play and put him on the backburner) is the opinion we're referring to, hence the "In Urban We Trust" comments. This seems like a similar situation to Mike McCray, except that Ferns is a better prospect; he just had the unfortunate circumastance (in OSU's case) of being in a class chock-full of highly rated LBs (who all happen to show interest in our program).
For what it's worth, I think that if OSU played this the same way as Michigan (i.e. rolling out the red carpet, telling him he's high on their boards, etc.), this is a lot closer battle. I'm not saying that Meyer would win, but we'd be in the running. Comments like the size of the city or campus tend to be rationalizations that people make to reinforce their decision (or to distract from the truth that they felt spurned by another program). For example, Taylor Decker told Alex (in one of his "Catching Up With..." sections) that he had no interest in OSU, and that Notre Dame's campus was the perfect size and had a "small town feel." Granted, OSU hired both his position coach and the guy who recruited him (Warinner and Hinton, respectively), but he flipped his committment regardless.
This is not good. Everyone needs to stop sugarcoating. scUM is coming for us. Which is somthing nobody here has dealt with when it comes to recruiting. No one is a lock anymore from Ohio and everybody knows it will be hard for urban to get players from Michigan. If we lose out on top players across the country. Then we wont have elite talent to fill these spots if something goes wrong, bc scUM is picking our pockets in state. Some of you guys are in denial.
I dont think people are being too negative. It has been a long time since we lost top talent from Ohio. Tress won with that talent. Meyer has a different strategy and that is ok if it scares people until it has proven to work.
OK, do not know if anyone else gets the fact that this dude is 100% troll. No real fan would post all pro scUM garbage. This is a scUM fan poser.
@BUCKSANITY68 - I'll start freaking out when Hoke starts taking our "Plan As", like Booker or Snodgrass. I think about the only in-state guy that Hoke and Meyer were both actively going after was DeVeon Smith, who we were looking to get after Ezekial Ellliot committed. Sorry, but Hoke taking the #4 guy on our LB board just doesn't concern me. When Hoke starts landing the Burrows-es, the Marshalls, and the Bookers and James-es of our classes, then I'll be concerned. But right now, I have yet to see a top in-state Meyer priority go to Hoke--which, to be fair, is because we're recruiting mainly different guys.
Yes, Michigan landed the #4 player in the state. We're sitting pretty at the top of the #1 player's list. Michigan has always picked our pockets in-state, a lot of their best players hail from our borders (a fact I'm weirdly proud of). They're an elite program in a state devoid of elite high school talent, of course they're going to get guys here. Along with Illinois, we're their most fertile recruiting ground. Sure, things stopped during the RichRod debacle, but that's because they weren't contending. Hoke is, and has optomism. Of course that'll sell. So will Urban Meyer's football factory. It's both ironic and perfect (from a marketing prospective) that Hoke is much more "folksy" and "family-friendly" than Meyer, it creates a unique selling point to Meyer's (percieved) "machine" in Columbus. People will buy into that, and that's okay. As long as we've (mainly) got pick-of-the-litter in our home state, I'm more than okay with that. I don't see that changing.
The Hoke vs. Meyer recruiting wars will come down to the records this season and next. If Michigan goes 7-5 or 8-4 in either of the next two years, his momentum will disappear and his classes will start dropping. Now, I'm not saying Hoke is not a great recruiter, because he is. But Meyer has the built in capital with his two rings. If Michigan goes 11-1 each of the next two seasons and beats Meyer, his recruiting stock will fly through the roof and Michigan will likely dominate the next decade. This is just an interesting period in the rivalry because we have two new guys (Hoke is still new as far as being the head coach in the rivalry is concerned) who are jockeying for position. If Meyer beats Hoke, you'll hear considerably less complaints about any Ohio kids going north.
And let's be honest, the Ohio kids who have gone north so far aren't exactly Woodson or Howard. There are only two that I considered fantastic players: Thomas and Kalis. The others are all nice players, but not anyone I consider a game changer. In a shorter time period, Meyer has done the following:
Bosa > Charlton
Washington > Strobel
Dunn, Elliott > Smith
Spence > Wormley
Perry > McCray
Marcus > Gedeon
Perkins > Ferns
Burrows, Woodard > Conley
And even then, from what we've seen out of Decker, I'm almost ready to say Decker > Kalis. The Thomas one bothers me because the former staff should have been all over him. Hopefully, though, I'll be able to say Bell > Thomas.
@JADAMS - Ferns is probably a better "prospect" than Perkins, but Perkins is the better athlete. Kalis was a five star for a reason, too. Granted, on-the-field results will always tell the tale here. Otherwise, amen.
Good luck (like on the Movie Taken). I've said this time and time again...this is the one thing I'm not a big fan of. I trust UFM...that's not my point before I say this. I'm just not a big fan of kids from Ohio going to tTUN. However, I do think this could come back to haunt us like some from Ohio have done at that school up north (two heisman winners that to some from up north don't seem to thinks a big deal...I do however and when skilled players like that come from Ohio...it's saying something about that state they played HS football in and what Ohio produces). I can see this happening again...Dymonte Thomas but not Fern. He's good but there are others in 2014 that are MUCH better LBs. Good luck to Fern...good luck indeed. Ben Gideon will start before him anyway...another Ohio kid...
OSU can't get em all but 19 kids going to tTUN in 3 years so far isn't a good thing IMO
"There's nothing that cleanses your soul like getting the hell kicked out of you."
"I love football. I think it is most wonderful game in world and I despise to lose."
Woody Hayes 1913 - 1987
@HODGE - That's the closest one in my mind. Ferns will be considered a slightly better player fundamentally coming out of high school, but Perkins is a freak athlete. In those cases I go with the athleticism because I believe Fickell can coach LBs as well as anyone and Urban will put the kid in position to best use his freakish abilities. And that Kalis flip still hurts, especially when looking at Michigan's OL success and our misses.
I hate when we try and rationalize a recruiting loss. We lost Ferns to Michigan. Whether it was because we didn't roll the red carpet out or not is irrelevant. We should have. And that's the problem right now.
OSU2002GRAD -
Why should we have roled out the red carpet for Ferns? Should we role out the red carpet to every Ohio kid who can potentially get an offer?
@OSU2002 - Why? We're in good position for 4 LBs (McMillan, James, Booker, and Garrett), that the staff obviously sees as better options (with the exception of James, who doesn't yet hold an offer) than Ferns. If that's their error, then so be it, but it would seem--at least--that they see three other interested guys with better potential. That's not rationalization, that's fact.
Ferns just didn't like the big city feel Ohio state has. It had nothing to do with Urban not rolling out the red carpet for him. If he was Urbans number 1 LB target we still would not have landed him. It's a great get for Michigan and hurts that he's from Ohio but believe it or not there are kids that live in Ohio that don't want to go to OSU
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
FERNS HAD AN OHIO STATE OFFER! If that fact is a bit confusing to some of you, then that is Urban's fault because of this silly committable/non-committable nonsense.
If you have four top linebackers on your board, you go after all 4, hoping you can get 3 of them. If you hedge your bets, you could wind up striking out on all of them. And Ferns isn't some Plan B guy. I assure you of that.
OSU2002 -
I would actually argue that he is plan B. We can't take 4 LBs due to our reduced scholarships next year and Plan A is definitely McMillan, Booker, Garrett. And yes he does have an offer, but so does Chris Worley and I don't see the staff roling out the red carpet for him.
@OSU2002 - Okay, I'll recant. He wasn't "Plan B", but he was still behind three other guys, all of which also hold offers. I don't blame the guy for digging Michigan's pitch of "You're number one on our board"; Hell, I'd commit there too if I felt that they wanted me that much more, they're still a top program. If anything, I give Urban props for not lying to the kid, it's pretty obvious that our top recruit is McMillan (he's said as much), followed by Booker and Garrett.
This is a great get for the Wolverines, but I think that any of McMillan, Booker, and Garrett will be better wins on signing day. You can't judge these guys as players until their carreers are complete.
How many LBs are you taking? 2? So if you get Garrett, which is the most likely, IMO, but miss on McMillan and Booker and your other LB is < Ferns, is that okay?
Bird in the hand...
Might be a moot point anyway, as Ferns seemed to have little interest in OSU, regardless.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
~Bo Schembechler
@HAIL - McMillan has us tied with UGA at #1, Booker has us as his #1 (and will probably be our first 2014 recruit), we're tied at #1 with Garrett with MSU (might be 1B there), and DaVonte James is awaiting an offer (#2 ranked player in OH, according to 247). I get what you're saying about bird in hand, but we're sitting awfully pretty with the top LBs on our board.
We'll probably take 2-3 this class, 4 tops.
And to back up Hodges point, our LB class in 2012 was amazing, our 2013 class with Mitchell and Lewis (granted if we land both), Shazier being only a sophmore, Grant being only a sophmore, I highly doubt we are "hurting" at linebacker in that ONE LB doesn't commit to us. Kind of funny we are all debating this one one guy named "Ferns" LOL
@Hodge, yeah I meant Booker. I think McMillan ends up south and Garret seems to be more open. Just my opinion and of course I hope you don't get all 3.
@Jason
Yes, we're both very plentiful at LB. I'm happy to continue adding to the stock though.
It's just a sign that we're still 3 weeks and 1 day away from opening kick...at least you guys only have to wait until noon.

@HAIL - I think that those three played a large role in Urban's LB board, especially with the rumour of the whole "Dream Team" for the '14 class. There seems to be some momentum for said idea, but we'll see if it comes to fruition. Gotta think that if we land McMillan (who, admittedly, isn't publicly announcing till the Under Armour game his Senior season), chances of all three dropping (with Booker a near-lock) are pretty good.
If only it was that easy, LOL. Ty Isaac was a Michigan "lock" to 95% of Wolverines and he bailed in what seemed like a weekend. Different, but there are guys like Diggs.
Obviously, the only fact we know is that you're sitting pretty with them. We could look into our crystal balls all day and go back in forth. I just want Jabril Peppers, Malik McDowell and Damon Webb...oh, and I'd like Hoke to pull out a miracle with Byrne so we can have this debate all over again :)

@HAIL - What do you feel Michigan's chances with Webb, McDowell, and Peppers are? From where I sit, I think Webb may end up being the hardest to land as he is already getting serious attention from national powers. My gut says he may head south, but then again it's just my gut.
If the Big 3 wants to commit, you don't deny any of them. We wouldn't take two and stop at that.
The hand-wringing is ridiculous. Urb will get most of the top OH guys he wants. He will not get them all. Hoke likes recruiting oh. That is what it is.
As someone else said, urb hasn't coached one game and has a chance to get 4 out of the top 5 players in Ohio for 2014.
Please knock it off.
man i did not mean to start a huge argument abt urb vs tress justs haring info and my opinion, as i said in my op he was the 4th (at best) option at lb in 14 so its not a killer blow, woud tress have gotten him prob not w/ the big city/ small town thing but would tress have osu at number 1 or tied for number w/ the top 3 lb's in the country prob not the only guys mich has gotten from ohio im truly 'salty/butthurt' about are kalis, nothing we could do their un less urban was hired way earlier lol, and dymonte thomas, a stark county kid who ive seen playa bunch and he's a baller. i honestly think the big 3 thing is picking up momentum and i'd be shocke if we don't land 2 of the big 3 maaking ferns an after thought id also take james over him too as most sites have ferns 3rd best lb in ohio behind booker and james

Holy hell some of you need to step off the ledge and stop following recruiting if you are going to get this worked up over one recruit
"You're pissed because we went after a committed guy? Guess what, we got 9 guys who better go do it again," said Meyer. "Do it a little harder next time."
^^ right. I can't even read these threads anymore, people saying that his jersey should be urinated on, etc. We all like it a lot, but maybe some of us should step back and remember that in the grand scheme, it's only a game.
what's worse is the delusional think upnorth get a load of this

Hammond, they act like they have really done something. They think they are going to lock down our state? All the guys they are talking about were guys down on our list but they insist on pretending that we wanted all the Ohio guys they have signed. What a joke. And they revert to talking about us cheating over and over. Why I cannot stand a scUM fan. Have never been around one that did not talk this same exact way. Do not understand the superiority complex.
as someone who has lived behind enemy lines I know that. even though they've been extremly quite 9 of the last 11 years. but Webb is the biggest fountain of misinformation out there. & weintraub he's partner is just a bitter little no talent troll.
