who represents BIG10 in Rose Bowl?

Even though I think Ohio State beats them in late November, it's got to be Mishigen.  Right?  Anyone else seeing any other team winning the conference?  Wisky and Sparty lost their QB's, while Nebraska and Illinois have good talent, but really erratic QB's.

Wisconsin.  Should have one of the conference's better defenses, and even without Wilson that offense is going to be lethal.  Another massive offensive line, Ball, and another transfer QB who should grealy benefit from their gimmick offense and elite line play.

OK, I'll play.

I agree with Conroy on Wisconsin.

I could see MSU, assuming their offense can muster something.

I would agree those a$$holes will most likely go to the Rose Bowl.  However, I don't see USC being there, I fully expect them to be playing on a bigger stage after the first of the year.  The PAC 12 spot will open up to an at large selection I believe.

It wouldn't suprise me if Michigan makes it to the rose bowl, but if they're playing USC, they're in some trouble. If USC was giving 9.5 I would still take USC. I dislike both teams as much as the next OSU fan, but USC roster is like reading a preseason all-american team.

Meeeshigan. Mattison's D get's the best of Chip Kelly's "blur" offense just enough times to win a shootout.  Robinson is named offensive MVP.

No chance Michigan stops the Barkley to Woods connection, and their DLine would need a miracle to stop most run games this year. Sounds like a recipe for disaster

@BREWSTER - My sentiments exactly.  I feel gross pulling for USC, but damnit, I'm tired of the SEC.

I'm praying that I can one day see Urban Meyer v. Mike Leach in a National Semifinal one of these days, though.  That would be such a fun matchup; spread-to-run vs. airraid.  Chris Brown's head would explode.

Wisconsin's year after year of pathetic recruiting classes is going to hurt them eventually.  Their running game should be tops, but there is no way that lightning strikes twice with their QB situation.  Plus, their OC is gone.  And their defense is suspect, particularly against the pass.  Whoever brings the best pass rush to the table from the Legends division is going to the Rose Bowl.  That will either be Michigan State or scUM.  It'd be cool to see Sparty there.  However, Purdue is a sleeper coming out of the Leaders, so keep an eye on them to make it to the B1G title game.

As an aside, how nauseating will it be for us to have to watch Wisconsin (and probably an inferior Wisconsin out of the last 3) in the Rose Bowl for the 3rd straight year after losing the last 2?  I would much rather see Sparty out there for a change.

BrewstersMillions's picture
BrewstersMillions on 19 Jul 2012 - 2:59pm #

Huh? Suspect? Based off of what? Nothing in Wisconsin's game says this year's D will be suspect-they return 5 (by my estimation based on a quick glance of the 2011 Depth Chart) from a unit that had the 4th best passing D in the nation. They did all of this while leading by a lot in most games, so teams were throwing on Wisconsin out of necessity to the tune of 25 times per game

I'm not a fan of Bret Bielema by any stretch but the dude gets the most out of his talent. He wins with a system so he doesn't necessarily need a crop of 5 star players to get his usual 8-10 wins per.

Now I do know they'll take a step back at QB and I'm with you on the OC thing but opposing fans have every reason to legitimately fear Wisconsin-they are a damned good football team.

Oh yeah I am serious bro. Scum hands down has the best chance to represent the BIG10 in Cali and USC will represent the PAC12. Scum will win the Rose Bowl by 10 points. I think I disslike Lane Kiffin more than Scum. He is a sleeve ball that cannot coach. Scum will prevail.

I think Wisconsin's pass defense stats are completely misleading, Brewster.  Statistically you're right, but the B1G was AWFUL in passing last year.  Only 3 B1G QBs were in the top-half in the nation in passing, and Wisconsin's was one of them.  The other 2 were Iowa's James Vandenberg (whom Wisconsin did not play), and Kirk Cousins, who averaged 285 yards and 3 TDs in his 2 games against Wisconsin.  The only other QBs in the top 40 that Wisconsin played were Oregon State's Sean Mannion, whose struggles in getting to 244 yards were only because of his running game's measily 23, and Oregon's Darron Thomas, who TORCHED Wisconsin.

They were 47th against the run.  If you brought any degree of a running game against Wisconsin, you were going to have a good chance through the air, because they often didn't know what to do, particularly on deep passes.  Good thing for them, the B1G pretty much sucked at that, too.  Michigan State, Ohio State, and Oregon all essentially had their way with Wisconsin because they actually don't have the talent to compete.

So, you're right.  I should have said that they were suspect particularly against the run.  The pass defense was exposed when that happened.

I'm not afraid of them.  I wasn't really afraid of them last year.  I thought our big boys up front were going to handle their running game to an extent, and I thought our offense had a really good chance at swiss cheesing their defense (particularly after seeing how UNLV moved the football on them).

I could easily see a rematch between Wisky and MSU again this year. The next most likely opponent for Wisky in the BT CG is the winner of the end-of-regular-season Nebraska at Iowa game.

Michigan will go 7-5 and finish 4th in their division.

Yes, Wisky's defense is suspect, but no more so than Michigan's. Wisky will still have the best offense in the league and, after Ohio State, have less competition in their division (whatever's its called).

In the west division, MSU will have an excellent defense and good running game; Nebraska will be solid; Iowa has the easiest schedule in the division. And, sure, Michigan has an okay chance to win that division, too.

Playing the odds, then, I'd put my money on the team that is maybe 60-70 percent likely to advance out of its own division (Wisky) than try to pick the one team out of four contenders in the other division - even if I liked a team slightly better overall than Wisky - but which is only 25-30 percent likely to win its own division. I'm a numbers guy, though.

" all essentially had their way with Wisconsin because they actually don't have the talent to compete"

That's really the jist of it. I won't argue that Wisconsin fields the most talented teams in the B1G. Heck, most years they finish ahead of more physically gifted teams. Their system compensates for a lack of top end talent. With that said, they can (and have) beaten vastly superior teams since the Big Baby has taken over. Their style always worries me, and will continue to worry me, even as Meyer loads Ohio State with talent at every position.

Especially in the trailer park that is Camp Randall, its always a tough out up there.

Iowa has tough road games at Michigan and at Michigan St.  Nebraska and PSU at home.

MSU has to play at Michigan and at Wisconsin.  Home vs Boise St. Notre Dame, OSU, Iowa, and Nebraska

Nebraska has Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State at home, but has to go on the road against Northwestern, Iowa, Ohio St. and Michigan State

Michigan plays Sparty and Iowa at home and travels to Bama, ND, Nebraska, and OSU

Nebraska easily has the most difficult conference schedule, followed by Michigan, Michigan State, and, lastly, with the easiest schedule, Iowa.  However, I think that from a talent standpoint Michigan and MSU are the two best teams and you have to give Michigan the advantage with the experience and the fact that they have MSU at home.  Nebraska is third best and Iowa takes the rear.

I think Michigan advances to the B1GCG by beating MSU and Iowa at home, and even if they lose to both Neb and OSU on the road I think Nebraska loses at least 3 conference games, with Iowa, MSU and Michigan each losing 2.  Michigan will advance via the head to head tie breaker.

Wisconsin has MSU, OSU at home and visits Nebraska, Purdue, and Penn State

Penn State is at Virginia, at Iowa, at Purdue, at Nebraska and home vs OSU and Wisconsin

Purdue Michigan, @OSU, Wisconsin, Penn State, and @Iowa

Illinois @Arizona St, @Wisconsin, @Michigan, @OSU, @NW and Penn State

Purdue and Illinois can be eliminated immediately---they just don't have the staying power with those matchups.  Wisconsin is more talented but PSU has a more favorable schedule and gets Wisconsin at home.  I go with the dark (dark, dark) horse in PSU, amid the scandal.

Michigan over PSU in a very boring, lower scoring game.

I think USC gets tripped up @Stanford or @Washington (maybe ND, even), but they give Oregon their only loss.  The PAC12CG will be @USC and the Trojans beat the Ducks for the 3rd time in two seasons to go to the Rose Bowl.  After being embarrassed on the national stage by Alabama, the Wolverines, out to prove they're better than their 9-3 regular season record, upset the hometown favorites in Pasadena.

@703  Michigan's secondary is far from weak.  Likely, top 3 in the conference.  However, if your only benchmark is the OSU Michigan game from last year, I definitely understand why you'd say that.  We have two seniors, a junior, and sophomore Blake Countess who is probably the most talented of the group.  Lot's of game experience.  They still might get shown up by Barkley and his receivers, but not because they're bad.  USC is probably just better.

Hail: I just went back and looked at M!chigan's defensive passing stats from 2011. Ohio State isn't close to UM's worst game, Notre Dame and Northwestern really ripped apart the Wolverine pass-D. Western Michigan, VT, and Purdon't also had very good games passing.

@HAIL - I honestly think you'll have a better chance at beating 'Bama at JerryWorld than topping USC in Pasadena.  The only way you'll beat USC is if Denard progresses a lot through the whole season, and surprises the Trojan D by airing it out (like Pryor did against Oregon in '09).  You might be able to catch 'Bama slightly off guard because I don't think they've played an athlete as dynamic as Denard, whereas USC will have experienced Oregon twice (most likely) by that point (I know the comparison isn't perfect, seeing as Oregon and Michigan run different offenses, but I think the athleticism in the QB and RB departments are similar).

@703  I didn't say we were perfect, but we were ranked 16th in the country in pass defense (Wisc, MSU, OSU at #3, 12, 15) and gave up the fewest passing TDs of anyone in the top 27 passing defenses.  Countess didn't start until week 4 or 5, either.  Also, we won every game that you listed.

http://content.usatoday.com/sportsdata/football/ncaaf/stats/team-passing-defense

Last season doesn't translate into sqawt this year, but I'll stand by my comment of us being a top 3 secondary in the B1G.

Hodge you make valid points and could be absolutely right.  I wouldn't bet on Michigan beating USC or anyone in the Rose Bowl, at this point, but for now, I'll continue to make silly predictions that make me feel good about our chances.  Truth is, we're still 5 1/2 weeks away from footbal and it's downright depressing.
