The Opening (non-conspiracy topics)

I just wanted to see if anyone had any info on how The Opening is going. I saw Jayme Thompson ran a 4.54 40 (laser timed) and a 4.12 shuttle. 4.54 isn't blazing, but definitely quick for a safety. But 4.12 shuttle for a safety is unreal (talk about breaking on the ball). Any other updates?

Elliot ran a 4.46 his first 40 and an 4.42 his second from a few things I saw.

Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens

TOS is showing quite a few of the 40 times for OSU recruits and targets:

Mike Mitchell: 4.45 and 40-inch vertical

Ezekiel Elliott: 4.46

Cam Burrows: 4.57

Eli Woodard: 4.63

Also of note, Levonte Whitfield ran a 4.37, which is INSANE for a HS kid being laser-timed.

yeah considering an olb target was faster than them..

Not much different though than a lot of times you see at the combine.  You have to remember these times are laser-measured and completely accurate.  No stopwatches here.

Plus, these guys are both pretty "big/tall" for CB's, and they've yet to be in a college strength and conditioning program.  They have plenty of time to work on their form and improve their short-line speed while at OSU.

Those times compared to the other top CBs werent actually bad at all...some were running in the 4.7-4.8

A good forty has alot to do with the start. If guys run track they are probably alot better at starting quick and coming out low. I don't know if Burrows or Woodard run track at all. Fortys do show speed but were talking tenths of a seconds here. Who knows how fast they would be with some training on running it. I think whats most important is how fast guys are in pads.

Here is chat wrap with Derrick Green.  Kinda funny to see the direction of the questions:

Comment From Matt
Derrick Green, What is your time table for your decision?

2:46

Damon Sayles:
Green: "I don't really have one right now."

2:46

Comment From Guest
Derrick is Auburn going to get an official visit? Love to see you on the plains for game day!

2:47

Damon Sayles:
Green: "It's too early to say right now, but they're definitely with my top teams."

2:47

Comment From Neil
For Derrick Green - Is Michigan a serious contender? Any thoughts about their offensive line recruits over the last two years?

2:47

Damon Sayles:
Green: "They are very high on my list. I like how they have their top offensive linemen group. Me and David Dawson are really close."

2:48

Comment From Tim
Derrick, you excited to go to the BBQ at the Big House?

2:48

Damon Sayles:
Green: "Oh yes. Definitely."

2:48

Comment From Greg
Green, what style of offense do you want to play in? Would you commit to a school that doesn't run the style of offense you like?

2:49

Damon Sayles:
Green: "I would like to play in a pro-style offense. As for the other question, I don't know right now."

2:49

Last question for Green ...

There has been quite a bit of chatter in the Twittersphere about Burrows being a for sure safety at the next level today.

Set your avi

Taquan Mizzell: 4.57

Marcus Baugh: 4.8 range

Cam Burrows was in the top 10 of the SPARQ rating, even with his "slow" 40 time.  Obviously, that time wasn't terribly slow or he wouldn't be showing so high overall.

Alex put out a few tweets saying Mike Mitchell has a top 3 of FSU, Texas A&M, and OSU, and rumor flying that he could be a Buckeye by next week...

VAPOR TALON vs SUPER BAD

- QB Cooper Batteman demonstrated some nice wheels, running down an LB after he threw a pick. He easily tracked down the LB TWICE (once on the INT, and then a second time after getting juked the first time)

- Was not impressed with the mechanics/way QB Brice Ramsey threw the ball, but he lead a nice methodical drive down the field and didn't have a single incompletion (until the extra point).

- If you have any worries about ATH Jalen Marshall catching any passes, don't be. He caught a few nice ones right across the middle and in plenty of traffic.

- RB Ezekiel Elliott demonstrated some nice shifty moves. There was one specific play where he caught the ball out in some open space (the flat) and put a nice juke move on the defender to pick up an extra five yards.

- RB Derrick Green is a LOAD! Dude looked like a linebacker out the replaying RB.

- S Delano Hill was VERY impressive in the secondary. Made a number of pass-breakup plays.

- RB Ezekiel Elliot made a helluva snag, but unfortunately the ball was thrown too far & out of the end zone, so Elliot wasn't able to drag the foot. He was pretty damn close to getting two feet in tho.

- CB Jeryl Brazil had a couple nice pass breakups. I believe he's also the kid that ran the fastest 40 yrd dash time too.

- Wasn't really impressed with either of the QBs - Batteman and Ramsey. Both held onto the football too long and both severely under-threw the majority of their passes.

- RB Ezekiel Elliot again demonstrating some nice hands. He's going to fit that Percy Harvin / Chris Rainey role just fine.

- ATH Jalen Marshall with ANOTHER nice catch over the middle. He's now been targeted 3x, and 1 of those targets was significantly overthrown. Marshall is going to be fine at WR. He certainly demonstrated he has the hands for it, so don't worry about that.

- The two most impressive guys that stood out by far (to me) in the Vapor Talon vs Super Bad game were easily S Delano Hill (just an absolute ball hawk) and CB Jeryl Brazil (even had a TD on offense; kid is just insanely fast).

FIELD GENERALS vs ALPHA TALON

- QB Max Browne demonstrating very nice arm strength.

- QB Tyrone Swoopes really reminded me of Vince Young - very lax throws, kinda nonchalant, nothing special or eye-popping when you see him throw, but VERY comfortable and confident.

- QB Brown not making very good decisions. Just kinda winging it out there all over the place.

- S Marcell Harris with his SECOND INT. Dude is a Mack truck back there playing safety, and here has already demonstrated the ability to ball-hawk it. VERY impressed so far w this kid.

- RB Ryan Green looking very impressive. Already been targeted a couple times. Not sure if it's because of his energy (playing hard), his talent (his speed to get open), or Brown's tendency to check down (a lot).

- S Marcell Harris AGAIN breaking up a play.

- Wow. QB Swoopes with his THIRD pick, but lucky for him, they blew the whistle due to not releasing the ball in the 4 second allotment. Kid just doesn't know how to make a read just yet.

- QB Brown throws some BULLETS. Definitely has a VERY nice arm.

What was with Marshall's 40 time? seems terribly off... hows he looking in the open field, is he going to be our Percy Harvin?

He will play the flex role. The field at The Opening was pretty slippery/slow so I wouldn't take it too much into account. He has some nice open field moves.

Elliott looks like an elite talent in every camp he is in. Adding Mizzell or Green to complement him in this class would give Urban loads of playmaking options with his RBs.
