Shelton Gibson Twitter Comments

So a couple days ago Shelton Gibson posted his grades and credits on instagram and twitter to dispel the rumors about academics.  Today he is tweeting about alot of different schools showing mutual interest (TTUN included).  Is this a case where possibly UFM didn't accept his committment?  Alex and details? I see you RT alot of this

He wants attention. He realizes that he may be on the outisde looking in with us, and probably most of his other schools. WVU was probably the only one he listed that would take his commitment, bama probably won't, UM will be full after Treadwell, and OSU won't know for a while likely.

He should've committed back in the spring, everything could be settled by now. Now he's burning bridges

Also, look at the instagram about his grades. He got straight Ds and Cs for the end of his junior year. That concerns me as a coach at a university with high standards.

EDIT: hypothetically, of course.

He's not doing bad in school, but also borderline acedemics for a Big Ten school. I would think if they were in love with him, they'd get passed his grades. I think they are holding out for better talent.

I can't speak to Gibson vs others talent... I know nothing of the kid, but the grades aren't that bad.

Frankly, if he is willing to committ... I don't see why you don't take him. You can see some frustration in his twitter though.

Alex, was/is his offer commitable?

It's all academics. His offer was commitable.

I didn't look at the picture, but if it was truly Cs and Ds that isn't bad, it's down right horrible. High school is not that difficult and if you know you have a college football scholarship waiting if you can keep decent grades, it's really not that hard at get Bs

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

Triv, that's what I was thinking.  A C average is a 2.0 GPA in high school, correct?  Unless one is taking a lot of Advanced Placement courses in high school, I wouldn't call that good...

Sounds to me like the relationship is getting sour. jmo, but I don't see Gibson in this class.

I saw his pics and he had one D and a lot of A's B's and C's.

He would have announced 6/20 for OSU except for academics.

His gpa makes him eligible if the picture was accurate, but we could be looking at an issue with test scores or something like that.

Or if there had been a progressive decline in grades, giving him the chance to fix it in the fall.

BuckinBama's picture

Umm, I know one thing if I brought home a report card w/all C's, and D's, I would be "parentally ineligible" to play football. By being a star athlete, he probably could've gotten C's just by showing up and being quiet in class, then if he showed the least bit of effort, every teacher would've been trying to help him.

buck-I.8's picture
buck-I.8 on 17 Jul 2012 - 12:09pm #

It could be any one of these scenarios, but the point is he's being a little bit immature about it, and if he knows what's good for him he'll stop running off on twitter, because that's what'll turn the coaches off

Twitter: will always HURT you before it HELPS you. I don't think some of these youngsters understand "social media", and how quickly "tweeting" one thing can change the how people perceive you to be.

Seems like sour grapes to me or tweeting with the wrong intentions...could just be a cry for attention....this has been done to OSU for a while pending off the field stuff....that obviously hasn't been hashed out yet otherwise he would have publicly been a Buckeye on June 20....Auburn and OSU have lead the whole way and now all of a sudden he mentions Michigan, Florida, Alabama, WVU, etc? Doesn't that seem a little off to all of you? I wouldn't look too much into this.

All you need to know is Shelton wants to be a Buckeye and Ohio State wants him to be a Buckeye, but conditionally as long as he takes care of his stuff. Did Meyer tell him scram already? Don't think so, but could be. Is he just looking at back up options now? Perhaps.

Just weird to me if it wasn't OSU it would be Auburn and now he's tweeting about neither? Don't know what it means exactly but I wouldn't waste your time trying to figure out.

buck-I.8's picture
buck-I.8 on 17 Jul 2012 - 12:59pm #

He did tweet "Auburn is getting some good players". I think that reflects his interest, but yeah this is a statement pointed towards OSU.

The way I see it is there are three possibilities regarding Gibson's "grades" and each points to him not being in this class.  First, the grades might actually be a sticking point with the staff, in which case it'll take time for Gibson to demonstrate that he has turned things around academically.  Assuming he wants to work on his grades, by the time he improves his grades his spot might already be full.  Of course there's also the possiblity that despite his work he does not improve his academics, in which case he's out of the class.  Also, there's the possibility that he doesn't care about improving his grades, in which case he's not in the class.  Second, the "grades" might not be the real concern, but rather just a stall tactic while the staff tries to get somebody else on board.  If this is the case, the staff either succeeds and fills Gibson's spot, or Gibson gets sour and starts looking elsewhere.  Finally, the "grades" might just be message board chatter, in which case why didn't Gibson commit on the day he had long planned to commit?  Hopefully, Alex or somebody who has more than my guesswork will now tell me how off-base I am.

Set your avi
Alex on 17 Jul 2012 - 1:38pm #

AHH...Second is a good theory but not here...they love Gibson the player and ultimately took his commitment silently a while back on the condition he'd get his act in order, a source tells me....as for your third point, not just chatter---not sure if it's the actual grades or test scores but we've been told by a pretty good source something needs to shape up...as you said why didn't he commit when he WANTED to?.....you are definitely working in the right direction and this is a VERY weird recruitment....your first point in the above is the most legitimate IMO

There are times to avoid twitter, 1 is when you are drunk and the other is when you are pissed off/frustrated.  At the end of the day it just looks like sour grapes, and inevitably people will start calling the kid out, and saying he has no character etc.

I disagree, as long as no one important is watching your twitter, drunk tweets are classic.

Yeah Twitter doesn't help at all. I realized this when last year, a teacher saw a tweet I made and called my house.... I'm a lot smarter now!

This point stood out to me Alex said...twitter shouldn't be used so much to follow kids IMO.  I know you can and it's a free digital age world we live in now, but really...17 yr old kids.  I can see following Alex, Bill G or K. at bucknuts or whomever on twitter (like I do).  Not so sure listening to what these kids are saying on there is all important or even factual as Alex stated.  Again...just my opinion.  I hope Giby is a Buckeye...he's a speed burner OSU needs badly!

Not saying I wouldn't take him, but it would feel pretty gross.  He's already a Buckeye as far as I'm concerned.  Hope the kid gets to go where he wants.

Obviously his talking about UM is just a cry for attention and probably trying to anger some OSU fans. After that a UM recruiting guy tweeted Shelton about UM and Shelton replied that he needed a coach's number. With all the widespread WR recruiting UM has done, If they're not in contact with Gibson, they probably will never be.

Buck-I.8, I noticed that too. At this point, I think he's just bitter that Urban didn't take his commitment. Kid needs to quit complaining and get his grades up.

I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.

I don't have a twitter account but I saw this thread & googled Sheltons. I couldn't find the grades but I saw the stuff about other teams. I'm no expert & find tweet deciphering to be pointless usually but...if he wants to be a Buckeye - this was a silly move. Looks to me like like he was sent packing & is angry about it or wants to force someone's hand. Either way, he's looking for some attention but this is not the best message to put out to there...

My thoughts are...  If Shelton's classroom performance isnt up to standards,  & instead of fixing the problem,  he'd rather take the low road, & find someone lesser school to accept his ineptitude,   then he's welcome to go look.
