Rod Smith potential

Just wanted to post a forum topic about Rod Smith and the potential effect of the jordan hall injury. What I mean is now with Hall injured does anybody think this will finally give him a chance to show the type of player he is? I know everybody goes back to his fumbling problem, but before the season he was getting great reviews out of camp last year. Also since Urban's arrival from what I have been reading he has really been buying into the program Urban is trying to run. I know Hall was going to play more of a pivot postion than a true rb, but this should open up some carries and potential other ways for him to get the ball in his hands. I think he can be a real playmaker as long as he gets his fumbling issue resolved... Whats everybodies thoughts?

Hyde will get a majority of carries, followed by probably Brionte, then Rod. Brionte looked pretty good in the spring.

Check back tonight at 6pm - just wrote an article on Rod.

Hyde is going to be the primary back to start the year but Brionte Dunn will get a chance to prove himself immediately. The better he does, the more carries he will receive.

I believe Urban is fair, and my opinion is not an indication of talent and skill (or lack thereof) of Hyde or Smith but Brionte is Meyer's guy.

When Meyer was hired, he was rumored to be drinking scUMs kool-aid and although still a buckeye commit, already had one foot in that crappy state. Meyer came in, watched him drop 300 yds on Massilon Washington and threw the kitchen sink at him to keep him a buckeye.

That is going to play a major role in who gets what carries this season, I wouldn't look for Rod Smith to see many carries, he may get 7-10 touches early in the season and then I wouldn't expect to see him hit the field (on offense at least, ST maybe) once B1G starts

I would like to see Rod get a chance to be honest. He was a highly touted recruit, had some fumbles & hasn't had any opportunities since. I'd like to see what he can do in OOC games & if he can make plays & not drop the ball - why not give him a shot.

I'll be looking froward to seeing the article tonight.

I'm a bit skeptical because if Smith were a budding star, he probably would have forced his way into a little higher production last year.

I realize that Eddie George only ran for like 175 yds his frosh year and like 225 yds his sophomore year before exploding for over 1400 yds as a junior. However, Eddie was competing against a stable of very good, veteran backs - Robert Smith, Raymont Harris, Butler By'not'e. Heck, even FB Jeff Cothran, who played in the NFL, was eating up a lot of carries during Eddie's first two years.

We had high expectations for the RBs going into last year, but they were several notches below what Eddie was competing with.

On the other hand, I'd never count R. Smith out, either.

It is up to Rod Smith.

I just think his playmaking ability is what makes him special. He's not as fast as hyde as far as top end speed, but for his size he has a lot more wiggle and more elusivness than Hyde does. Hyde while a very good prospect when i watch him he runs straight ahead kind of like a bull. I just think if he can get this fumble problem resolved when you put the pads on you really can see the talent he's got.

@Fido,

For as disappointed as we all want to be in the RBs from last year, we have to remember that if everyone watching TV knew we were running, so did the other team's defense.  I think we have a talented backfield that was completely masked last year due to the absence of a passing game and creative play calling.

I don't claim to know how these guys are practicing so I assume that those who practice the best will get the chances.  Smith is certainly an intriguing option.  We already have guys that will fit this playmaker spot very well, both at RB and at WR.  These guys will do very well if given the chance.  They just have to go out there and earn it.  In my opinion, this "we need a playmaker" is not a cry for talent, it's a motivational tactic to get some young talent on the offensive side to step up.

itll be mainly hyde and brionte and rod will split behind him. but i could see all three getting a good bit of use. in this offense anyone who can contribute will get a shot and i could see all 3 getting carries/catches

Well i like college and i like football...and im gunna keep doin em both cause they make me feel good!!!

Anyone else think that he'd be a great fit to take over Boren's spot next year? He's not necessarily suited to be a running back in Urban's offense, so maybe he could be converted to the H-Back spot? He's like 6'3" and 230, so he's got the size.

I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.

Rod Smith has the stride and the size to be the next Eddie George.  I guess anyone could say the same about Lydell Ross, too.  Smith shares some of the same problems with the latter, namely some apprehension hitting the holes and very little breakaway ability.  But I'm with you, I think he could be awesome.  He can lunge forward for extra yardage, which might be his best attribute that I noticed.

If he can show some breakaway ability this year when getting the ball in space in a Meyer offense (toss sweeps, options, etc), you could see a competition between Hyde and Smith.  But Hyde has shown he's a cannonball that can also get the big play, so it's safe to say #34 is going to be leading in the starter race.

@Bucks: I think Brionte has already edged Smith somewhat, so Rod will have to take back his spot first.

If Rod actually shows something then yes. He had all the opportunity in the world last year with the disaster of an offense. I think he's facing a tough situation now with the best backs from Ohio since Beanie in Dunn and Ball. When Hyde Hall and Dunn get most of the carries this season I think he gets pissed and leaves.
