With the current Penn State players given the OK to transfer without sitting out, what's the possibility that so many players leave the program that they don't have enough bodies/talent to compete this season? Anyone else see this as a possibility once the dominoes start to fall? Silas Redd to USC could be the start of numerous transfers.

If there was a mass exodus, maybe you get something similar to football recruiting on campus like Marshall U. did after the plane crash. Who knows...
If that's the case, I fully expect them to take the Nessessary Roughness approach and fill the roster with non-traditional students like Sinbad and Scott Bakula.
That's what happened to SMU in '88. They were death penalty'd in '87, and could only play away games in '88, but lost so many players to transfers that they cancelled that season, as well.
I don't believe that will be possible. Don't get me wrong, they may not be good or competitive, but there are people who would die to play for Penn State, and sanctions don't matter. They may get a bunch of 0 star or 1 star recruits, but they'll be able to fill the roster.
All I'm trying to get at is, there are a lot of Penn State's version of "Rudy Ruettiger" who will do whatever they could to play for the Nittany Lions.
0% chance
Does anyone know if PSU has any decent offensive linemen coming in or currently on their roster that Urban might be interested in?

i would imagine urban is doing whatever he can for dorian johnson...

I don't think you're going to see quite the mass exodus that SMU saw. SMU was big in their own right back in the day, but this is Penn freakin' State. There are opportunities to lead the way in redefining the new era of football at that university, and there are many out there that loved PSU as kids that would love to be a part of that. Sure, there will be transfers and decommitments, and losing a Silas Redd would be a big blow, but with the great opportunity more kids will have to play at PSU that normally wouldn't have that chance, and without the pressure that normally comes with playing there, I think more kids will stay there than you might think.
Class of 2010.
I'm not sure that you'll see a lot of 'rats' leaving the sinking ship, however...over the next four years I doubt you'll see many 'rats' volunteering for sea-duty on the U.S.S Penn State.
Yeah, them not having enough guys to play is never going to happen. Think about if it was OSU. If it was potentially about not having a football team, the walk on tryout would have 15,000 kids show up. That is the only positive for the football team. Kids who aren't as talented can now possibly get a chance to play at their dream school, start from scratch building a program the way it should be, and possibly in the meantime restore some integrity and perspective to the university.
When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."
I think that if I was a Penn State recruit I would look at it like this:
If the sactions would have never occured, what could I REALISTICALLY hope to have achieved at Penn State over my football career?
1) Four bowl berths. They always seem to be eligible so it seems safe to assume this would be true.
2) Maybe one B1G Championship Game. It will always bebetween OSU, Wisc, and PSU...lets throw them a bone here.
3) 0 National Title Games (Semi-final and Final). Are they really that close to playing in the National title Game...I don't think so.
Give me a redshirt year and I get a possible bowl berth back.
So really I just miss three possible bowl games and a possible B1G Champ Game. Doesn't seem to be a whole lot to me...but that is just me.
Xenia - I think you strongly underestimate the importance of playing in bowl games. Missing out on playing in 3 bowl games is a big deal for kids. Without the chance of playing in a bowl game, many kids will probably feel like they have nothing to play for.
But more than just missing out on playing a bowl is the fact that you have to wonder if PSU will even be able to field a competitive team while they are serving this punishment. With reduced scholarships and bowl bans they cannot expect to get top recruits to commit there. About the only thing they will be able to sell a kid on is probably playing time.
Birthing 4 bowls sounds pretty painful to me...
No, but, can you imagine if a Penn state squad full of walk ons and 1 stars beat an OSU or Michigan team? Yikes, that would be bad.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

I actually think this season will be PSU's best season for awhile. They'll lose some players and a decent amount of their recruiting class, but on the whole they will still be competitive. That'll be a little less true each year as the recruiting/scholarship limits start to limit the talent of what players are starting. Most this year's class wouldn't have started this year anyway.
I could see them having an us-against-the-world mentality this year and doing pretty well. I could see them finishing with 3 losses or 4 losses, which is about what I'd have pegged them for before all the sanctions.
Xenia, I'm sure I'm not the only former college athlete here would resectfully disagree with you. My sport didn't have bowl games but I wouldn't even consider a school that was banned from post season play. We played the game because we wanted to be champions. That's why I played at a school I was never a fan of and only transferred to the school I loved - OSU - after I walked away from the game.
Simply put, the PSU players who love the school more than the game will stay, those who love the game more than the school will leave.
If I was personally in this situation as a PSU Football player and I did decide to transfer I'd eliminate all B1G schools. If you transfer within B1G then you have to play against your old team and I could see that situation being a bit messy. Transfer out of B1G and you don't have to play your old school and potentially have to go into State College and be a distraction/get boo'ed. Make it simple and transfer to WVU, PITT, Rutgers, USC, ect...... That is what I'd do.
Xenia- you didnt take into account the fact that PSU won't be getting any good players and will have to fill their roster with walk-ons. Their team will be mediocre at best. If I'm a recruit I'm gonna go to a school with loads of talent so my play could benefit off others. That's just me though.

Popki I think could be a game manager
If I was a PSU player or recruit I'd be worried about more coming out and the NCAA getting back in the picture with The Big Ban Hammer. I'd also be worried that I would end up in a second or third rate conference after this year.
Some sort of Necessary Roughness/The Replacements scenario sounds pretty awesome to me. Would love to see the Penn State defense come out and do wrestling moves on the opposing team.
