Paterno Statue Taken Down

It's done. The Joe Paterno statue was removed this morning and taken into Beaver Stadium.

Statement from PSU President:  http://live.psu.edu/story/60474

Good riddance.

Espn was also reporting that a unprecedented punishment was going to be announced for Penn St. tomorrow. Anyone want to venture a guess on what that means?

Crusher: Either PSU had a punishment in place already or they are going to get hammered. (or both) It should be interesting, though.

It's true... We really are a bunch of nuts!
Go Bucks!

They need to melt it down so in the future they never get the stupid idea to put it back.

I wish JoePa was alive today so he can see how he ruined his legacy but being a hypocrite. I want him to answer for his sins. He allowed Sandusky to prey on innocent children for 14 years...

Am I in thee minority that thinks closing down the program is wrong? I just hate to see people who had nothing to do with this lose their jobs or their buisness. If the program is shut down many faculty members will lose their jobs do to lack of funding. Plus businesses will be destroyed. The local economy will be destroyed. Now there isn't anyone more pissed off about what happened than me but ruining the lives of people that had nothing to do with this doesn't sound like justice to me. Those involved however should never see the light of day ever again.

I don't think the football program funds anything in the academic world. They fund the athletic program.

Thr on,y people who might lose their jobs are coaches. Stadium ushers and such only work 6 or 7 Saturdays a year so they do this for additional pay. Local businesses will get hurt but they should be able to survive. State College won't exactly be a ghost town.

@ Crusher -- This is true and a very good and realistic way to think of it. The whole reason I have been calling for the school to shut things down for a year is because of the culture there. Those same people there that are defending JoePa and the program to the death are most definitely part of the problem. I've just felt that they need this to get some perspective in their lives. Logistically it's not just that simple. Understood. I just think there needs to be a way that they realize that they are part of the problem and that they need to get their feet back down on the ground again. By shutting down the football season for a year or two everyone involved comes out at a loss. Even if they do play football, if they donate the revenue to abuse victims there could still be a winner out of the situation. I just don't want the same fans who still don't fully understand the magnitude of the situation and still revere Paterno and the football program as divine to win as well. What will they have gained out of all of this? That no matter what football will prevail.

I agree with Crusher to a certain extent...which was why I had been saying for a while that PSU wouldn't get hammered because of HV being so dependent on Football program for revenue.  I'm not so sure what will happen now (doubt the Death Penalty) but feel a multi-year bowl ban as well as reduction of scholarships is definitely on the way.  Not sure how bad it will effect jobs and economy but it should be drastic to drive the point home this culture is dead and gone at PSU.

Good points again Bolt...not trying to polish your berry's this morning with the compliments...you just make great points to think about.

Paterno's family statement on this. Would they please shut up?

I do agree with them.... The taking down of the statue won't help the victims but this is more about the University cleaning itself of Paterno's tarnished legacy. The university should not be proud of Paterno.
