Offense vs. Defense Recruit Intrest

When Urban Meyer was initially hired I thought... What offensive player wouldnt want to come and play for the Urbanator? The last two classes have had mainly defensive stars in it. Do you think the 2014 class will turn the corner or do you think we continue to stock pile defensive talent and miss on big name guys again?

Once the product is out there for recruits to see there will be higher interest.

defense wins championships. hoping coach urban keeps recruiting the best defensive talent he can get. think i saw where the gators once blocked two punts by kentucky in the first quarter, and the rout was on. however i am sure coach will recruit a balanced mix of offense and defense. as for missing out on big name guys? urban now has a whole year to recruit the 2014 class. i will predict a class rating near 4.25.

based on how our defense performed last year (not the the offense was much better...), we need to amp up the defense...Ive watched Florida highlights from 2005, their defenses in 2006 and 2008 were incredibly fast, intelligent, and tough (even their DBs could knock out opposing players)...with the talent we bring in anyways, I cant wait for our defense to play that fast...everybody should watch youtubes of UF's defense during the Urban years

Defense wins championships.  So I have no problem with the massive stockpile of arms we've been accumulating on the defensive side of the ball.

But yes, it is time... I fully expect Meyer to land 1-2 high profile offensive weapons in the 2014 class.  If he doesn't, I will be pretty upset.  It's time.

2013 offensive recruits include JT Barrett, Jalin Marshall, Ezekiel Elliot, and Marcus Baugh.  All of these guys are among the top recruits in the nation at their positions.  I'd say that's pretty good recruiting on the offensive side of the ball.

Hard to tell if we missed on anyone on offense since they haven't even played a down. Plus something people over look is the fact some parents/athletes arent into or can't afford the camp circuit so their ratings are lower than others. Perfect example my brother(6-4 220) lead southern Ohio in receiving one year and never got recruited by anybody other than Muskingum, he never sent tapes nor did his small town AD do it either. The next year a boy on same team ends up going to Central Michigan, and wore the camp circuit out. My brother got more Basketball scholarship offers because they went to state and he showcased averaging 32 points throughout tournament.

It's the exposure alot of times. The dynamics of recruiting has changed so much. Yes there are kids like Clowney who are freaks and it all comes together( camp, star ratings, and on field performances), but for every one of those, there is an AJ Hawk.

Thomas, Marshall,Jacobs,Southward- one of those at minimum, will be a household name.

Ahh Saturday- While these guys are good and I whole hardetly agree... the focus the past two classes that Urban has been able to recruit have been on the D-Line and Secondary. With Mitchell and Lewis and possibly Bell coming on board we are HEAVY on the defensive side of things. I know Urban loves building his D but now its time to even out things a little. The early emphasis looks to be on Linebackers again in 14. I mean I have no problem watching us beat a team 7-0 but JT Barrett is going to need a little more help when he takes over the reigns from Braxton in a few years.

Especially on the offensive line.

^^^  In 2012 OSU signed five guys for the OL.  That included three 4* recruits (if you care for that sort of thing) as well as another Boren who has already supplanted Bobek (former #1 center prospect in the country) in the depth chart.  IMO people fretting over OL recruiting are reacting primarily to three things. First, the hangover of the Bollman years where we learned to be very worried about OL recruiting, development, performance.  Second, people are reacting to the haul of OL at michigan who has undoubtedly done very well in the last two classes. Finally, people are disappointed (including myself) that we missed out on several of our top targets along the OL this year.  However, we did manage to land the top OL in Ohio in Evan Lisle, and it would appear that despite his lack-o-stars the staff at least is happy with Tim Gardiner.  I'll say it again, we are doing better than fine recruiting the offensive side of the ball.

My main reaction to the OL is the lack of nabbing the top targets. That worries me a bit...

Lisle was a top target (#1 in Ohio and top 15 OT nationally I believe) and we are sitting pretty for several 2014 top OL without any of them even seeing how our offense will look. I believe 2014 will be excellent, and 2015 will give us the number one recruiting class in the country (get our 3 schollys back, plus we have 25+ sophomores on scholarship currently)

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

I admit it. Um's offensive line haul does make me nervous about OSUs. But your right of course, put into context we are not in bad shape on OL really.

the guy dominated at utah and bgsu.... im pretty sure they are not known for pulling 5* recruits, furthermore, the other coaches dont have mariotti as their s&c coach

mark may wins douchebag of the year... again

@Sir Rick ... Thats what I keep saying to myself this dude won big at Bowling Green, and Utah. No way in hell he can't win at OSU. Not to mention this is OSU, and the cupboard is NEVER bare.

who cares about offense? We have Braxton as a sophomore, our receivers are ok contrary to what others say, our RB's should be in good shape for years to come, we need work on the O-Line no doubt but with Brax and the offensive philosophy we have now we should at the very least be mediocre and probably pretty damn solid but definitely not incompetent (look at what Urban did with Josh Harris at BG). We should have very good special teams and now we're loading up on defense, we should be elite. i admit defense is boring to watch but not when its your team shutting people out. I'd rather have Noah Spence, Vonn Bell and Cam Burrows than a true 5 star RB, WR and O-Lineman or something similar to that. Our Troy Smith, Ted Ginn and (insert another player here) were no match for that Florida D. I think thats what Urban is trying to replicate.

IMO a win is a win, and if that win comes in the form of a 14-0 nailbiter, or a 41-0 blowout I don't care.  The fact is defense wins championships, and after Tresselball we should all be understanding of that.  Everyone just expects that Urban is going to have this major step up after Tressel, which he will, but sometimes its not even the recruits you bring in, but the system they play in and the offensive scheme.

The second thing is that defense takes a lot longer to build.  We have the D-line pretty well set, and that is the foundation of a team.  We have a QB now and for the future who fit the mold of the Urban QB.  An offensive playmaker can just jump in his freshman year, while the defense generally needs time to get bigger and stronger.
