Based on commentary at BSD and the Harrisburg Patriot-News, I'll go with 50 years... if ever.
The more I think about this cult-mindset, the more I think that the PSU community is ultimately responsible for this tragedy. Their deification of Paterno allowed him to rule State College like a despot. This unassailable position enabled him to convince otherwise reasonable people to look the other way and permit a monster to continue preying on the vulnerable.
That's Paterno's real legacy to the Penn State community.
I find it hard to view Paterno as one of the good guys any more...all of his good doesnt forgive this massive wrong he and the others involved in this disgrace did...the whole 'could have done more' routine doesnt help IMO
They need to feel that way too. It is so important that his image remain un touched that they will ingore anything and everything that damages Joe. Generally, their defense of the man boils down to two things.
1) He didn't really know-Obviously this isn't the case anymore. "After speaking with Joe" sort of damns him.
2) He did so much for the school-One covered up child rape undoes decades of good work. Nothing he did good for PSU matches the bad he did by aiding in the cover up, let alone the dozens that occurred.
People need Joe Paterno to be a saint. Their lives are that empty. To hell with them, Joe, Curley, Spanier, Jerry, and anyone else who had a hand in it.
The only part about this story that makes me smile is that for all the power and money these crusty old dudes wielded, they all got brought to their knees by a 20 something girl who did her job admirably and asked to many questions. If I could vote for Time Magazine's person of the year, it'd be Sara Ganim.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
If I'm a PSU fan, I want that Joe Pa statue outside of Beaver Stadium removed.
All it does now is remind people of the embarassment, shame, cover-up, scandal & deceit involved with this whole situation. And, it's going to do it in a very public, constantly visual way.
The problem is - there's so much over there that's named after the Paternos...the library, and other buildings. But, the one outside the football stadium should be taken down because it relates directly to this cover-up. Yes, Joe did a lot of good for the community, but this cover-up taints the legacy. It's an eery reminder of the cult-like status, god complex, and lifetime tenure associated with Joe Pa & PSU. All this cover-up in the name of image and legacy.
NC, here is the end of Paterno's round with the Grand Jury. I'm not proud to admit I got it from SbB (First hit on the Google Search)
Q: Other than the incident that Mike McQueary reported to you, do you know in any way, through rumor, direct knowledge or any other fashion, of any other inappropriate sexual conduct by Jerry Sandusky with young boys?
Mr. Paterno: I do not know of anything else that Jerry would be involved in of that nature, no. I do not know of it.
You did mention — I think you said something about a rumor. It may have been discussed in my presence, something else about somebody.
I don’t know.
I don’t remember, and I could not honestly say I heard a rumor.
Q: You indicated that your report was made directly to Tim Curley. Do you know of that report being made to anyone else that was a university official?
Mr. Paterno: No, because I figured that Tim would handle it appropriately.
I have a tremendous amount of confidence in Mr. Curley and I thought he would look into it and handle it appropriately.
Q: We have no further questions of you.
I do believe that might be to what you are referring. Paterno did know that report was made to other people so we might as well add "Liar" to the list of Paterno adjectives.

Uh, you're about 10 months behind on your Paterno news. That was one of the first things that happened after Paterno was fired.

To PSU fans, Paterno is a God who could do no wrong. They will defend him forever.

Brewster, you know what else this email proves? Paterno lied to the Grand Jury.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he testify that he had no other discussions about the event after his initial report to Curley?
Anyone up to speed on the Grand Jury report?
