Buckeye Football on Blu Ray / HD Video / DVD Widescreen ?

Hi all.

I just purchased a 1080p HDTV and a Blu Ray player.

It works great with Blu Ray discs, HD broadcasts and DVD that was encoded for widescreen.

However, my official 2002 & 2006 Fiesta bowl DVDs look horrible, like someone made a DVD from an old VHS.

Are there collectible games that are in HD or widescreen DVD format?

Thanks.

Nah you're kinda screwed -- that's just the nature of the technology though. VHS tapes are in 333x480 resolution most commonly while DVD is in 720x480 resolution (HD is 1280x720 and the highest resolution is 1920x1080 -- what they call full 1080) most commonly and the bigger and bigger screen you play them on, the more and more blocky/pixelated they will appear. I have all the 2002 and 2006 games on DVD and when I play them on one of my big TVs they look awful, but that's just the way it is. If I play them on my 28'' computer monitor though they look better because the pixels are smaller on a smaller screen.

As far as purchasing in HD, no, as sweet said, in 2002 HD didn't exist -- DVD or VHS is about as good as you will find. It did exist in 2006 but it was not very common -- if you can find someone who recorded the games in high definition back then and has encoded them into blu ray format they might sell you copies but even today it's tough to record in a common blu ray format due to all the regulations and different formats. The equipment I use to record all the games in 1920x1080 I use to burn the games to blu ray but it's specific format for my blu ray players -- I don't think it will play properly on different make blu ray players just as an example.

Thanks for replying.

Even though DVDs are lower resolution, I've found that DVDs that were digitally encoded for widescreen display look fine on my 1080p big screen.  My Blu-Ray player "upscales" these DVDs in a smooth way.

The problem with my Buckeye DVDs is that they look like a cheap format conversion from VHS, instead of native digital / widescreen.

I'm just wondering if you can find copies that are DVD-native.

It doesn't matter if HD wasn't around in 2002. They have re-released movies from the 80s on blu-ray. That being said, I doubt any football games have be converted commercially. If you can't find any with a quick internet search, there are probably not any available.

@ UPNORTHBUCKEYE

It matters a great deal. If the movie wasn't filmed with HD cameras, there's only so much you can do to improve the quality of the movie through upconversion. Sure, they'll reformat it to widescreen so it doesn't look stretched on today's widescreen tvs but it doesn't improve the look by just burning it to blu-ray instead of DVD. Don't think of blu-ray as a format. It's just a form of optical storage media. I can and have burned full 1080 resolution games to dual layer DVDs in full 1920x1080 high definition. The disc itself is just media storage, it doesn't have any affect on the format or resolution of what's stored on it -- how the movie files are encoded / muxed is what matters.

You'll do yourself and your wallet a favor in avoiding re-purchasing movies from the non-HD days on blu ray. Get them on DVD and then play them in a player that will upconvert. The device will do the best it can on those movies as you will not see much improvement beyond basic upconversion.

Have been thinking about this for awhile now but why do they only sell the bowl games instead of just selling the entire season like they do with tv shows?

Anyone know if the 97 Rose Bowl is available anywhere? I would love to get that game of DVD.

@ michaec5

Great question. If I had an answer I would've gone that route instead of purchasing a bunch of equipment and recording all the games myself to burn to blu ray, lol.

@ Buckeyeneer

I did a quick Google search for you but I didn't see any retailers with it. I did see a few torrent links but I didn't dig deep enough to see if the torrents are still active (probably not). That might be your only shot, though. You might even post up on multiple Buckeye message boards to see if someone has an image .iso of the game or even raw .ts / .mp4 format recordings. Someone on Bucknuts hooked me up with the 2010 Rose Bowl before I got my recording equipment. They had it in 1280 x 720 (not full 1080, but still HD and it looks great)  and sent me the .mp4 so I could mux it into blu ray. Someone may have the 1997 Rose Bowl for you.

Thanks Razrback16.

Sorry for making you do a Google searches for me. For what its worth, I searched for it before I posted but all I could find were bootlegs. I was hoping that there might be an "official" version out there somewhere as it is probably one of the top 3 bowl games for OSU (where we won) in the last 20 years. I mean shoot, I can find stuff from the 60s on DVD but not the 90s.

If you ever find it post up a link. :) That was a great game. You can at least watch the drive thrus on Youtube if you really are itching to see part of it.
