Here's a video of Joey Bosa squatting 500 lbs. Appears to be 8 times. Impressive that he is 17 years old and it is not done in a squat rack. Powerful kid. Cannot wait to watch him play.

Form wasn't perfect but not terrible either. Least he wasn't doing knee crunches.
I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.
That's more than impressive, that's elite powerlifting strong! Take care of those knees though kid. No need to squat that heavy to gain explosiveness, strength and power.

Urban recruits a different type of beast I can't wait to get this season started!!!!!!
Hardly home but always reppin
Buckeyejason - For his age, you are correct.
I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.
what do you mean knee crunches?

"Bosa Power" sounds like a name for a workout DVD.

That's what I call it when a dude stacks a lot of weight in the gym and he travels approximately 2 inches with it. Because of the angle of the camera it was hard to see if Bosa's quads actually went parallel to the floor, which is what qualifies as an official lift in power lifting meets. Regardless, the travel was enough to incorporate some deep muscle fiber growth. He was doing work! Excellent effort for a 17 year old kid.

I absolutley love when I go to my local gym and see one of two things at the squat rack. Either its gathering dust because no one uses it (which is great for me) or there is some dude who fires himself up and throws on 4 or 5 plates per side, stands up all defiantley with his "I got this" look and barely gets his knees past a 90 degree angle, slams said bar back down and acts like he accomplished something. I had a football coach tell me he'd rather see me do 10 reps with 100 pounds the right way than 1 rep with 300 pounds the wrong way. As a former member of the 500 club myself, I can appriciate when a kid tries to do it right. Nothing makes me laugh harder than dudes who just don't do it.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
Yeah, he's gotta really sink down into that thing. Do less, get more out of each one, it'll be a better workout. Not bad, though.
I think we're looking at the next John Simon
Agreed, all about the form not the weight. I'm an avid weightlifter myself.
Nicholas l Ernst
Def would not have counted at a powerlifting comp, but impressive regardless
Buck I-.8
I don't think we'll see another John Simon..a kid like that with that work ethic and humbleness comes once in a very long time. We could only hope though.
Can we get a weightlifting/fitness thread going? Iknow irricoir is a lifter, and it sounds like Brewster million and Bengal is as well. Would be kind of cool.

@JASON, I meant more in being a workout warrior, maybe without the humility. In the same way Simon is "Tebowish", doesn't mean he's devoted to religion haha.
I second the idea about a lifting thread, I'd love to talk to some other serious lifters.
I agree, a lifting thread needs to happen.
I concur.
Nicholas l Ernst
I wouldn't mind a lifting thread either.

Let us not forget Billy Price, who was recruited by Simon AND family. He has a really good family around him and he is also known as a relentless workout warrior. Can you imagine what these guys will be like in 2-3 years, heck, what all of our recruits will be like if Price and Bosa set the tone as leaders for the program
I gotcha Buck-I.8, he seems to fit the workout warrior mold. Joel Hale does to from what I know. Should give us some beasties on the line in a few years. +3 on the weightlifting thread, Sweeet!

Those were half squats, not even close to full squats. But a very strong young man none the less.

All I know is imagine how strong this dude will be once he gets proper training! The guy is a beast as is and you can see there still is plenty of room for improvement!
How many of those you think simon does? I don't know what the combine record is for squats, if they do them. I know the record for benching 225 is 51 reps.
Ohio and Pennsylvania are universally accepted as the heart of the power lifting and to some extent the bodybuilding movement. I was always amazed at how many large bodybuilders I saw in our old rusty gyms when I was young. I worked hard in preparation for the USMC. Little did I know that I should have focused more on cardio, than mass building. My cardio wasn't bad. I maintained what I developed from my senior year of wrestling but I shot up from 145 to 185 in just 5 months. Most of that was putting water weight back into my system. I wrestled in the pre hydration test years. Back on point, It might have been because I was so young and smaller that I thought so much of the other dedicated men in the gym but I don't see that same level of drive and dedication but in a select few, in other areas of the nation.
I know that there are certain areas in California and random places in Florida dedicated to that lifestyle but I have never seen such a concentrated interest as when I was at home. There is a town in Alabama, Trussvile to be exact, where there seems to be a blooming interest in the sport. I think law enforcement needs to protect some of the kids at that high school there. Some of those guys I saw there on a business trip looked much larger than Bosa. I am normally the first guy to give someone the benefit of the doubt when it comes to accusations of "supplemental use" but it was a little too obvious in this instance.
Sorry for the way my comment bounced around. I too enjoy talking about the challenge of physical development.
I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.
I agree, and there seems to be a giant community of serious lifters at OSU. I lift at JO South, and there's definitely a strong contingent there
The JO North is full of people using the squat racks for shoulder shrugs. God damn that pisses me off.
@ IRRICOIR, powerlifting is popular in Louisville and growing in KY as well. I competed in high school and we would have a few meets in state, a state meet, and went to the NASA nationals every year. My high school has won nationals and state 10 or so consecutive years now. Never thought about competing out of state, but that could have been a great experience.
There is also a powerlifting club at OSU that I thought about joining but they were into using squat straps and bench suits. When I trained for meets and competed I was never allowed to use those so I am not a big fan of them.
@Javalen - What's the big deal? *shrugs shoulders* ;-p
How much weight could any of the guys referring to lifting/squatting do at 17 years old? I understand this is the interwebs and we are are all capable of amazing things x 2. In comparison to what Bosa is doing, anybody here compare with his current age @ 500 lbs., even if not olympic form?
I can confirm with certainty that I would be crushed under that kind of weight...
Squirrel,
The Combine actually doesn't measure the squat. I don't know why because I always thought it and the deadlift is a better measure of over all strength than the bench press. I'm certain all NFL players do the excercise but I find it a little odd it isn't a measurable at the Combine itself.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
Good information! Yeah I know there are isolated areas in every state where certain activities are favored more than others. It just appeared that no matter where I went in Ohio lifting and Buckeyes were always prominent.
Yeah, I have never used a suit for lifting. I always believed that if I wouldn't have it on (in the real world) when I needed it then I didn't want to lift with it. The only exception were things that supported my back and knees. I was never much of a power lifter. I typically did a blend of shaping and strength movements. In my prime I was a mid 500 on bench low 7s on deadlift and high 7's on squat. those numbers when compared to the elite powerlifters as mentioned above, were no where close to theirs. Leave it to Ohio lifters to leave you humbled. Just when I thought I was accomplishing something in the south, I'd come home and always found someone to impress me in the gym.
I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.
FortMeyer - at his age I was lifting 315 for a single rep and squatting 350, proper form. I was 185lbs. I don't take anything away from what he accomplished. So to answer your question honestly, I did not achieve the accomplishments that he has. I was not as strong as he is. I also have a much different frame than he has. I hope that in everything I posted above, that it does not appear that I am trying to discredit him.
Regardless of age there are a few things that could be tightened up on his lift and I don't think anyone mentioning those things are trying to tear him down.
I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.
Certainly not trying to discredit your remarks in any way Irricoir. Just curious as to how what Bosa is doing ranks with others. Seems like a lot of weight for a high school football player as opposed to a weight lifter. I think his form problems will be corrected at OSU. Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks Fort. I think I read too deeply into your question. Without a doubt he's lifting solid weight. I knew a guy in high school that was maxing close to 650 on squats but he was no where as lean as Bosa nor athletic. I am excited about his potential. John Simon is probably his greatest comparison. I am not sure what John's number looked like in HS. I think Simon probably did more volume training if I remember what I read about him correctly. (So he didn't fatigue as quickly during the game)
I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.
@Fortmeyer
i actually remember a guy in my HS doing 600 plus with good form but he was not near the athlete that Bosa is. Bosa is sure to be a beast after a few years on campus and with Marioti.

@Javalen Yeah, a lot of guys at JO seem to be more into glamour workouts (traps, bis, tris) then actualy building.
Just imagine if we end up getting Da'Shawn Hand in the 2014 class... We could end up with a D-line rotation with Spence, Washington, Bosa, Hand, Schutt, Price, Hill, Mike Bennett & Steve Miller, etc.... hot damn, that would be impressive.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
all u had to say was Spence, Bosa and Hand. lol that wouldnt even be fair to the rest of the B1G. We're gunna need that if we want multiple championships but that is just expecting entirely too much out of Urban Meyer. then again it is a realistic possibility, we already have 2 of them on board. I still get shivers thinking of Spence in an OSU uniform. Still cant believe we got him. To me, if we get Vonn Bell then it could be the best defensive unit we've ever seen at OSU (just on potential obviously.)
Sounds like we have a few weight lifters on here, which is awesome. Bosa is a strong dude, but he is going nowhere close to parallel. Proper technique grows muscle so much faster. check out this link below:

If that interests you, just google stronglifts 5x5. It is a pretty amazing workout. I have been doing it for a few months now, and the results have been pleasant.
@SHADYBUCK - I feel you on Spence. We haven't had a player with elite pass rushing potential like him in a LONG time. I can't wait to see some true speed off the edge and the QBs of the Big 10 peeing down their legs.
I played DIII football down at washington and jefferson and considered myself pretty strong. My best max bench was 345 hen i weighed roughly 205 (soaking wet) my Junior year of college, which got me pumped as hell that i got it. Then, I clear the rack, and This massive Cro Magnon Man comes in, lines up 6 plates on each side, reps out ten, and leaves.... That was it..... Wham. Bam. Thank you ma'am. I felt like such a weakling and almost called it a day to go home and lick my wounds.
My favorite lift is hang cleans though. For some reason I get excited for hang cleans.
Lifting thread would be key. would like to get input and advice because after football (been out of college for two years) i kind of got away from the lifting scene. Just starting to get back into it, more for toning and cardio, and could use a centralized thread to ask some questions.
Still, Bosa is a freak man, 17 years old!!!??? excited to see this kid play.
@BuckeyeForLife20... agreed. who was our last DOMINANT sack artist type player? Vernon Gholston? I mean we have had some first round picks obviously like Cameron Heyward but not a player of this caliber that I can recall. Maybe Will Smith?
On a side note, clever name if it means what I think it does. Take out the Life and u get For-20 haha thats not really my thing but definitely got a laugh out of it.
Half squats or not, absolutely rediculous!!! Kid is a beast! Wish he were on campus for this year, gonna be hard waiting to watch him suit up!!!!!
How does this stuff work with a commit? How much workout stuff is handed down to him from Columbus at this point?
I started a topic on the above information if anybody is interested. If someone else would like to do something different I can break mine down. Just wanted to contribute.

BTW, at no time in my life could I ever do a standing back flip from firm ground, accept that one time in 9th grade when I got blind sided setting up a wall for a return.

Not sure when the coaches can "offically" give the recruits training packets and info to be prepared for the camps, etc. I would think the day after they graduate its all fair game. I do know that they get a big package concerning a training routine to prepare them, I just don't know when. Hopefully somebody else can answer b/c I'm curious as well.

I have heard recruits give media examples of things that they are going to do to prepare for college life. They have commented in words to this effect "Coach Meyer has given my coach things for me to do to improve on this that or the other" I don't know if this is workouts or drills or what have you.

OL Tommy Brown was in my graduating class, and all sports use the same weightroom. Somewhere around the summer before my senior year, an OSU football workout was posted on the weightroom wall. Im not sure whether our football coach got that for him, or it was sent by the administration, but he was on it senior year.
Can't wait to see him playing across from a certain lineman from cleveland in a sunshine and blow jersey. Joey will own him IMO....oh it should be glorious ;-) This kids a beast!√
