So who's the punter we take?

Any guesses? Considering the recent development of no more OG offers until we get a committed punter...? Specialists like that are always intriguing, good ones can be game changing. I know we expressed interest in Jimmy Hutchinson (Auburn commit), but that didn't develop.

Best I can find is a kid named Daniel Carlson out of Colorado Springs. He's listed as a kicker, but may also be a punter (like Hutchinson), so I am not sure, but he shows interest in Ohio State.

EDIT: Not included in Scout's list of top punters, so may just be a kicker.

From Scout's list, regionally, there are punters in Indiana and Tennesee who would be closest to OSU. Otherwise, there are 4 or 5 top prospects from Australia, which I suppose can be explained by the large number of punts integrated into Australian-rules football.

Finally, a bunch of recruits from Alabama, Florida, and California, the last two being states that Urban already has his fingerprints on in this class.

please not another running punter (assuming that's what the Australian guys would be, obviously just guessing at this point); I hate that moving punter pocket thing with the 3 deep blockers

When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."

FWIW, Tress borrowed that formation from Urban, so I doubt we have seen the last of it.  I hate the formation, too.

Matt, appreciate the warning. I will brace myself. But I can't argue UFM's special teams success, so I'll just pipe down and let the results speak for themselves.

Well, the one nice thing about the rugby-style kick is that it ideally, the punt is supposed to die where it hits, or at worst bounce back toward the kicking teams (which is good in the red zone).  Plus, it can be an absolute bitch to handle.  Urban values special teams as much as Tressel, I know at Florida he used to coach them personally (not sure if it was for his entire tenure) and put his best guys on there.  I remember reading a quote from Tebow about how bummed he was when Meyer took him off the unit (he wouldn't allow him on once he became the starter).  They eat first at team meals and are generally treated like kings.  I guess my point is that while I'm not used to it, and am not a huge fan of the formation either, Buckeye Nation can at least rest assured knowing we have the best guy this side of Tressel running our special teams.

At least that's how I've learned to stop worrying and to love the rugby punt.

@ Hodge

Agree. Things will be fine on Special Teams with Urban running them. And he will. He likes to coach special teams. I don't know what Tressel's deal was with special teams in 2010 or Fickell's in 2011 but our ST have sucked for 2 years straight. I think Urb will get it turned around.

This is a site that I found when I was looking at potential punters, thought it might be intresting to look at.

http://www.rubiolongsnapping.com/player-profiles/2013.html

My favorite punter is Dean Crozier, the dude is 6'7 and 240 from Australia. He may be able to fill the offensive line need and punter need!

Can't flaunt a degree I don't have...

The point is, why point out something that most people clearly have indicated isn't important (eg perfect grammer and spelling on a football forum with people you don't really know).

UrbzRenewal on 15 Jun 2012 - 1:00pm #

Actually most people that I've encountered find it important. Reddit is the same way; if you can't spell, you'll be mocked and your posts will be buried. It's really not that hard to spell things correctly...

Maybe we can start picking on other useless things and make something that provides no value, if not too terrible. The spacing nonsense was funny too... who cares? If you know what the person said than it was communicated well enough, let's keep it about football.

Run_Fido_Run's picture
Run_Fido_Run on 15 Jun 2012 - 3:02pm #

Steensn, I never point out grammatical or spelling mistakes in comment threads. However, if you're trying to make a point, or have your perspective be understood, it's better to communicate well rather than "well enough." Why make readers have to work harder to decipher your point? Whether the topic is football or world affairs, it's good policy to treat the reader kindly . . .

TheDudeAbides, I'm not, I'm just using it as an example. It's already a pissing contest here anyway on most posts, fwiw; it's way worse here than on Reddit. Look under the Buckshots recently for CFB, it's much more tame there than any fansite...

steensn's picture
steensn on 15 Jun 2012 - 4:23pm #

RUN_FIDO_RUN, clearly there is a subjective line here. I would guess if you look at Bucknuts and read soflabuck's post you would see that there is a line you can cross that matters. "Dual vs Duel" or "grammar vs grammer," because someone didn't proof read at all, is not crossing that line. I don't think anyone malicously pointed that out, just poking fun, but it clearly distracts from the thread because we have stopped talking about punters and started talking about grammir. If you read my post, you will find grammur and spelling mistakes, get over it, it's not that terrible.

If someone wants to make it a big deal at that level, I would consider that person a complete douchebag needing to get a life (which because most of us on this board are weekly->daily checking the status of what a 16 year old kid is going to college we all fit the "get a life" mold :) ). I have left boards because of that level of douchebaggery and wouldn't hesitate to do it again if I find this place is just as bad. Time will tell... I won't lose sleep over it.

Can't we talk about football?

steensn's picture
steensn on 15 Jun 2012 - 4:26pm #

@UrbzRenewal, any place that acts like that is filled with douchbaggery and probably isn't filled with a bunch of successful people. If you can't work with others because they are not perfect, you're probably not a very happy person. Everyone has flaws, a place that focuses on one and ridicules because of it is a place filled with insecure little children hiding their own issues.

I really wish Eleven Warriors would do a voting plus-minus system for comments. but then again there are equally as many @ssholes as good guys so all the annoying comments would probly be "favored" and voted up and the drama-free comments would get voted down.

Look, if people are in favor of giving a long snapper a scholly, I can't see why a punter would be any less worthy. Punters are important to the game and can dictate hwo far the other team has to go for a score. IMO, worth a scholly, but should be guys who have skills to compete at both kicking spots.

BrewstersMillions's picture

To build off of that Steesn, Meyer is a renowned believer in Special Teams. Think about in terms of a long term game plan-First and foremost, despite his makings as an offensive guru, Meyer wants his teams to play stifling defense. Then he wants his teams to control the ball and make plays in space to get points. Couple those things with the ability to force your opponent to play offense from a bad spot and Meyer has exactly what he wants. Punters are important-Not so important that they take a priority but if you have a scholly to use, a punter (if he's among the best available) isn't a waste.

4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off

steensn's picture
steensn on 15 Jun 2012 - 5:29pm #

Let's be clear, I'm sure Meyer takes Jaylin Smith over a punter a the last minute given a choice... but there is a big difference from starting at your own 15-25 compared to your 30-40 if it can be had consistently. There was  good debate though I remember when some coach proposed never punting the ball and always going for it and how that played out statistically. It tended to show less importance for the punter, but I still don't buy it.

When it comes down to a defensive battle between OSU and Michigan in 2 years, I'll go with the team that can stick their opposition inside the 15 to start a drive all day long.
