Recruits Heading South

Often times the thought of midwestern players heading to LSU (Pocic) or others going to Florida or FSU (Levenberry) to play in the sweltering heat is questionable, for lack of a better word. With the impending heat coming this mid-week with temps of 94, 95 and 94 in three consecutive days, think about suiting up in that heat regularly. And that is probably cooler temps for some areas like LSU. Anyone that has ever went through August practices in our temps understand the toll it takes on your body. Acclimating to it for a short time is one thing but to look at going through practically the entire season in these conditions would not be a tempting fate. Understood they are choosing a school, and they will eventually get accustomed to it after a couple years(?), but it isn't a great recruiting tool by any means. Think about it the next few days. I always do when it gets very hot and do not get the attraction. And the SEC hardly ever travels North to get out of the heat as everyone knows. Is this an issue for many in choosing a school or does it matter at all?

I don't believe weather is an issue...Ryan Shazier talks all the time about how he hates the Ohio cold...didn't stop him from coming up....I think recruits looks for the right fit in a school...does it feel like home? How are the relationships with the coaches? does the system fit me? do I fit in with the other players? Will I get a degree/network that will help me after football? will they prepare me for the NFL? What are the facilities/strength staff like?.....if the answer to all of these questions fits what they're looking for-weather won't matter

On top of all this, if a kid wants to go to the NFL and gets drafted by Green Bay will he complain it's too cold?

The heat doesn't play a factor in recruiting at all I don't believe, yea when they get in it for the 1st time they'll probably be wowed by how hot it is, but its something they'll quickly get accustomed to not really a big deal at all, I've played, and practiced in the Alabama heat after experiecing the Ohio cold, and I'd much rather practice/play in the heat then the cold. If I was deciding on a university to attend, weather would hardly be a factor.

Always been interested in if it was indeed a factor. As far as cold/hot goes, it is much, much easier to put on more clothing/layers to get warm and improve your situation than it is to get cooler in the sweltering heat. Which in a football setting, good luck with that. Your are definitely right on all points Alex, but with 17 year olds looking at it, it has to have some influence in some cases. High school players complain incessantly about August practices due to heat.

I have never heard of a HS or college player dying from hypothermia practicing in cold weather.

Joe Bosa was in town for spring game weekend, and those of us who were there or in town remember how gross and cold it was for the game and the rest of the weekend. It just depends in a kid's mindset. Summer

I think it does play a role for some players and it does not for others.  You can't make blanket statements saying that it absolutely does not because we have pulled a few players from the south.  I do not think someone would say it is too cold, I don't want to play if I get drafted by Green Bay but free agents in the NFL, MLB, and NBA have picked towns and have been open about weather playing a factor in the decision.

Fit within the school and the system definitely carry more weight but there is a reason that I moved to Phoenix just like there might be a reason everyone once in a while for a kid to pick the south rather than the north.

I agree with Alex.

Fortmeyer has a point, though, in that too many people make the opposite assumption: that kids place a high premium on playing in tropical or near-tropical climates, when a). there are so many other variables at play, including several that figure to be more important to kids than weather; b). all other factors being equal, it's not clear that a majority of kids would prefer to practice/play in extreme heat versus cold.

It's probably more a coincidence that the place where fball is most popular on a per capita basis  - the Deep South - is also swelteringly hot. 4/5 star kids are not flocking to Arizona, New Mexico, San Diego, UTEP, etc.

While the heat may not play a role directly, there is the indirect effect of the girls.  Sure, I have never heard a recruit say... "I'm looking for the right combination of academics, tradition, coaching, and totally hot babes," but I bet visiting USC or FSU on a warm day provides much more inviting "scenery" then Big Ten schools.

I would be interested in asking guys like Trey DePriest, Jordan Hicks, Aundrey Walker, and Sharrif Floyd if weather had anything to do with their recruitment.  No clue if it did just curious.

Commandhead: When you say the scenery is more inviting at USC or FSU compared to at Big Ten schools, do you mean they're better looking overall, or that the girls down thar' are more likely to be scantily clad?

When I hear people assume that southern/western women are better looking, I wonder if they're part of the tanning club tyranny. IMO, tanning is overrated.

Before I concede your point, I need to see a full-scale scientific study proving that the girls of the south are lovelier than those in BT country, which is not paid for by Hawaiian Tropic(R).

I've never understood the "better weather" reasoning for attending a southern/SEC school.  Unless you're on the coast somehwere, living in the interior south in summer is *miserable*.  I can sit here and honestly say that I am someone that would rather deal with 25F and snow as opposed to 95F and oppressive humidity, and I know I'm a minority side with that line of reasoning.  But I can't imagine late summer workouts in Baton Rouge, LA or Columbia, SC or anywhere in between.  Gross.

Having lived in both Columbia SC and Columbus OH I can tell you that there is no way in hell I'd rather be in SC over OH for football workouts etc.. BUT I did enjoy the overall weather in SC, not as a football player, but as a playa. :-)
