im not as overly concerned as others, furthermore, seeing what ufm did at the end of last yr, whos to say he cant flip kids this yr 2? i dunno i guess alot of it is blind faith, but, even if we miss completely on kids this yr, i would think there should be enough next yr to make up for it.

I dont think you can count on flipping kids year in and year out. Maybe he will get someone too flip, but I wouldnt bet on it. Last year was a bit of an anomaly w/ the Penn St. situation, getting a couple of the ND coaches, and kids who were excited that Urban was coaching again. We've had a pretty bad string of luck lately w/ the decommits, and then continually missing of OLinemen. I expect it to turn around, but I think O line wise this year it will be disappointing on paper, at least compared to the other positions. Thats not to say a unknown kid cant become an All-American, and plenty of 5 star kids bust in college. I think future O-line recruting is going to depend on guys like Mewhort,Linsley,Hall..etc..if those guys have great years and get some NFL hype, that will go along way.
He was able to flip so many kids last year bc he was awarded the OSU job late in the recruiting where the kids have already made their decision. He was not able to recruit these kids until Nov. This year Urban has been able to recruit these kids right off the bat and these kids have been able to see what OSU and Urban has to offer before they make their decision. So I believe it will be harder to flip kids this year.
I don't know that it'll neccessarily be harder to flip kids than any other year. I mean Dodson only flipped away from Ohio State because of the mess left behind when Tressel was fired/resigned. Once Urban came on he was a lock for Ohio State. Granted we did benefit from the Penn State mess too. Maybe there were some conditions where more kids than normal were going to flip, but it's a testament to Meyer that they all decided to come to Ohio State really.
In my opinion, we could see some flips this year when kids actually watch Ohio State play. Offensively, there is a lot of misinformation being handed to the kids by opposing coaches. Once they see what the offense looks like that could change.
Also, just because we're missing out on kids who are great now, doesn't mean there aren't going to be some great O-Linemen in this class that aren't taken. There are a lot of camps left, and these guys have to play their senior year in high school still. There will certainly be some guys turning heads this season that could land an offer and commitments for Urban to get.
You know, I wondered the same thing. The one reason I don't think we'll see as much of what we saw when Meyer first got to town though-When he got Dunn, and Dodson specifically, they were being recruited by Ohio State. Then they were being recruited by Ohio State AND Urban Meyer so their interest in OSU was stoked and ignited by Meyer when it wasn't really otherwise as high under the old regime (Grant it, Dodson was sort of missed).
This year with guys like Pocic and Anzalone, etc they have already faced the full brunt of a Meyer lead recruiting push and still opted to go elsewhere (at least in the case of Pocic). No one is safe for anyone until that kid signs in NSD, but I don't really think we'll see the windfall like we did last year.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
Not panicking, but I have to say, I am a bit disappointed with the lack of dominance on the recruiting trail and the decommitments and 'buckeye leans' going elsewhere. When Meyer got hired, many, including me thought 5-star/top rated players would flock to Ohio State in droves. Obviously have many days until NSD and even more so for the '14 class but I have yet to be really shocked by a Meyer impact... in fact, I think Tressel could have drawn a similar class, if not better, to Meyer's last year and would be ahead of Meyer at this point this year. Perhaps time will tell, but right now, this staff doesnt really have that 'WOW' factor I thought it would have in the recruiting front. I find it very difficult to accept the fact Brady Hoke is somehow more impressive to recruits than Urban Meyer, but its happening.
There is a difference between panicking and being disappointed. We'll have a very good class, but we certainly won't have a dominant class. We've missed out on a lot of the coaches top targets, more than I'm certain most expected, even the coaching staff. That is dissappointing. I think that we'll become more dominant after a great season or two, but for right now OSU is still an unknown.
with all this being said... If tosu doesnt get exactly who they want, do they save the schollies for next yrs ridiculously loaded class or take some shots at 2-3* kids?
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
I think they need to fill all the voids. So definitely need an OT, probably a safety, and at least one more WR. I think they take another tackle, another guard, 2 more WRs, another RB/slot ATH, and maybe a LB. That makes six, which gives us an 18 person class, which is about capacity without attrition. I think if other top targets fall through, the staff will leave it at ~18, and focus on 2014.
These are the players in the 2012 class rated 4* or higher who have already committed to OSU:
Skill players: J Marshall, JT Barrett, E Elliot, M Baugh
DBs: C Burrows, E Woodward
DL: J. Bosa, B Price
OL: E Lisle
I would also be shocked if T Sprinkle and J Thompson don't get upgraded to 4* by LOID.
I really wanted J Smith in this class because of his outstanding athleticism, but the only whiff that has really hurt us so far is Pocic.
@AHH, I agree with you on Thompson, he's shown enough at NFTC camps, and if he has a good season with that added experience and training, he definitely deserves an upgrade. Not sure about Sprinkle as much though, partly because he's a really raw talent, also partly due to services' camp reliance, something he doesn't seem to get into.
You guys need to relax. Yes, Urban is missing on guys but they are guys that Tressel wouldn't have had the nuts to go after. Recruiting is like finding a date...Tressel went after a bunch of 5s and 6s cause he knew they wouldn't say no. Urban is going after 9s and 10s in the hopes that more say yes than no. I think he's done a great job so far
Disagree. Tress routinely had top-10 classes. you don't get that with "5s and 6s". He got 7s and 8s year in and year out, with a couple of local 9s and 10s sprinkled in. Just because Bollman turned some of them into 4s and 5s doesn't diminish that Tressel was a pretty great recruiter in his own way. Different than Urbs, and I agree that everyone should calm down, but let's not forget that Tress's classes steamrolled the BIG for 10 years. How quickly we forget how happy we were with Tress.
When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."
I was never much of a recruiting follower up until Meyer took over. Maybe a handful of times between Bruce, Cooper and Tressel. Mainly because this process was just too emotionally draining for me as a young man. I hated to see top talent (especially Ohioians) choose other schools. As a diehard Buckeye fan I wanted them all to choose us, but as I got older and more mature I realized that not everyone is raised to be Buckeye fans but we're all raised to be winners. With that said...
I agree w/BTALBERT25... I think it'll be a whole new mindset for these kids once they actually see Meyer & tOSU football team on the field!
A popular misconception about JT is that he was a mediocre recruiter whereas by any standard he was one of the best recruiters of his time. Could he lock down the top talent in Ohio? Mo C, T Ginn, D Whitner, B Wells, D Posey, M Adams, and J Simon is a short list of 5* talent from the Buckeye state that became Buckeyes under JT. Could he reel in the big fish from OOS? D. Worthington, L. Grant, TP, E Sabino, JB Shugarts, M Brewster, D Bell were all highly recruited OOS 5* that came to Columbus under JT. S Holmes, C Heyward, B Rolle were all highly recruited 4* who had no tie to the Buckeyes beyond JT. Could he find the diamond in the rough that others missed? All of the following were 3* or less: N Mangold, V Gholston, Malcolm Jenkins, A Youbouty, Chimdi Chekwa, B Roby, J Hankins, J Laurinitis, and yes, AJ Hawk was a 3*. This list is partial and anyone who wants to add to it feel free, but the point should be clear. JT could recruit with the best of them, including Urban Meyer.
Tressel wasnt scared to go after recruits at all...he won the Pryor sweepstakes, and more importantly kept nearly all of the best Ohio talent at home...I would rather land the top guys in our own state then whiff on a guy from Illinois or Pennsylvania as has been the case thus far in the 2013 class...I think our class right now is great but seems like every other day there is an update on this site with a top recruit choosing to go elsewhere or a former buckeye 'lean' like Heuerman surprising people and not picking Ohio State...may be wrong, but I don't remember this happening this often when Tressel ran the show
I guess I need to clarify. I'm assuming this thread was started to discuss OL recruiting and that's what I was referring to. No one in their right mind would question Urban's defensive or skill position recruits...or Tressel for that matter. I was referring to the fact we could have 5-6 2013 OL guys if Urban wanted to settle like I believe Tressel did. But instead he is going after the best
I'll take development over recruiting. A lot of Tressel's OL recruits were highly rated and didn't produce like they were predicted to due to lack of proper development, while Wisconsin picked up average classes and turned those OLs into monsters.
You can see the difference when you look at some of the underperforming offensive guys and the overacheiving defensive recruits over the years, that development means as much if not more than just getting the best talent.
Once again, JT went after the best --including along the OL-- and often got them. From where are you getting this idea that he didn't? Remeber Seantrell Henderson? He was the top rated recruit in the country at any position, and JT went after him hard --likely at the expense of lower rated in-state recruits. We lost that battle, but certainly JT had "the nuts" to fight it.
I'll take development AND recruiting... why settle for anything less?
Good point, but this is in the scope of "missing out on top prospects". Not speaking generally, I'm ok with missing on a guy like Pocic if a Meadows or someone lower rated has access to the proper development.
