Gibson announcement

I hope this guy is still the "Buckeye lock" that he has been rumored to be. Recently, all these "Buckeye locks and leans" have chosen elsewhere, and I really hope that Shelton doesn't go elsewhere either.... Does anyone know where he stands as of now? Supposedly he will be announcing on June 20th. Let's hope this guy commits to the Buckeyes and gets the ball rolling again on recruiting. For all those who think that this guy isn't good enough, you're crazy. We need to fill positions like WR and OL, and Shelton is a consensus 4-star who is unanimously ranked the top WR in Ohio. He also is nationally a top 20 WR. Let's hope this guy becomes a Buckeye.

I would love to see Gibson in Scarlet & Gray; I fully expect him to be as well.

That's good, because this guy has serious speed and other than OL, WR is our second most-needed position.

People absolutely go to a school because of the coaching staff... Not sure why you think otherwise. I would say that more recruits pick OSU because of the coaches than because it's OSU. Sometimes people need to remove the scarlet tinted glasses

I have this same argument with Kentucky Basketball fans all the time.  Wall, Cousins, Davis, Gilchrest, and Lamb didn't care that they went to Kentucky, they care that they played for Calipari and are going to the NBA.  The name on the front of the jersey isn't that important and fans need to wrap their heads around that.

ABSOLUTELY people want to come for a certain coach.  Jim Tressel was able to land certain players because of the kind of man he was.  Urban Meyer is able to land top level talent because he has put some many guys in the NFL.  Not only did they make it there, they've done very well.  For goodness sake he made Alex Smith and Tim Tebow First round picks.

Albert, you might be stretching the point too far. Many players do care about the name on the front of the jersey, the school, the town in which the school is located, etc.

Sure, playing for a certain coach is a high priority, but not the only priority. Calipari recruited well at Memphis; but he's recruiting even better at UK. Bobby Knight recruited poorly at Tex Tech. Urbz recruited better at Florida than he did at Utah or Bowling Green. John Cooper recruited well at Ohio State, but it's debatable how many kids were just dying to be under his tutelage.

We'll need him to beat Purdue in 2014.

Alabama has been landing top ranked recruiting classes, and what has it done for them ... 2 Championships, and plenty of NFL draft picks ... Simply goes to show TALENT, and COACHING go hand, and hand ... Texas can't get right because they can't find a QB ... I think FSU's problem is their coaching ....

@FIDO - For what it's worth, I think Cooper was probably one of the first collegiate coaches to really embrace what BTALBERT is talking about.  Cooper used the superb facilities and brand recognition of Ohio State to recruit on a national level that really hadn't been done by Hayes or Bruce.  He turned Ohio State into a veritable "NFL Academy"; and in my opinion that's the same tradition a lot of coaches today uphold and it's that brand that's really sold to recruits.  Sure there are other factors; but more than anything else, players don't normally commit to a school, they commit to a coach.  And that's precisely the reason that a lot of media pundits have been up in arms about the liquidity of coaches between jobs while the recruits that commit to them are very constrained once they've chosen their school.

The real truth of the matter lies somewhere in the middle, but remember the lack of parity in the NCAA.  The richest programs have the best facilities, can afford the best coaches, have the best "brands", recruit the best players, and ultimately win the most games and make the most money.  It's really hard for upstarts to work their way into the elite, hence the cyclical rates of most mediocre teams' fortunes compared to the relative consistency enjoyed by the elite.  Furthermore, those upstarts' cycles of greatness are typically due to exceptional coaching staffs and begin to wane when those staffs begin to leave for better pastures.

Well Fido,

Certainly if you go to UK and play for Cal you are going to get more exposure just because of the attention the high profile programs get.  If Kentucky is good, most of their games are going to land on a national broadcast.  So, in that respect perhaps so.  I guess I would just say 5 years ago, Anthony Davis wasn't a kid saying man I'm going to be a wildcat.

That's my point.  Sure kids do grow up wanting to be Buckeyes and some of them land in Columbus, but I don't think Noah Spence or Woodard grew up always having the dream of playing for Ohio State. They are here for Meyer and likely wouldn't have been here if Tressel were coaching the team.

Being Ohio State or Kentucky certainly doesn't hurt matters any.  You know you're going to have a lot of national attention, the finest facilities, and a chance at getting to the next level.  I just don't think there are too many "Rudy's" out there anymore.  I also, am fine with those kind of guys getting passed over for elite national talent.

Hodge: I don't disagree with anything you said; I just thought Albert was stretching the point too far. Where does the NFL factory end and the university infrastructure begin? Also, the richest programs with the best facilities not only can afford the best coaches; they make those coaches a little better by virtue of the association. Obviously, that only goes so far, as the likes of John Malkovich at Texas or John Blake at Oklahoma attest. No question, having a great coach is the highest priority for the athletic department and the recruit. But Urbz didn't recruit many 5-stars to Utah.

Albert: you're response to me is more nuanced than your previous comment at 4:09 pm. Now, we're pretty much in agreement.

@BTALBERT  - Not to split hairs or anything (I almost completely agree with your point), but Woodard was about as Buckeye as they come.  Pretty sure he mentioned countless times that he grew up a big fan.

As someone, probably Hodge said, the truth is in the middle. The university helps, but the coach is more important in my opinion. Why did Fickell struggle to get big names? Why did Kalis bounce after Tressel left? Why wasn't Noah Spence considering us before Urban was hired (I don't think he had an offer lol but you get the point)

@OHIOTHOMAS, I think he is considered by all to be a lean, and has even been rumored to be a silent commit waiting until his mother's birthday to release it

Yea that's what I've been hearing for some time, but then about 2-4 weeks ago, I remembered hearing that he is taking a lot of interest in some school (can't remember) and that they could become a serious contender.

First player Coach Meyer offered.

Shelton, one other WR and OSU is good to go for 2013.
