Caleb Henderson

According to @rivalsmike he could commit at camp if offered. Stud 2014 QB out of Virginia. He's ranked 30 on the 247 list for 2014, the #2 Pro-Style QB.

And there's this from April: http://www.elevenwarriors.com/2012/04/catching-up-with-caleb-henderson

It will be interesting to see if OSU offers him, with Crest, Kizer, Barker all options for 2014.

Personally, his highlight tape on Hudl (linked in the 11W article), is pretty damn good for a sophomore. I would take him as a leader of the class...sounds like he really wants to go to OSU (and is an elite player).

He has an absolute cannon, I would think the kid would only have to show some legs to get the offer. 540 yds rushing his sophomore season, you have to think he can run the spread AND fire the ball, which is the kind of guy I'd like to see pull in recievers

Agreed. And he's only going to get bigger and stronger. Could be Tebow-esque in stature, but with a better arm.

I think he gets an offer.

Way better arm I'd say, seeing as Tebow maxes out at 35 yards, and still can't hit recievers with consistency, even in the NFL. Looking back at the underclassmen camp lineup, it's pretty crazy, especially with QBs. With Barker, Crest, Kizer, Allen, and Henderson all competing for the offer, you know the staff will be able to decide which ones they like the best.

He also plays some good competition; Northern VA is very good. A few of the schools Henderson played against on film went deep into the VA state playoffs.

The state of VA for the 2014 class is loaded, analysts are saying maybe the strongest state of the year

Did he transfer to Lake Braddock? LB Coach Poythress has really built the program up into a perennial powerhouse in Northern Virginia, in a very competitive district.

Yes he plays for Lake Braddock, I believe.

Is it silly to worry about pro-style QBs in Urban's offense? Alex Smith was pro style, but John Brantley was such a failure

I think a mobile pro-style fits the spread well, and can actually make it more dangerous since the spread relies on weapons in the slot, and wide.

Texas Tech ran the spread with Grahm Harrell(sp) quite succesfully and he wasn't very mobile.

Crest isn't agreed upon by all sites as far as position. His tape shows that he can do things with his arm and his legs, and he looks like a dual-threat to me, but 247 has him listed as pro-style.

Different spread BJ. I think Ross has some really good articles on it, but Meyer likes the read-option spread while Tech uses the 5-wide passing spread. The mobile quarterback in Meyer's spread is much more important.

It could just be a reflection of Brantley not being very good and not Meyer's inability to adapt to a slower quarterback... It does look like Henderson has some wheels from the tape though.

@DMCDOUGAL24 I am sure that Meyer will be watching him closely when he camps to see if he fits what he wants and if Meyer wants him, I want him (especially at the QB position). We will probably take 2 QB's in the 2014 class and can fill the other spot with a true dual-threat QB.

Henderson, Kizer and Barker will all be at camp together, should be interesting to see who gets offered there.

I see some dual threat qualities in this kid, I hope he gets an offer looks plenty fast enough, and his a nice throwing motion. If he truly runs a 4.7 now as a sophomore there is a good chance he could be either low 4.6, or 4.5 if not faster, he runs the read option pretty well too, of course he isn't an electrifying runner in the open field, but his passing abilities more then make up for it. As I stated above I hope he gets an offer, as I don't think you turn down "elite" kids that want to be a part of your program.

Conroy's picture

He can't burn like Miller or Pryor, but Henderson isn't a statue like Brantley (Who was also a straight bust).

buck-I.8's picture
buck-I.8 on 17 Jun 2012 - 4:56pm #

@Conroy, exactly. Brantley was a pure drop-back pocket passer, which is not synonymous with "pro-style", inherently. You can be listed as a pro-style passer but still be able to run the spread with certain tools. Brantley had none of those tools

Pro style quarterback, dual threat, pocession receiver, cover corner, pass rushing specialist, hybrid lb, hard hitting safety... idc what u call em can the dude play the position or not? Who cares what offense we run, matt leinart did ok with reggie bush. He wud have succeeded in this offense as well. Take the best guy willing to come here.

Krenzel could move, I would say he was a Pro style QB  but could get it done with his legs.

The point is, people directly associate "dual-threat" with "spread offense", and though there is a correlation, the two are not synonymous

DMcDougal24's picture
DMcDougal24 on 17 Jun 2012 - 10:52pm #

You think that Matt Leinart could have played in a Florida or Oregon-type offense? Because I certainly don't.

The offense matters and the quarterback matters. If you have a good coach, he adapts the offense to fit the quarterback. If you have a good quarterback, he adapts his play to fit the playbook. In Urban's offense, a pure pocket passer will not work without Urban changing his playbook and his offensive philosophy. Read-option turns into increased play action or just running a Texas Tech spread. That is the difference between a spread offense and a pro-style offense.

Caleb Henderson obviously has the wheels to effectively run Urban's offense. But make no mistake, while UFM's teams have put up solid passing numbers his playbook is centered around the run.

Henderson already will be playing in a good district this coming season, but he may be playing in the best his senior year. There is talk about Lake Braddock moving from the Patriot to the Concorde District; the Concorde is by far the best football district in Northern VA, they regularly contribute state champions. If Henderson has the chance to compete there and succeeds, I definitely want him.

The recruiting service says that he's a pro-style quarterback, but if you watch the film, you'll see that he's more than talented enough for the spread. And he wants to be a Buckeye. That's more than enough to convince me.

I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.

ShadyBuckeye's picture
ShadyBuckeye on 17 Jun 2012 - 11:13pm #

Yup that's exactly what I said, leinart would be running options, throwing jump-passes and rushing the ball 15 times a game. Obviously meyer is smart enough to change his playbook to fit his personnel, that's what he would've done with a talent like leinart. I didn't think I had to be so specific.

Alex Smith= case and point. Not exactly a dual threat qb, but he could use his feet to get the first down. Just like Krenzel could and Henderson can. Meyer can adapt.

I actually lived in Utah during Urban's tenure, and that's when I got into college football (to this day, Utah is my second favorite CFB team behind OSU), and trust me, Alex Smith could move. He was a lot faster than people gave him credit for. In his last year at Utah, he ran for 650+ yards and 10 touchdowns.

Henderson will be a good quarterback. Hopefully he ends up in Scarlet and Gray. I see a lot of Alex Smith in both him and Drew Barker.

I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
