Well according to Brian Bennett, it will not happen. Saw this posted as the #1 story on ESPIN's college football page and wanted to see what everyone had to say.

The link didn't include the headline which reads " As Good As It Gets? Four seasons have passed without the Big Ten team reaching the BCS title game. Is the Rose Bowl the league's ceiling?"

Brian Bennett lives in SEC country, of course he would say that...

just goes to show how terrible the browns' scouting is...

I'm with you Bucks. Sure would be sweet revenge to get there.
I've been sitting back reading all the posts about ESPN's bias against us and the B1G. I thought I was on the side of "We're just too fanatical and reading too much into this". But after seeing this headline, I think I may have jumped to the other side. Why would you hire a guy that hates the B1G to write a blog about it?
I didn't read the article, but that's absurd. So, I guess Urban just decided to crap out all of the sudden? Hell, even scUM is doing well atm. I'm glad Bennett can see the future, because he sure as hell can't report.
From 1981 to 1992, the exact same question could have been asked about the SEC. These things are cyclical. There will be another decade where the SEC can't win a thing. There will be times the B1G is unstoppable, and the PAC-however many, and Texas.
Its down now, but there is a reason OSU, Michigan, Nebraska, and Penn State are among the winningest programs ever. Their down periods are always temporary, they just happen to coincide right now.
Actually not a bad article once you get past the beginning. Decent insight into the conference and fairly complimentary.

It's really our own fault the SEC is looked at the way it is... If we win in '06 ( a team that I believe would have won if focused goin in like the '02 team) & in '07 (with a bit of an over achieving, inexperienced squad) then the whole scenery changes... that would have a given us 3 NC in 6 years.
People who use words like "never" and "forever" should automatically be discounted as mentally feeble and unimaginative.

I think w/our improved coaching across the board, not just offensively, along w/a renewed focus on recruiting GREAT talent ... We'll be back in the picture of the National Championship pretty soon ... I think our defense is going to be the best in the B10 this year ... and our offense is going to be very respectable ... 2013, I think we'll have a "SEC Caliber defense", and a "Big 12/Pac 10 offense" ... and we'll be BEATING DOWN that BCS Championship door once again!
@ Mastermind I agree completely. People think their statements carry more weight when they say things like that, but it actually makes them seem less intelligent for being so ignorant to the possibilities.
Screw that ginger. How he got hired to write about the B1G us beyond me.

If you read the article it's in regards to THIS year. And he may be right, we really don't have a Nat Title caliber team in the B10 this year. Now Bennett himself is another story...he's just a negative writer in general. He used to be the BE blogger but was reassigned last year. Read some of his old tuff, he's just not a happy person.
Will the
Big TenACC ever win another national title? Fixed that for you Mr. Bennett. Troll on!The B1G has been much closer to a National Title in recent years than people think.
- 2003... If OSU beats Michigan, they're in. USC had one loss to an unranked team, LSU had a loss to an unranked team at home, and OSU's loss was at night by one score in Camp Randall. OSU also had the benefit of being the reigning national champ, so the argument would be that given the records being the same, OSU is deserving until someone knocks them off.
- 2005.. If OSU beats Texas, OSU is in. There would have been three 1-loss teams, and OSU would have had the more forgiveable loss in Happy Valley, as well as the best non-conference win (over Texas).
- 2006 and 2007... B1G has a team in the title game. When year was an absolute meltdown, the other was a mistake-prone "we beat ourselves" sort of game.
- 2008 Penn State was 1 second from going to the MNC game. And I think Penn State would have had a very good shot against Tebow's gators. Very tough, very physical in the trenches, and arguably the best linebecking corps in the country that year. Probably would have been one of those 9-6 games.
- 2010 Buckeyes were one bad quarter from the MNC game (1st quarter in Madison). They most assuredly would have finished above Oregon in the BCS standings (voters would have remembered how the Buckeyes defense shut down Oregon's offense in the 2010 Rose Bowl). I believe OSU would have matched up very well with Auburn that year.
- 2011 Wisconsin was two fluke plays from meeting LSU int he MNC game. And as I contend, Wisconsin matched up very well with LSU.
So really, 2004 and 2009 were the only years were the B1G didn't have a team that could have wont he national title if a few plays had turned out differently.
Yes, eventually the B1G will win a national title. I don't believe it will ever come from Penn State, and I'm not sure Nebraska is really all that close either. It's going to come from Ohio State or Michigan. I still think Michigan is a few years away from seriously contending. I'm looking to 2014. If, and this is a really big if, Ohio State's current recruits pan out and they are as good as advertised I see an Ohio State national title run in 2014.
Granted, there are SOOOOOO many things that can happen between now and then which could impact this. I just see a good opportunity then. The defense should be Elite. Braxton will be a senior. Guys like Marshall will have a year under their belts too. We need the "ifs" to pan out of course, but they should be primed for quite a run come 2014.
Will someone please point out where it says the B10 will never win another title. I haven't seen ANYTHING that implies the B10 won't win another title at some point. The article and the headlines I have seen all relate to this year...and the writer is likely correct about this. The quote "is the Rose Bowl the league's ceiling" is in relation to this season. I didn't see anything that implied anything about future seasons.
I hate misleading headlines. The article is basically a preview of 2012, stating that every major player in the conference has flaws, and that this conference is so deep that nobody is likely to make it through unscathed. I can certainly agree that this season, you won't see a B1G team in the MNC game, because 6-2 in conference play may be good enough to get you to Indy, and obviously that won't be good enough to get you to Miami. I don't think even ESPN is that crazy to suggest no more national titles ever for the B1G, regardless of how much they may or may not hate us and our conference.
Class of 2010.
That's earth shattering stuff right there. No national title for the B1G in 2012. Do people get paid to write that stuff. If that's the case then I could be a writer. I completely agree with that. There's not a team with a prayer of winning it all from the B1G.
THIS. The headline to this thread is misleading.
