Quick Bits 5/20 (Trubisky to UNC)

  • John Burroughs star Ezekiel Elliott showed he was ready for state by winning the 300 hurdles and 100 dash in personal record times of 37:52 and 11.04, respectively, and winning the 110 hurdles in 14.19.

"It was great to PR in two events and break the school records again," Elliott said.

  • Trinity's James Quick was the other record-setter, winning the 200 in a time (20.94 seconds) that created the buzz of the day.

The victory capped a sensational junior year for Quick, who also helped Trinity win state titles in football and basketball.

"This is what every young guy wants to happen to them in life," he said. "I'm fortunate enough to have it happen to me."

Ohio's best RB in 2014? (photo per westchesterbuzz.com)
With Ezekiel Elliott already committed to the 2013 class, leaving only one spot left for a running back in the class (2013), it's time to start looking ahead to potential target for the class of 2014. One of the first names that has emerged on the 2014 recruiting radar is Lakota East (Middletown, Ohio) running back Mikel Horton. Mikel recently attended Nike's NFTC camp in Columbus where he was one of the top performers, which has led to increased interest from colleges. Mikel plans on going to a couple of camps this summer, and if he performs well at these camps, he could start to "blow up" (get a lot of offers). I talked with Mikel about the places he has visited thus far, where he plans to camp, and much more. I will be keeping in touch with Mikel throughout his recruitment; keep checking back for future updates on this rising running back prospect.

How did your sophomore season go?

I had a good season, but I could have done better. We had a lot of running backs splitting carries and I ended up getting the most. Next year, I will likely be the feature back in our offense.

How's recruiting going for you? Who is expressing interest and which schools would you like to hear from?

It's going real well, I have a lot of schools talking to me. I am receiving interests from Ohio State, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Boston College and would like to hear from Alabama and Georgia.

Who is your contact at Ohio State? What is he telling you?

I have a good relationship with Ohio State. My contact is Coach Coombs; we speak every Monday and are in the process of building a good relationship.

Do you think you're close to receiving an offer from Ohio State?

I feel Ohio State will offer soon, if I perform well at their camp on I think June 22nd. It would be a huge offer for me to get.

Where do you plan on camping this summer?

Wisconsin, Ohio State, Cincinnati, and Hopefully Alabama. There's also a camp in Dallas that I may attend.

Which schools have you had the chance to visit so far? How did they go?

I have visited Cincinnati and Ohio State. Both visits went well, I got to see the facilities, football field, meetings, and practices.

Which schools would you like to visit (or re-visit) at some point in the recruiting process?

I would like to make it to Ohio State, Cincinnati, Alabama, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Michigan State.

Which schools stand out right now?

Ohio State, Notre Dame, Alabama, Michigan State, and Michigan.

When would you choose your school?

I would like to make my decision sooner, rather than later because I would like to enroll in school early. I have recently been doing a lot of research on the schools that have expressed interest in me.

What are the strongest aspects of your game?

My change of direction, strength, and ability to stay up after getting hit.

What would you most like to improve?

I would love to improve my speed and my pass blocking.

What goals do you have for your junior season?

My goal is to become a better leader and make it as far as possible in the playoffs.

Mark Andrews, hailing from Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale (AZ) is one of the most recent standout wide receivers to emerge on the Buckeyes' radar. Standing at 6'6", 225 pounds, Andrews provides a huge target to throw two, and is the reason some believe Andrews will eventually have to make the switch to tight end, which he told me he would consider. However, right now, I view Mark as more of a receiver as by watching his highlights, he seems to have the necessary to speed to stick at receiver at the college level. As for Ohio State, Mark is definitely interested. Keep reading to discover how close Mark is to picking up an offer from Ohio State and also to find out more about Mark's game. Keep checking back for updates on this standout wide receiver throughout his recruitment.

How did your sophomore season go?

It went pretty well. I had 1058 yards receiving, 58 catches, and caught 10 touchdowns. Also my team went 6-4.

How's recruiting going for you? Who has offered and who is expressing interest?

It's going pretty well. Arizona State, Arizona, Oregon State, Michigan, and UCLA have offered. Schools expressing interest are Missouri, Nebraska, Oregon, and Ohio State. Ohio State will likely offer me if I camp there this summer.

Who's your contact at Ohio State? What's he telling you?

Coach Herman. He really likes the way I play and really want me to visit this summer to get the chance to meet Coach Meyer.

Where do you plan on visiting/camping this summer? Ohio State a possibility?

I have a very hectic summer, Ohio State is a possibility, but I'm not sure yet, it's a long trip to make. I should at least be able to make it to Arizona and Arizona State over the summer, but I'm just not sure after that.

Do any schools stand out to you right now?

My dream school growing up was Oklahoma, that's the team I rooted for growing up, however they have only expressed a little interest so far.

When would you like to make a decision?

I have no idea; I would just like to keep my option open.

What will be the biggest factors in your decision?

I'm really big on academics, which would probably be the biggest one. Also I need to go somewhere that I fit and feel at home.

What are the strongest aspects of your game?

I would have to say my ability to use my height to an advantage and also my speed.

What would you most like to improve?

I would like to improve my basic fundamentals because I didn't start playing football until my freshmen year, so I'm relatively new to the sport.

Would you consider yourself a wide receiver or tight end?

I definitely consider myself to be a wide receiver; I have never played tight end in my life. I would consider tight end in college, but I definitely prefer being a receiver.

What do you enjoy doing off the field?

I'm a family kind of gut. I spend most of my free time hanging out with my family and friends.

Would goals do you have for your junior season?

I would like to become a more complete player and take nothing for granted personally. I would also like to help my team improve from last year.

Camping at Ohio State? (per Jeb's twitter)
The Buckeyes' will likely be looking to add a tight end in 2014 class and the top target may just be Charlotte (NC) TE Jeb Blazevich. Jeb has recently seen his recruitment "blown up" as he now holds offers from Ohio State, LSU, Virginia, Clemson, Ole Miss, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, and Duke, along with interest from a couple other top schools, Oregon and Clemson. Standing at 6'4", 235 pounds, Jeb already has the ideal frame for a tight end, and he's only a sophomore in high school. Jeb is nowhere close to a decision as of now, but by offering early, the Buckeyes are definitely in the race to land him. I will be keeping in touch with Jeb throughout his recruitment, make sure to check back for more updates on this standout 2014 tight end prospect.

How did your sophomore season go?

It went pretty well I caught 32 passes for 500 yards and 6 touchdowns. Nothing great, but I caught almost everything thrown to me. I also got to play both ways. It was a good season, but I definitely feel I can do better.

How's recruiting going for you right now?

It's gone really well so far. I picked up my first offer back in February, and it has just picked recently up and went crazy. I didn't expect this; I'm so glad I have the right people in my life to keep me grounded and give my wisdom.

Where have you visited thus far? How did the visits go?

I've only been to North Carolina, Duke, Clemson, and South Carolina so far. All the visits went really well, it was cool to check out what the different campuses had to offer.

Where are you camping this summer?

My father and I are focusing on five camps right now. South Carolina, Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia, and LSU.

What do you look forward to seeing at Ohio State?

I'm looking forward to seeing both the campus and the football side of Ohio State. I'd mostly like to look around town and check out the weight room plus other facilities. I've never been to Ohio so I'm really looking forward to the experience.

Ohio State recently offered. How did that go down?

Coach Smith stopped by my school and left a card with his number so I could give him a call. I got a hold of him and we had a really good conversation. At the end he told me that he and the other coaches really wanted me to play at Ohio State. I was really excited and so was my dad.

Do any schools stand out to you at this point?

We've been trying to narrow it down, but I can't say I have any leaders; I've had trouble cutting my list.

Do you have a timetable for your decision?

I would like to do it as soon as possible, as I would like to be committed before my senior year, so I can shift my focus all to football for my senior season.

What will be the biggest factors in your decision?

Really the integrity of the coaches is a big thing for me, education of course, tradition, and winning as well. Also a place you feel comfortable, because you only play x amount of game a year, so I place I'd enjoy in the off-season.

What are the strongest aspects of your game?

I have a knack for catching the ball, people have always said I have good hands; I almost never drop a pass.

What would you most like to improve?

All fundamentals, blocking, and creating mismatches.

What goals do you have for your junior season?

My only goal is to win the ring, that's the thing I need, and I only have two year left to work hard and earn it.

Lakota East isn't in Middletown, it's in Liberty Twp. But whatever. Kinda cool to see a kid from my high school getting recruited by my college.

I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.

I work in Trenton which is right there. It is considered Middletown. Part of it is Lakota School District and part is Middletown. Other than property taxes there isn't much of a difference. Liberty is a bit nicer tho lol. Middletown has some messed up people.

There's nothing that cleanses your soul like getting the hell kicked out of you.

The Liberty Twp/West Chester area is SO much different than Middletown. Haha. But I guess it's because Liberty Twp. won't become a city for tax reasons, so that's probably why East is listed as Middletown. Just something that got on my nerves growing up.

I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
