"You're pissed because we went after a committed guy? Guess what, we got 9 guys who better go do it again," said Meyer. "Do it a little harder next time."
unzrenewal, that recruiting effort (while excellent) was on players more local and with more stated interest in OSU. Tunsil seems like he'll stay in SEC country.
Yeah - right after a major change and a huge scandal at Penn State shattered their recruiting class. Also - I don't know the answer to this one, but did Spence, Washington, Schutt, Dodson, Decker, Reeves, Williams, Perkins, and O'Connor have OSU offers before Urban got to Columbus?
Urban is a great recruiter, but he's way behind on Tunsil - who has also long been thought to be staying in the South.
Without panicing and everyone jumping on me for "panicing", this does hurt whether we want to admit it or not. Evan Lisle is a GREAT o-line prospect and we had a nice haul with Dodson, Decker, and O'connor, however this still hurts. I like what someone said earlier, you would think with Urban being the coach, Ed Warriner having a great track record from his time at Notre Dame, and our lack of O-line depth we would have O'line recruits salivating to come here. Okay, going to ask a question, and please noone jump on me for asking, but does anyone have any thoughts on this may have to do with Urban's lack of a perceived "ground and pound" and "3 yards and a cloud of dust" offense (whether justified or not)?
@ohioborn - So you are saying MAY is too late to turn up the heat on a recruit when signing day is in FEB? Have you seen how often some of these kids flip? I'm not saying we have a good shot with Tunsil, but that is just asinine if you truely think that.
"You're pissed because we went after a committed guy? Guess what, we got 9 guys who better go do it again," said Meyer. "Do it a little harder next time."
I'm saying MAY might be a little too late to start to turn ON the heat with a top-10 recruit who many believe is an absolute lock to stay in the South.
I'm referring specifically to Tunsil, not any other recruit.
For a moment it seemed like this recruiting class would be number 1 in the country, all the great players we already have in addition to Anzalone, Lewis Neal... Pocic was a "lock" (can we stop using that word now?.) but I think we can all agree Urban Meyer knows what he's doing. Of course I wanted Pocic badly as well but by the time this class is done there will be atleast 2 players that Urbie ends up getting that we thought either we didnt have a shot with or werent even on the OSU radar. He's one of the smartest coaches Ive seen, he knows our O-Line needs alot of improvement.
I agree in principle that it may be being to late to turn the heat up on some prospects who we haven't previously been after. However, there is still 8 months until national signing day and truly anything can happen from now until then. That said what will be very interesting to see what affect friday night lights has on this class and the 2014 class. While at Florida some of Urbans biggest and most unexpected pulls occurred as result of that Friday Night Lights camp. While I have no idea about the Tunsil chance, and probably agree they are slim to none, but if you can get a guy like that up to FNL very unexpected things could happen. Also remember that kids still have unofficial visits to take. I know Spence was thought to be a heavy Penn State lean and sure the controversy probably played a role in coming to OSU, but he said it was his visit to Columbus that actually convinced him to make the switch. So getting any prospect on campus can be huge, and once there Urban knows how handle it.
All that said this sucks I was hoping he would be in this class. I hope we get some good recruiting news soon.
Well I am itching ever so closer to the "Panic" button. Why because we're missing on the guys there were supposed to be "Locks", and we've had 2 de-commits. At this point I'm going to have to say I'm a little be worried.
I have to be honest, I like it that we have such diehard fans that stuff like this generates panic. Yes we would have a class of 55 guys if we got commits from all of the 4/5 stars we offered, so we HAVE to miss on some. But that doesn't mean we aren't entitled to a freak out after a tough 3 week stretch (2 decommits, a few commit elsewheres). And given the less than stellar reviews about our oline depth, any miss is a big miss. So I say panic away! It's who we (OSU fans) are; just embrace it.
If recruits are thinking long term, don't they want to be in a pro style system for 3-4 years? No matter what Urban says, our attack is not prepping them (at least in style) for the NFL. Unless the Jets are drafting olinemen for Tebowball, that is. The weight room might be, and the techniques might be, but the style of play isn't. Maybe that doesn't matter as much as I think it should, guess I don't know.
When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."
@OUSBIAS ... I would have to disagree with you, because in football run blocking, and pass blocking are the same no matter what type of offense you run Florida has produced some VERY nice OL over the past couple of years ... The "spread" only hurts the QB supposedly ... but look at Alex Smith, and ever more look at Cam Newton.
Dammit, we are absolutely WHIFFING on our o- line targets. This is rediculous. Stop saying urban is this magical recruiter. He does not get anyone he wants. We are so desperate for linemen that it makes you wonder what the hell the coaching staff is doing. #1 class my ass...
You can wonder what the coaching staff is doing...obviously they've been recruiting these OL prospects. Just because we didn't get them does t mean the staff screwed up at all. It means the kid wanted to go somewhere else than OSU. Don't put the decision of a 16/17 year old on the coaching staff if we recruited him hard
I don't know about you guys, but I'm going to wait until much closer to National Signing Day before I freak out. I invite you to join me in this. There is till a lot of time left.
OUR PETS HEADS ARE FALLING OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I kid and totally agree we wont get everyone, this has for sure been a rough stretch for recruiting. But lets wait and see there still 8 months left to fill out a class. And who knows, not to knock Pocic at all, but guys could emerge who are even better. Lets just relax a bit.
Definitely stings losing another "lock." Plus, if I were a 2013 OL recruit considering OSU, I might have to step back and ask, why are all of these top OL recruits going elsewhere?
We had a very good class last year. Boren is the next starter at center, Decker could start this year, Dodson is going to be the left tackle of the future and O'Connor is going to be a beast at guard. And don't forget that we only have one senior starting on the o-line, and that's Reid Fragel. Lindsley, Mewhort and Norwell have all been getting good reviews this spring, too. Our line will be just fine.
Not to mention that Lisle is good, Lovell Peterson is going to get an offer soon, and we could pull a guy like Dorian Johnson or Rodgers soon. We'll be just fine. Yeah, losing Pocic hurts, but it's not even June yet.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
Who knows if this sticks; kids make quick decisions often. Good get by LSU but this isn't the end of the world. People need to relax about this stuff. Urban will get good players and compete with the best
I love looking at these boards any time a recruit commits elsewhere. You would think the world was ending because this kid chose another school. You guys do realize OSU had 2 highly regarded tackles in the last class and 1 already in this class, right? There is still over half a year left to try and get someone else. These kids still haven't been to summer camps or played a snap of their senior season. There will be kids who are under the radar that will become highly rated recruits over the next few months. So go ahead and take some meds for your panic attacks and calm down...it is still only May.
Also don't sleep on a decommittment here. Not saying its likely, but he is less than a day removed from his visit to LSU. He may have made an impulse decision and could potentially reconsider after settling down a little. If he takes officials this fall don't count us out. It's a reach, but it's a better chance than going after Tunsil
Worse things have happened. Neal & Anzalone have more to do with other coaches getting in their heads about this years insane LBs along with currently having Shazier & Grant. They were going to have a hard time seeing the field next year and thats just a fact.
Not getting Pocic is the only huge miss so far (although I personally wish we would have gone after McCray a long time ago) so I don't think anyone should be losing faith just yet. O line is a big need for us so hopefully we get some good guys there - I think we will. You can't have the best recruiting class every year but we'll do just fine. Much of the class will come naturally if we have a strong 2012. Kids want to play for a team that has a shot at a NC so the world isn't ending over this...
The world is full of kings & queens who'll blind your eyes & steal your dreams - it's heaven & hell - Ronnie James Dio.
Latham wants to play DL, i believe. He's been showing great burst off the D Line in camp, and I get the feeling that's what he's looking for at the next level.
There is a lot of time between now and Feb. Wait until after the season and recruits get a chance to see the style of football Urban intends on running at OSU. I willing to bet after people see an explosive offense and a very aggressive D there will be a big time Buzz in Columbus. Also not to make excuses but Urban is still playing catch up in recruiting. Most of these kids have been recruited by teams for 3 years now. Wait until the 2014 class.
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men
Crusher, I like the way you think. I'd really like to see Mewhort, Linsley, Fragel and Co. make those Michigan OL look punk in comparison. And besides, if Pocic has to go anywhere but OSU, I would prefer it to be somewhere other than Michigan, ND, or Alabama. Yeah, I know LSU is a huge program, but hey, somehow I don't get as riled by them.
It's too late to turn up the heat on a recruit? WTF???? It's MAY of 2012. Last time I checked signing day is February of 2013. Guys who were though to be locks in Spring the year before will commit other places come February. Who knows what player will be climbing the ranks by February. None of these guys have played their senior year. Many haven't even began going to camps yet.
It sucks to lose out on Pocic, but could be when all is said and done any of the "lesser" named targets right now could end up being the top of the heap for O-Lineman come February. The notion, though, that it's too late to turn up the heat on a recruit is absolutely laughable. If anything, it could be an advantage. Be that last visit, be the new guy on the block and make a big run at the kid. A lot of times these big named recruits end up pulling a big surprise at the end of the process.
Again, what I said is being taken out of context. I am saying that I think it's too late to turn up the heat on Tunsil, not any other recruit - ONLY Tunsil. He's not currently reporting an OSU offer, and even if he has one, I really don't think he leaves the South. That's all I'm saying.
Get him on campus and anything can happen, but I don't think it comes to that.
@OBMB: I agree with you there. Michigan was full press on Tunsil since day 1, and he brushed them off pretty quickly. Clearly no interest in leaving the south, so time period isn't even really relevant here
Some of these comments are making me wonder what SOME people on this site do whenever they face real adversary/challenges in life. People are acting like petulant children who were told they couldn't have a cookie until they finished dinner. Meyer's always got pretty good recruits in his time at Florida and him and his staff did a pretty good job of coaching up less heralded recruits while he was at Bowling Green/Utah.
To those having a cow; calm down, show a little faith, and wait until NSD. Wait scratch that last one, wait until the games 2-5 seasons from now when the current recruiting class will see the field. Recruiting rankings mean jack. How many times over the past decade has FSU finished with a top5 class and what have they done with those top recruiting classes? There are plenty of other examples out there. Sure it's nice to have a top class, but that doesn't mean anything once the season rolls around.
At the end of the day Meyer & co will get the guys they need and then mold and shape their bodies and minds for OSU football. Yes, we'll get a lot of great recruits and assemble a pretty good class because of who Meyer and OSU are. Will we get the top class? Maybe who knows. Does it really matter if the class is #1 or #15? Not really. You can start worrying once being awarded the top class automatically qualifies you for a BCS or NC game. Grab a beer, kick back, and enjoy life until then.
Top talent + Great Coaching =Championships ... I've seen it for the last 3 years up close, and in person. Alabama didn't start winning until N.Saban started bringing in top ranked recruiting classes. So to those that say recruiting rankings don't mean anything I beg to differ. Saban has his fair share of 4, and 5 stars, but also coaches up his 3 stars too. Check M.Barron, and C.Upshaw. Right now I hate to admit it, but Alabama is the model as far as recruiting goes, but I will say this, I look for U.Meyer to have the same impact N.Saban had at Bama, on OSU. I still fully expect this to be a another top 6 or 7 class I think the limited numbers overall will keep it from going any higher, but if we can get to 22-23 recruits, top 3 no doubt. I don't think people are worrying that kids are picking schools other then OSU its how the game goes, I think the issue is the perceived "locks" are picking other schools. I vote to retire the word ... Lol ...
I bet Urban reads threads like these and just snickers.
You guys will be fine. It stings just like Isaac and Levenberry stung for us, but we have too many good things going for us (OSU and Michigan) not to get a satisfactory replacement(s). It does suck, though, that Isaac and Pocic got pulled out of the Midwest/B1G.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

This recruiting thing is starting to get way to crazy. Yah i'm like every other die hard fan i'm not happy when we dont get the people we want, but right now OSU fans are starting to give our school a bad name with recruits. The media only is intensifying it. I mean death threats on tully tilman and his family. The whole anzalone family mess. Sometimes we as fans need to the let the coaches and the school do their job and just enjoy the game. The way things are going we are gonna lose the school a great class not the staff.
Alex, what went wrong with his Pocic's recruitment? didn't u have insight into his "almost" commmitment to us a while ago? I really just want to know b/c this kid was the best OL available to fill our need.
Ouch.

Very much so.
shocked it happened so quick
Well, that blows. On to the next. I imagine that the focus on Khaliel Rodgers just increased.
I'd say Rodgers, Johnson, and possibly Tunsil/Munger/Peterson may get the heat turned up.
Tunsil isn't even reporting an OSU offer according to Rivals. Might it be a little late to turn up the heat on him?
There is no way we have a shot at Tunsil.
It's never too late. Did you see what Urban did between November and February?
Best of luck to Ethan, and I sure hope we get some good news re: O Line (and WR) soon...
When do tOSU camps start again?
Well this stinks.
unzrenewal, that recruiting effort (while excellent) was on players more local and with more stated interest in OSU. Tunsil seems like he'll stay in SEC country.
Okay guys, please notice how I used the word "possibly". Chill, UFM is a miracle worker, so I included him.

I bet Urban has literally zero fucks to give about Ohio State blogs and their posters' various crackpot theories
