OL-DL Video From Columbus NFTC

Enjoy, courtesy of CBS's Bryan Fischer. Offensive lineman name listed on top of captions.

My notes:

  • As I have been saying, Lovell Peterson looks really good....loved this kid a year ago and that love is coming back....I would take him in a heart beat
  • Billy Price looked good overall...first rep was just OK and last rep he was stopped by David Dawson, but overall solid job
  • Kyle Meadows needs to put on weight big time to be an OT for Ohio State...Taco Charlton burned him twice badly
  • Speaking of Charlton he looked good in these drills, but I'm still not sold on him with pads on in a game situation
  • Darius Latham was unstoppable
  • Logan Tuley-Tillman looks out of shape and slow....not just saying that because of recent events
  • Kenton Gibbs of Cass Tech looked solid
  • Malik McDowell in the 2014 class is definitely a good one

Wow I definitely enjoy watching this stuff, very intense. Billy Price was inconsistent, looked a little nervous, unsure of himself. Easy for me to say tho, that place looks a little intimidating lol. Im not gunna lie the person who stood out the most was... (besides the person at the 1:40 mark) I dont wanna say his name but its a mexican dish. Also the 2 O-Lineman we're targeting in Logan Tulley-Tillman and Lovell Peteson did not impress me that much at all. Alex what do u think??

Edit-Sorry I didnt realize ur commentary below the video, just went straight to the comments after watching. I guess my assessment was a bit different than yours. I defer to your judgement:)

I liked Peterson....LTT didn't impress me...Dawson was good....D-Line has an advantage in this and Taco is a "combine freak" so that doesn't surprise me he did well....did you see at the 3:00 when Peterson demolishes that guy?? Holy Smokes!...Price won DL MVP at this event so I guess the rest of his showing was REALLY good

@Alex,

Completely agree with your assessment of Peterson. It is puzzling to me why he doesn't have an offer at this point.

I'm not going to call him the best OL at the camp but he looks slim and athletic. He moves really well with quick choppy steps and stays infront of his defender. He doesn't rely on his arms he moves his body well. I would say his footwork is probably the best in the group in my opinion. Needs to work on his strength but that would come with Coach Mick..OFFER THIS KID

LTT looked like garbage. What do you expect?

Letter burning aside, I agree that it's hard to see, based upon this video, what all the top programs see in this LTT kid.

Just a few observations from watching every video from all of the NFTCs for the past 3 months or so:

  • Billy Price I think wants to bullrush on every play, and it works against the weaker guys, but if he wants to be effective against the upper echelon of D1 OGs, he's gonna need to use the hands more, and really swim through and then focus on powering through. If he's gonna go for strength over quickness inside, He's gonna need a bit more than he's got, but in terms of raw development, he's there.
  • LTT did have a shoulder injury during the camp, but that by no means is an excuse for the fact that he couldn't stay in front of his assignment, and looked out of shape. He fails the eyeball test, which for a guy at his position, is a way to almost instantly recognize good weight and bad weight. Dawson is a big thick guy, with good weight, because it's bulk that doesn't affect his lateral movement. You can say LTT has good feet until you're blue in the face, good footwork doesn't mean anything when you can't move them fast enough to haul your overweight frame in front of a DE.
  • Peterson is good, the only concern I have is one I've mentioned before: His frame is quick and lean for an OL, which is good until the bigger guys push him around. I'd like to see him in pads against some top talent before I'm completely convinced. That said, he's still way stronger than he looks compared to bigger guys.
  • Charlton looks like he's in a safety blitz package on every play... which would be great if he was a safety. Sure, he's unblockable in camp, when he doesn't have to wear pads and has 5 yards to practically sprint at his guy, and make a juke move. There's a reason we don't line up WRs at DE. I think he's slightly overrated, but definitely has potential, I'm just not buying it yet. The juke moves will be far less effective with pads, and if he tries to wheel around the entire outside of the line to get to the QB, he'll either get blocked out behind the QB where it opens up the play, or by the time he gets around, he'll have overpursued and will be watching the play happen without a chance to recover, which is one of the traits he's praised for.
  • Still not sure why we never went harder in recruiting Latham. He's a two-way lineman, who is highly praised from both sides, and is or was fairly high on OSU, according to the sites.

my asessment from the video. Taco looked like an animal ( the comments helped me realize he had an advantage) but still he def passed my eyeball test. Lovell Peterson looked like the best OL at the camp (I liked his nasty).Billy looked good as someone else said it just looked like he wanted to bullrush. LTT looked like a giant sissy girl im 5'8" and 170 lbs and I truly believe I could get to the qb against him. (hes as soft as medicated cotton). I dont know who Gibbs was but he looked good as well

mark may wins douchebag of the year... again

Dawson: looked like the most college ready OL. Also had a mean streak. Good pick up for Hoke.

Lovell: Obviously needs to keep putting weight back on after the season he just had. But is very athletic, strong, and sound for a junior. Would not mind at all to see him get an offer. Only OL there that I'd take over him right now is Dawson and that may change wants Lovell gets his weight back up.

Taco: is an athlete, not a football player. He'll run by most any OL when he's got no pads, a five yard run to build up steam, and he's going for a stationary tackling pad. In real games, though, he hasn't showed it yet.

Price: compact, strong kid. Decent get off. Will need technique work, which he'll get from Vrabro and Fick. If he learns to use his hands and improves his quickness like Simon did, then sky's the limit. Obviously must have had a beast day to earn MVP.

LTT: sloppily fat. Lacks upper-body power (for now) and had below average footwork. I'd gladly pass on the kid because I didn't see much to work with. How is he rated that high? Injury or not, he's got a sloppy body and bad feet.

I'd like to hear what some of the UM fans that lurk & post on this site think about LTT. I know most of us have scarlet tinted glasses on, but I'm not seeing LTT's hype either. Has he just not been working out lately or what?

The prevailing sentiment on the Michigan boards is that his camp performance has been a decline from his junior season and is disappointing.  They concede that he looks to have a lot of bad weight on right now.  Many quickly chalk this up his shoulder injury, but most agree that he has a long way to go and a lot of work to do to get to his potential and that he's almost certainly looking at a redshirt.  He dropped over 100 spots in the most recent rivals rankings, but cautious optimism prevails.  And of course, everyone creamed over his letter burning tweet.

LTT looks like a slob, though I expect that to be different after a few years in AA.

Price needs to work on technique, bull-rushing doesn't cut-it every play.

Dawson really impressed me, especially his foot speed.

Peterson excites me, OSU needs to offer him.

@Buck-I.8

Dawson going elsewhere scares me.  Top programs keep coming around.  He moved back to Michigian from Texas to be with family and play where he was familiar [and be close to ann arbor].  He just lost his dad in an accident.  I haven't heard anything whatsoever regarding it, but that is a significant event that might change a kids thinking.  There were rumors he went to LSU for a barbeque, but all sources have confirmed he was not there.

@seth

LTT is interesting.  I read stories about him well before NSD last Feb. and how his offer sheet was a mile long, etc.  The highest I've ever seen him ranked was around 100.  I don't evaluate film or anything, but the consensus is that he does have bad weight, needs to improve technique, but has an extremely high ceiling.  He does have a shoulder injury, but who's to say that's hindering him all that much?  He could be a little lazy going through the camp circuit...maybe he's content after being committed.

I don't think Hoke is second guessing LTT.  Urban sees something, too, otherwise he wouldn't be pursuing a committed recruit.

I like the kid Marquise Moore, solidly built fella, and his motor went none stop, even gave Dawson a good battle at the end. Loved the smirk on Dawson's face when he stood up B.Price. He has a real nasty streak. My kind of OL! L.Peterson is so lean, but his lowerbody is nice, thick, and powerful. Looks like his upperbody is his weak point. I hope we go ahead, and offer this kid, and don't wait until the last minute, and let someone else swoop in and snatch him up.

Peterson is supposed to be the best Center prospect out of Ohio since Nick Mangold..why haven't we offered him yet? Especially considering Bobeks transfer. He seems to be the perfect fit for Urbans offense..Pouncy'ish should I say.

Peterson played with walking pneumonia last season, so I'm sure the staff wants to see him compete at camp before giving him an offer.

Obviously LTT is a work in progress, the reason college coaches love him is because of his high ceiling. No one is expecting LTT to come in the first year and contribute. He will most likely red shirt and will probably end up being a two year starter. I think Michigan has one of the best O lineman coaches in the country with Darrel Funk, I am confident he will turn LTT into a more than formiddable football player. When you have offers from the likes of Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan, ( I know there is a lot more) the coaches see something in you. He will not get playing time at Michigan for at least another 3 -4 years from this Fall. That is a lot of time to get it right.

I would not be worried about Dawson to decommit anywhere. It does annoy me when he tweets about so and so coach calling him and the next offer that he got, but shoot I would be excited too if I was getting all these offers from top programs. This reminds me of Terry Richardson from last year when he wanted to visit LSU and Bama, that never happened. We 7 on 7 against Cass all summer long so I will chat it up with him and see what is going on, but I am confident that Wilcher will not allow a kid that committed to Michigan go back on his word.

On another note: Really excited about Malik Mcdowell, I hope Hoke can close that one down early. Very confident he chooses Michigan.

Rational: it does seem like Michigan is doing a great job of stockpiling OL prospects, so the odds are their favor that a certain percentage of them will turn into excellent talents by their 2nd, 3rd years.

But we'll be watching to see:

1). If they're able to develop dynamic, top-caliber defensive units. The only good Michigan D in the last ten years was 2006 and they struggled down the stretch. LLLLLoyd had underrated offenses; it was the decline of his defenses that led to his slide. Yeah, we saw improvement last year under Mattison, but they also benefited from a weak schedule. Other than the veteran DL, Mattison got the most out of some decent, not great, talent. I'm more skeptical that Michigan's recent recruiting successes will translate on the defensive side. We'll find out in the next few years.

2). On the offensive side, if Michigan's staff is as smart, strategic, creative, flexible, etc. as Urbz and company? Brady Hoke's 2010 offense at SD State had better talent than almost every team they faced. Last year, he rode DR, largely jettisoning promises that he'd transition toward pro offense. The Michigan offensive staff is good, but it'll be fun to watch the battles against Urbz in coming years.

Just curious, why would you be skeptical that Michigan's staff can develop a top-caliber defense??  You point out that Mattison, who has one of the best DC resumes in college football, did a great job of developing mediocre talent into a very good (no, not top-caliber) defense last year.  Now they're recruiting better talent.  I think we're going to see some scary good defenses on both sides in The Game for years to come...

Set your avi
Rational MFAN on 1 Jun 2012 - 12:55pm #

I agree with commandhead: The defense is something I am not going to worry about. Maybe this year a bit, because the talent is still not at a Michigan level. But there are some good pieces there.

But once the recruits of the last two years and even 2013 class come to fruition I think the defense is going to be a top 10 defense. You mix that talent with the coaching and good things happen. Likewise, with you guys as well. Do not expect to see 40-34 or 42-39 games in the near future.

@Run_Fido_Run: Isn't that what good coaches do though? They put their ego to the side for the sake of the team. The offensive coaches at Michigan believe in a pro style west coast offense, but they did what was best for the team and not themselves and Borges learned the spread concepts and did a great job with it. Michigan will slowly transition to the pro style more after Denard is gone, If Gardner starts next year, I think there will be more spread stuff but expect more pro style as well. With that said, I expect Denard to do some pro style this year as well, with being about 80 percent spread.

Hoke could of pulled a Rich Rod and shoved his system down his players throats even though it is not suitable for them and just let the year go to waste. He did not and turned it into a pretty memorable season.

Full court press on Peterson! He looked great but needs to put another 20lbs on.  Michigan can have LTT he looked slow, fat and out of shape but they will be happy with Dawson, he looked really solid. Price looked good evn though Dawson stuffed him at the end. Taco's skills and athletisim might be best at a LB but I thought he looked solid also. Not to be tough on Meadows but he is not OSU OT material, he looks like he is not ready for elite Big Ten DE's. I have always liked Peterson and I'm starting to feel as if he is going to sky rocket up the rankings, sign him now Urban!
