Is meyer pulling our leg?

Not saying this is true, or even that I believe it, but just something worth pondering. Meyer keeps saying that he's worried about our playmakers on offense. However, he keeps going after defensive players at a much higher clip (Jonathan Allen the latest example). Now I know defense wins championships and Meyer has a history of loving D-lineman, but with how stacked we are on defense (especially the front 7 after this year and last) and with how worried meyer says he is about skill players on O, you would think he would be stocking up more on O playmakers than D. Does anyone think it could be a ploy of his to motivate people on the team and that he might not be AS worried as he is making himself out to be? Not trying to start a conspiracy theory by any means, just something to ponder.

With Marshall, Elliott, and the possible silent commit of Gibson along with the 2012 recruits we do have help on the way and Urban knows who else he is in decent standing with for the future. I think he knows that his offense may take a little more time to perfect and having a stud defense allows for that. Think of the Florida D in the title game against us. I personally want that.

No, I think the staff is still going hard after playmakers, but many of those elite players are taking their time to decide.  I do think we have some playmakers on the roster already, but we'll see who steps up come Fall.  We still have a lot of good incoming 2012 talent.

Me personally I'll NEVER believe The Ohio State University is lacking for offensive play makers ... Normally we have a steady flow, and the only thing that stopped it last season was the suspension of Posey, and Herron ... had those guys played the entire season .... the onus wouldn't have been so heavy on the very young group of WR's and Posey being on the field would have lessened the defensive attention they drew as well ... I truly believe our WR's will be fine this year after a full year of experience, and off season training to get stronger ... I also believe after watching the SEC for the last few season believe defense really, and truly wins Championships, and Meyer knows this ...

Think about Ginn.  Whenever he touched the ball, it was exciting to see if he would take it all the way.  He just made things happen when the ball was in his hands.

Do any of us feel the same way about Philly Brown, Devin Smith, Evan Spencer, etc.?  Not yet.

@Bassplayer ... but there is a big difference, they were able to baby feed Ginn, from a highchair when he first arrived ... They sat these boys down at the dinner table from the jump ...

Well Ginn was what the number 2 player in America based on Rivals rankings?  Maybe not quite that high, but he was WAY up there.  They knew he was going to be great.  There is not an exisiting player on this offense like that right now.  It's not to say there aren't very good players, but the 2013 class is where those explosive athletes are going to come from.

Ohio State's offensive talent is good, and good enough to win the B1G in my opinion.  Especially, when the new system really takes hold and the players are comfortable playing on the offensive side of the ball.  I don't think Meyer says we need more playmakers or I'm worried about the playmakers in reference to B1G titles though.  He's looking much bigger picture.  If we want to beat Bama's D, we need a Ginn or Harvin, among other things as well, but you need that guy who can break off a huge play every time he touches the ball against an elite D.  It will keep them honest.

I think people misinterperet what Meyer is saying.  He's not saying there isn't talent to have a very good team here.  He's saying there's not offensive talent to win a national title.  He's right.

I think with the Loses of Simon, Nate Williams and if he has the season that many people think he will have Hankins to the NFL.  Urban just wants to get as many freaks as he can. I think the playmakers are coming let them have a chance to see the new offense and Braxton Miller they will be linning up to sign. Plus Jalin Marshall is as about as good as it's going to get as far as playmakers for this class he is a stud.

It's good to be home.

The offensive difference of I-formation isolation plays over and over is OVER. Our offense will use what we have in creative ways to our strength. There is no comparison to past and future offensive ability/success. See BG, Utah, Rice, Iowa State.

We've had a parade of solid receivers (Robiskie, Hartline, Sanz, Posey) but not a single since Ginn was a threat to do anything after he caught the ball.

I'm not sure if you watched Posey before Tattoogate, but he made plays with his legs constantly. Unless you mean, like Ted Ginn, in which case you're being unrealistic.

Well, Ginn was a different circumstance because he came in as a CB (yes, he was rated #2 overall in the country)

Jalin Marshall will rock our worlds.  If he were uncommitted right now, we'd be hyping the Hell out of him.  Personally, I'm excited at the prospect of adding a guy like James Quick, though.  He'll be an awesome slot guy or misdirection threat.

bassplayer7770's picture
bassplayer7770 on 11 May 2012 - 12:14pm #

I totally agree about Jalin, and I'm also excited about Ezekiel Elliott.  Other guys like Quick, Foster, and Devon Allen would make the 2013 class that much better.  Then there's Gibson of course.

As for 2012, who knows, maybe they'll use Armani Reeves on both sides of the ball, and we have Southward, Epitropoulos, and Ball coming as well.  I have no doubt the staff will find some playmakers, but time will tell if any of them are truly elite like Ginn and Harvin were.

I'm glad to see us getting out there in Cali though, because you know who currently has the "Harvin, Ginn" player ... its Oregon .. D'Anthony Thomas is about as close to either of those players as I have seen ... J.Marshall is going to be a world beater, but I think it will be in his 2nd season though ...

We all know defense wins championships.

I would also say this - I read an article, and I can't recall but I think it might have been on this site - about how Herman's offense was designed to work well even when overmatched by the defense. A great example is Iowa St.'s win over OK ST last season. I don't know if that plays in to anything, but maybe Urban is just not that worried about the talent level on offense because he knows that the scheme will allow them to score points even if they don't have a ton of "playmakers". Could be a reach, but just thought I'd offer my take on it.

For the love of God and all that is holy, STOP TRYING TO COMPARE OUR CURRENT PLAYERS TO GINN!!

Ginn was an anomaly and we may never get another player as electrifying as him. We will do just fine with what we have.

I only mentioned Ginn (and Harvin) because that seems to be the type of playmakers Coach Meyer is looking for.  The staff will find some playmakers.  Heck, I thought Devin Smith turned on the jets on his TD catch in the Spring Game which was nice to see.

Relax Grayskull, Urban himself said where are the Ted Ginn Jr's on this team?  No one is saying Brown or anyone else needs to be Teddy Ginn.  What we are saying, and what Urban is looking for, is a guy who is a threat to take one to the house every time he touches the ball.  From what I've seen of these players so far, no one on the current roster firtst that description.

Jalin Marshall will.  He may not be Ted Ginn good, because few are, but he may be better too.  One thing we know is the guy will be a threat that ALL defenses will have to account for.  The current roster doesn't have that.  There are fine players sure, but they aren't difference makers.

We are thin at playmaker on current roster and with what we have coming in the next year (2013 class)we will get some help but not alot. IMO I'd like to see 2 more verbals from WR/Playmaker type kids. I love Marshall and Elliot but would love to see Quick and Gibson ( Foster longshot) added to this class. As much as Urban thinks you can never have enough defense I say you can never turn down a playmaking type player. I noticed that at Florida Urban had an abundance of d-line and fast playmaking type personal. He will get that eventually but for the near future we are thin. Maybe a WR or two can step-up and become that role, maybe Southward, Thomas or Smith???

Ginn was my favorite player and he was definitely electrifying BUT he can't crack a starting line-up in the NFL as a receiver. As a return man we can't expect to see another Ginn anytime soon, but 2 guys on that same team (Holmes and Gonzalez) were better receivers.

I realize Ginn was a CB recruit, but was there ever really doubt that he would be playing offense at Ohio State?  I really don't remember serious conversation about Ginn playing CB at Ohio State.  My comment mostly meant that, people knew the guy was a freak athlete.  Much like Marshall this year.  He'll end up being a top 10 national player in my opinion, but it won't be because he's played a mean QB all season.

@Phoenix824 Alabama's offensive players that I can think of the past few years: Mark Ingram, Julio Jones,Trent Richardson, Brad Smelley, Marquis Maze, and Glen Coffee. They've had plenty of offensive studs.

I would be okay if this was not the 10th thread in a month ive seen trying to compare someone to Ted Ginn. Just because Urban said it does not make it okay for every idiot with an internet connection to say it. People on this forum need to stop making references like:

-hes the next "Ginn"

-hes the next "Harvin"

-hes the next "Simon"

These players are one of a kind and cannot be replicated. We need to take these players for face value and let them form their own identity. Trying to hold them up to such expectations is ridiculous

This thread asks if Meyer is pulling our leg, so the fact that he has mentioned a playmaker like Ginn makes it very relevant for this thread.

Is Urban Meyer pulling our leg or just our finger? (insert loud, juicy fart noise here)

Threads like this make we REALLY want the fall to get here ASAP so we can actually see some real football.

You can reference if a guy is the next Ginn or Harvin and not mean it literally.  Is Jalin Marshall going to be Ted Ginn exactly?  ABSOLUTELY NOT!  He could be better, he could be about the same he could fall short.  When I say will Marshall be that Ginn or Harvin player, I mean will he be that TYPE of player.  A guy you can snap the ball too.  A guy who could run the ball.  A guy who can go out wide, or catch out of the slot, a guy who can return kicks etc.  If you would like I could spell out a whole paragraph to say this every time I reference a recruit or I can say I believe Marshall will be the Tedd Ginn guy or Percy Harvin that Urban is looking for.

Does that classify me as an idiot with an internet connection?  Perhaps, but I think most reasonable people understand that when we throw these comparisons around it's more about referencing the type of player the guy will be, not that he will literally meet or exceed everything that Ginn or Harvin were able to do in their careers.

TennBuckeye, I completely agree, but something's gotta fill the void, right? Just thought this was an interesting topic because, as a former collegiate athlete, I know coaches would do things like this to simply motivate their players.
