Interesting. I like it for recruiting too [come to OSU, you're given an iPad for classes].

This makes me upset
Its a loaner program. Per the last line in that write-up, OSU will issue SA's an i-pad to use and SA's must return them, what they call an 'issuance and retrieval basis'.
Yes, that's what the article says
definitely helpful for recruiting. at the very least, athletes don't care about them are neutral. at best, they are excited about having less to lug around and they could probably get their playbooks in there somewhere too...
Would be nice if this was offered to those students that aren't athletes, but you know that isn't happening. You know, the ones that have to pay for their tuition.
@bleezy that would be wonderful...where is my iPad? I pay out of state tuition...jelly
@bleezy How selfish of the athletic department to not provide the 60,000ish non-student athletes iPads.
I think the point is, I'm in debt right now because I wasn't born with freakish natural athletic ability, and the rich keep on getting richer.
@Buck-I.8 I'm in the same boat as you, but I don't see the point in getting mad at the athletic deparment spending the money they make on people within their own department.
yea as much as i'd love to have an ipad paid for by the school, we all know that's very unrealistic. im not totally on board for this move, but i guess this is the time we live in.
I'm not mad at the department, but since you mentioned it, the athletic department is part of a school, it's not some privatized section of a big bureaucracy. When most of the revenue comes from branding and athletics, a lot of that money should go to the reason why the institution exists
Never said it wasn't part of the school, but I still don't see any reason (other than pure jealousy) to be upset that a completely self supporting department is spending money to enhance itself.
They pay rent/overhead to university, and they profit enormously...since they're a separate entity it's no problem really. Students and community members get mad like "hey my tuition is going to iPads for athletes? Wtf?" but in reality, it doesn't.
"Completely self-supporting"? How does a department like that come about? They don't have a bakesale
@Urbz, no one said that...?
Largely basketball TV deals and football profits.
Basketball is much bigger as far as money is concerned I believe. They take no money from the university, in fact they pay for rent/overhead.http://money.cnn.com/2010/03/18/news/companies/basketball_profits/index.htm

^That one is quite good. Of course remember that money from these profits goes to the 34 non-revenue sports, Title IX and whatnot.
I was referring to the comments on various The Lantern articles and angry students on Reddit. I never said here. They are clearly self sustaining. I guess iPads are just reinvesting in the business.
The AD takes no tuiton, state or federal taxes. They return back to the school over $15M in grant in aid. This is extremely rare in college atheletics. Most operate in the red.
If you want to read about expenses for athletics, look at Ben Jay's Twitter feed and his back and forth with Jeff Svoboda: https://twitter.com/#!/Ben75Jay
You could always take out a slightly bigger loan, buy an Ipad with it, and call it school supplied...my wife was "given" an Ipod Touch in Pharmacy school there and I'm pretty sure I'm paying for it right now :P
