Early Test for Urban

I'm surprised more people haven't been talking about this, but this Anzalone debacle seems like an important test for Urban in terms of his family contract. With the comments Dr. Anzalone made and the overall lack of control Urban had over this Waugh guy, this probably makes Urban pretty mad. I know if I was in Urban's shoes I would be shaking my head and stressing over the fact that this whole situation was out of my hands. Thoughts?

What would this have to do with his family contract? He can't control every player/potential recruit's interaction with people. Name me a coach who would have control here...even Hoke....shoot he was taking up a third of the field at their spring game but of course w/ only several thousand maybe he could have patrolled recruits  too :-)

How was Urban to have any control over Waugh? Just an unfortunate situation that a strange fan with an unacceptable history created. No one could have stopped or known about it unless they had personal knowledge or was an acquaintance of the guy. Impossible situation. Think daddy was looking for an excuse to move son to a college he wanted him to go to.

That is exactly what I am saying. Urban had no control whatsoever, and I expect Urban was probably mad. You guys are preaching to the choir. What I was wondering was, with the extra stress that comes with a crappy situation like this, does Urban still keep himself controlled? Does he stay in "center-field" or does he try to do too much with this situation?

The "overall lack of control Urban had over this Waugh guy"?!? To be honest, I'm more concerned with the overall lack of control Urban has over JBUCKHAM94. This individual is out there starting dumb threads and Urban hasn't done anything about it?!?! I'm surprised JBUCKHAM94's posts aren't being talked about for the depths at which they are testing Urban's family contract.

This was a very nice, tasteful, classy, non-asshole response.

FYI, I'm speaking in opposites so I don't break the commenting policy.

This thread was valid. Its been cupcakes for the most part since Urban got here, and this is one of his first tests. Yes, we know you are all over Urban's private parts and nothing will ever change that, but as for others (including myself), we are waiting to see if any health/stress demons come back and haunt him like they ended up doing at Florida.

I couldn't disagree more about this being a 'test' for Coach Meyer and his family values contract.  Had the OSU staff had anything to do with what transpired on an 'official' visit, then it would be a test for them.

The facts are that AA made an unofficial visit to the spring game and a this Waugh character, who has ZERO involvement at OSU, made contact with he and several other players in a public setting.  That is well out of the coaching staff's hands.  No doubt UM and the staff are very busy this weekend trying to minimize the negative PR from this incident but to me this has nothing at all to do with the 'family values' of the program.

IMO, AA's father/family did not want him at OSU.  This issue created an opportunity for AA to back out.  If that is what their family deems best for them, I wish them well.

This Buckeye coaching staff has already dealt with and overcome a very serious issue when the NCAA penalties handed down were in excess of what was expected.  They passed that test with flying colors and am sure are handling this as well as they can.

It is WAY too early in the recruitment for next year's class to get too excited about one player.  AA can and will be replaced.  One young man won't make much of a difference in the long term.  Go Bucks!

Eh, everything that led to that happened before Urban's time, so I don't really see it as his issue, even though he has to fight through it. Regardless, whether its Urban's "first issue" or "second issue" to deal with, this Waugh guy is still an issue.

LOL...I suppose the ^^^ made under my previous post was intended for me so will respond.  I'll simply stick to facts, which include UM's 1st issue as Head Coach at OSU having to deal with the NCAA penalties handed down in December.  That happened right in the middle of recruiting the 2013 class and were more severe than expected.  That was the 'first' issue the current staff HAD to handle because it was the first test of the staff's credibility with recruits.  UM and the staff got out ahead of it and ended up securing a terrific class for the coming year.

This Waugh incident was completely out of the coaching staff's control.  This incident happened on an unofficial visit in a public setting.  Had this visit by AA been under UM and the staff's control, the family values contract addressed would be an issue.  It wasn't.  This is more a PR issue than anything and is being handled no doubt IMO.

There is no denail here except by those who seem to believe they know more than others do or whom believe their opinion has more merit.  Rather than insult others, it may be best if you stick to facts when you post.  Go Bucks!

I think those calling this thread "dumb" were the ones insulting others, not me. I didn't go outside any facts. As for whether this is his "first issue" or "second issue", that's a matter of opinion, but regardless its still an issue.

Unbelievable because we aren't over-reacting like many are?  As soon as the university and staff found out about this Waugh character they did everything humanly possible to get ahead of it from a PR perspective.  My guess is that they have done a great job of damage-control and this won't impact OSU beyond AA.

The difference between recruiting the 2013 class during the NCAA sanctions and Waugh are obvious and significant.  The NCAA sanctions impacted the future of OSU football, the credibility of the curren coaching staff, and possibly an entire recruiting class.   The staff handled the NCAA sanctions masterfully in spite of the fact that it effectively took a bowl game away from all potential recruits in the 2013 class.

That is a MUCH larger issue to deal with than Waugh.  He has had his day and the staff has most likely limited the damage he did to AA.  Most likely, AA's family did not want him at OSU.  This incident gave them the reason for him to de-commit.  The damage has been done on this one and OSU will be just fine.

It's really unbelievable to me that so many are making so much of this.  Go Bucks!

Keep the comments coming this fueding is very entertaining. I love anything OSU sports and I beleive that I am a solid and educated fan but you guy take this stuff way to serious. I'm not trying to be a mediator but you all have valid points but you've made this into an uninspiring fued. This 'Waugh-gate" situation is so far overblown. AA and family live under a rock and way over-reacted. Waugh is just an  Over-bearing Buckeye fan who found a situation where he got a picture taken with these recruits. He is not a booster and the University and Meyer have zero connection to this kid. This could happen at any school and I'm sure that every major program has some over-bearing fans like Waugh. Yes Waugh is a convicted perve and that is creepy in it's self but I'm sure that this is not the first convicted felon to have taken a picture or been in association with players/recruits. Life will go on and OSU will survive without an Alex Anzalone and his shallow over-reactions.

Taking this too seriously isn't something I'll be accused of any time soon.  Having been a long-time reader of 11W I just joined this afternoon.  My first post resulted in being called 'terribly ignorant or not wanting to face facts.'

Personally, I don't believe there are many if any points to make.  UM has handled an issue at OSU already that is FAR bigger than this Waugh character.  UM and the staff did a terrific job in securing the commitments in our 2013 class that not only impacted those young men in that moment but also in the coming year.  The Waugh situation is a one-time situation and has been handled IMO.  Go Bucks!

Wow guys. I didn't make this thread to get into arguments on how dumb my thoughts are (ThirdLegLouie *cough* *cough*). I think it is quite obvious that Urban couldn't do anything to stop Waugh's actions. I also think it is obvious Urban has to deal with all the negative association OSU has right now because of Waugh and Dr. Anzalone's comments. It is all but common knowledge that Urban isn't going to be a Woody Hayes, Joe Paterno, or Bobby Bowden in terms of how many years he continues coaching. If this incident is anything close to the "garbage " he experienced in the SEC, I am wondering how much it will affect Urban. Like I said earlier, will he stray from his "center field" position as a head coach to "fix" OSU's image?

JAKEBUCKEYE- "This thread was valid." No, it wasn't- the quote that I cited in my original post, about there being a concern over the "overall lack of control Urban had over this Waugh guy", is laughable, because you can NOT expect a head football coach to have control over every single fan who attends a spring game. THIS WASN'T EVEN AN OFFICIAL VISIT! I could have just said "Right on, man-- I think this is absolutely going to affect his family contract" but I'm not a child who speaks in opposites; if I have an opposing view point, I'm capable of expressing it in a manner that does not violate the commenting policy.

"Its been cupcakes for the most part since Urban got here". Dealing with the bowl ban and unexpected scholarship reductions is "cupcakes"? Dealing with a depleted O-Line roster and having to get many players on point with an elite conditioning schedule has been "cupcakes"? Previous coaches like Bollman and Sicilian left the players with such solid fundamentals that it's truly been blessing for this new staff to come in without having to do much of anything--- "cupcakes", right? Filling out the '12 class with elite talen was cupcakes? I HAD NO IDEA GETTING A TEAM WHO JUST WENT 6-7 READY TO GO 12-0 WAS "CUPCAKES". (I'm not saying they are going to go 12-0, but that's definitely the mindset Urban is trying to instill in this team) I basically listed everything Urban has done since he got hear, and according to you, most of it is "cupcakes".

"Yes, we know you are all over Urban's private parts and nothing will ever change that"- I'm all over Urban's privates because I don't expect him to interview all 81,000 fans who attended the spring game and have some measure of control over each and every one of them, even after the spring game when they went out on the town?

As for my statement on why I am talking about Urban's family contract, which a few people seem to be struggling with, I made it because situations like this normally take a while to get under control. Even something as simple as a paper or project in school has forced me to skip a lunch or work way into the night. If Urban has to call eleven committed players and assure them that this was an isolated incident and certainly doesn't portray OSU as a school, along with all the other prospective recruits Urban wants, I thought it was a valid thought that Urban might have worked an hour later than supposed to. Or maybe he skipped lunch or a workout to call one more recruit. These dumb thoughts tend to run through my head. Maybe I should get it checked out.

Holy crap dude. Where in the original post did I show concern for Urban's lack of control over Waugh? If you would please direct your attention up to the top of the page, you will see in my second sentence I made reference to Urban's lack of control of Waugh. If you closely examine the sentence you will see that I was not making a concern over the fact that Urban couldn't banish this sex offender to the depths of Ann Arbor, no no no, I was simply stating that the lack of control probably made Urban mad. Urban has to deal with this crap, and yet he knows he couldn't do anything to stop it.

This is quite similar to the theorem in the field of online forum creation : "A post in good nature will always be taken out of context, unless acted on by the original poster." I thank you for your time in this lesson of "How to read a sentence," have a good night.

I personally am sorry for ThirdLegLouie's misinterpretation of the English language and I hope that lesson helped clear things up for him.

What's ironic about all of this, is that I just realized you completely misunderstood what me and the OP were saying. We weren't saying Urban should have control over every single fan. We were saying that there was no way Urban could control this guy, and it must have angered him/stressed him out that something he can't possibly control or monitor resulted in the decommiting of a top prospect.

I get how you could have been decieved by the wording, but I'd have to imagine you'd sense that's not what he (and I) meant after responses.

P.S. You did violate the commenting policy in your post, so the last part of that paragraph is a bit humorous.

This will be my last post regarding this discussion.  Again, your posts stand in stark contradiction to one another.  In regards to NCAA sanctions and this Waugh character, there is almost nothing comparable between the 2 in the least.

UM WAS deep into recruiting his first class at OSU in December when the NCAA announced OSU's punishment yet this is 'cupcakes' in your opinion?!  ThirdlegLouie most appropriately addressed this issue and the immediate impact it had on UM and the coaching staff.

The potential ramifications of the NCAA sanctions were HUGE issues in recruiting and this staff handled the issue so professionally that it may have appeared to be cupcakes.  It most certainly was not.  That's partly why I am so excited about this coaching staff.  They have earned my trust in handling such matters and in the quality of young men they are recruiting.

"I mis-spoke when I said "first" issue. I should have just said anyone who thinks this isn't an issue is in denial, leaving out the "first" part, because whether its the first, or second, or third, or whatever issue for Urban is a matter of opinion. You should have also left out "terribly ignorant" for the record.  As for issues UM faces at OSU, this one is a one-time event that can and has most likely been handled.  In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't compare to what this staff faced just last December or what they will face in the coming months.  Go Bucks!

I heard AA's parents weren't even at OSU with him? Any truth to this. If true, how involved is the staff with a recruit after the football festivities have ended for the day? Seems a little off if his parents didn't accompany him to the unofficial visit and expect him to be Tebowing at 9 in front of his bed without any parental supervision.

Sounds like AA'S daddy has some serious control issues. Truly after reading the back and forth on this thread trying to prove whos right and whos wrong all I can say is this.....Arguments on the internet are always going to be misinterpreted by at least if not more than 1 person because no one can see the body language or see the looks on the others face when typing the conversation. Also imo I think Urb's did exactly what he could have and should have by phoning all the recruits. What more could he do in that situation? It wasn't like this Waugh character had a "sexual predator" shirt on........

A University of Michigan fan walks into a dr's office and takes off his hat revealing a frog sitting on his head, The doctor asks "how can I help you?" The frog replies "I've come here to get this wart removed from my butt"<
