How many scholarships do we have for 2014? I know we still have reduced scholarships, but also have more players leaving (I think). It seems like there is a lot of interest from a lot of guys and I just wanted to know.
no Hodge... don't think about it as if we lose 3 scholarships each year, but that we can only have 82 players for the next three years.
So, that means we had 3 less players in the 2012 class to drop down to 82. The 2013 class is the same size it would have been regardless of sanctions since we are already at 82 and are just replacing the seniors/early entrees/transfers. Same for 2014. So in 2015 we will be allowed to go back to 85, giving us a bonus 3 more scholarships ontop of the normal replacement numbers. I expect 2015 to be a MASSIVE class, but would not be surprised to see UFM bank a couple of those schollies.
@ Hodge - total is reduced from 85 to 82 = 3. That the reduction is for three years is where you get 9. But when the restriction is lifted it will bring us back up from 82 to 85 - so a gain of 3
I might be wrong on this, but I thought the maximum number of National Letters of Intent you could accept in a given year was 28, and that's including 3 early enrollees. Without EE's, the max is 25 per class. In other words, OSU won't be able to have a 30-man class to replenish their depth - they'll still have to do it over a few years.
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that having more than 28 spots available because you're coming off NCAA sanctions is not going to count as extenuating circumstances...
...versus, like, say, half the team dies in a bus accident or something.
From what I have seen, the extenuating circumstances simply means that you have to prove that you have the scholarships available before you sign that amount of players. It was initiated to stop teams from oversigning players. I see no reason as to why they would decline a request to come up to the maximum allowable scholarships.
On the other hand this might be a good opportunity to balance the class sizes a bit...
tough crowd, 703. But yes, i acknowledge that is the maximum (also the NCAA max, I believe). Yet 28 x 4 still = an extra class every 4 years. Bama's last 4 classes 30, 28, 26, 26 = 110, a full 25 over the 85 allowed to be on scholly at once. Ours total 86, I think, from 2009-2012 (i got 19,19,23,25, could be off a couple)
When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."
oops... my bad... mixed up my numbers for a second... though I think we can get permission to sign however many we want if there are proven scholarships open (ie we won't be able to sign anyone unless there is a scholarship available AT THAT EXACT MOMENT as approved by the B1G offices)
Currently 14 Juniors on scholarship I believe, so another year similar to 2013. However 2015 will be huge, as 27 sophomores are on scholarship
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
27 sophomores, plus no more sanctions in 2015 right? 30 spots plus attrition.. wow look out
@DMC - Wouldn't it be 9 more? Since we lost 3 a year for 3 years, and all those classes will still be on scholarship? A class of 36....Jesus.
More realistically, we'll have some exits from that class in the next few years, so it'll probably drop down to ~20, but we'd still have the 9 extras.

Cause I couldn't go for three

you are very very wrong... I think 35 is the max that the B1G allows with 3 EE's...

No, he is very right. 28 is the hard cap in the Big Ten. 25 is the soft cap (meaning any above will have to be early enrollees).
I thought that a team could request for more due to extenuating circumstances (i.e. having more than 28 spots available).

@Rampage, in the SEC 35 in the minimum you can sign, that may be the source of some confusion

osubias: The SEC's maximum has been lowered to 28.
