Tracy Sprinkle?

No disrespect to Sprinkle, but considering how we have SO many recruits that are cream of the crop, does Urban tell him he can't take him? Say Pocic, Lazard, Bosa, Anzalone, Love, Gibson, Heuerman, Quick commit? That puts it at 18 with Sprinkle. What about Green, Bell, Foster, Smith, etc etc? I know some recruits, unfortunately will be left out, but do you think Sprinkle is in this class come NSD?

Yes 100% trust the staff if they weren't convinced they wouldn't have taken the commitment at this point in the game.

First of all, there's only 15 schollys for this class with only 5 still open, and I think 4 of those are already taken by Bosa, Anzalone, Love and Gibson.

If anybody declares for the draft, they won't make their intentions known until next January after the season ends. There might be academic casualties that open schollys sooner though. My point is that we're probably gonna sit on 15 commits (including Sprinkle) until January.

The rest of the guys we're looking at right now will be long gone by next January.

There will definitely be more than 5 spots left for you guys.  Heuerman and Lazard will take two spots, as well.  Minimum of 18, probably more.

Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

With no postseason play this year, we could know about who is going pro by early December.

They would not have taken his commitment if they didn't think he was worthy, no matter who else wants to come on board...that is why there are "committable offers" and "non-committable offers"....if they wanted to wait and see they would have told him to hold off

Hail don't be so sure about Lazard.....It seemed like it was a matter of days before he pulled the trigger, but now "WVU and Miami are really pushing hard for me so I'll wait"? Doesn't make sense. Yes, I know a kid can come home and come down from the high of a trip, but I have a feeling the staff asked him to wait a little bit

I think we take 18-20. I trust Urban as far as Sprinkle goes. Its been said many times Malcolm Jenkins Aj Hawk Eddie George Terry Glenn, all guys not ranked high coming out of highschool

mark may wins douchebag of the year... again

I'm not a fan of the negative vibes people are showing around the Sprinkle offer/commit. If anything this is the kind of pickup that excites me.

The doubt seems due to a preliminary star rating based solely on nobody knowing who this dude is? On that, the Dispatch points out:

"Elyria coach Kevin Fell said that’s misleading because Sprinkle was a virtual unknown until he had 80 tackles, eight sacks and 25 quarterback hurries as a junior...“He had no rating at all. The only rating he had was after Ohio State offered. Then it was like, ‘Who is this guy?’ ”

Plus apparently he's only played on D for one year.

If there's one state where our staff should have an inside beat on undiscovered talent, it's Ohio. I'm not saying he's a guaranteed big time performer in S&G, but "three star" recruits are a dime a dozen and with a strong opportunity to fill out the rest of our class with "four stars", you better believe there's good reason we went after this kid so early in the game. I haven't followed recruiting closely in the past, but I wonder if there was similar negative buzz around Hawk or Jenkins?

The bottom line for recruiting is that we'll have, barring any academic issues in the fall, 15 available scholarships until January. Anybody beyond commit #15 that we're looking at right now is going to be long gone.

Whoever we sign beyond 15 is probably going to be somebody that we're not talking about at all right now.

Assuming that Love, Gibson, Bosa and Anzalone have locked up 4 of the remaining schollys, who is commit #15? I'm going with an OT with Heuerman going elsewhere.

If he accepted his commitment and then retracted it, that would be very SEC of him.

Do we forget just a few months ago we were over our scholly limit? No issues there anymore.

Remember this kid has PSU and MSU offers from 2 ppl that are considered some of the best D-line evaluaters. Also had an offer from Arkansas and supposively Georgia and South Carolina were about to offer before he committed. Remember this is OHIO talent which is one of the best states at producing college football players . Trust Urban he is a better talent evaluator than all of us

I am not sure why everyone is worried, especially this early on, about how many schollies are available and who will be left out or not. Guess what, not going to get ALL of the top talent in the nation. Hate to burst everyones bubble, its a fact! So don't fret yourselves over it and think the sky will fall. I am certain, just like last year and many previous years, this will be a great class with the players they end up with. Didn't end up with Neal and Diggs last year amongst others, still a strong class right?

I am very happy with the commits right now and I am certain UFM is, even Sprinkle(the kid showed them something to get an offer. Some kids we like don't even have that). Why worry about a kid who hasn't decided that he wants to be a buckeye or not and think anything but great things about a kid who made the choice that he wants to be a buckeye here and now! I would much rather have a 3 star who is ALL BUCKEYE than a 5 star who doesn't know what he wants because all he is thinking about is how much money he is going to make in the NFL.

The Urban train is moving, better get on while you can or guess what, you will be standing there with a ticket in hand and nowhere to go.

oh yeah, if you are truly wondering how many Scholarships are available in 2013, there are 1,000,000,000.01 schollies available! There, does that answer your question? Now stop trying to figure it out in April!

I'm not being negative because of his star rating at all, I'm just wondering because our D-Line is set. For years. I'm not saying since he his only three stars, he shouldn't commit or Urban shouldn't take him. Was just pointing out we have other areas that could be upgraded.

Terwilligins's picture
Terwilligins on 19 Apr 2012 - 6:54pm #

That's probably even more reason to believe this dude's a stud. Our D-line is already so rock solid there's no way Urban offers him unless he's one of those can't-turn-down types. Maybe I'm wrong, but I prefer to believe that if this coaching staff wants him, we'd be foolish to think any other opinion is more trustworthy.

Squirrel Master's picture
Squirrel Master on 19 Apr 2012 - 8:23pm #

Future, I wasn't saying you were down on the kid. I was speaking in general. I was just trying to point out that if we start worrying about how many schollies are left, its a long summer. If Meyer is comfortable with having 15-16 commits before summer, I think he believes in the recruits that have verballed and won't sweat the ones that he didn't get. It could drive you mad if you try to figure out how many players can be recruited when there is alot that could happen.

I absolutely believe Urban thinks his kids are the best of the crop. I don't think he would ask one to step aside because another decides he wants to come aboard.

@THIRDLEGLOUIE Great article! Just because he might not have as many stars as other recruits doesn't mean a thing. Sometimes as fans we look way too much into the star ranking system. Give the guy a shot if he really wants to be a part of buckeye nation.

Squirrel master, you hit it right on the head. They offered him no more than a few weeks ago, and he jumped on the opportunity. He may not have a big name now, but he obviously has the passion and potential that urban was looking for. And he is obviously 100 percent buckeye. Ill take the guy who wants to be here, is homegrown and that the coaching staff feels strongly enough about to give the opportunithy to. Every time.

Buckeyejason's picture
Buckeyejason on 20 Apr 2012 - 3:47pm #

So because his name doesn't have 4 or 5 stars next to it..that means he isn't worthy for an offer? Ahh people still brain washed by the whole recruiting world hype. If the staff sees potential in him then that's all that matters really. We would've never had a lot of big time players like Hawk, Lauranaitis, Malcolm Jenkins etc. if we just offered guys that were deemed "4 and 5" star recruits.

Buckeyejason- it has nothing to do with stars. Not even close. My whole point was say Bell wants to commit but we don't have a spot. With our D Line being an absolute beast, would Sprinkle be worth more than Bell? I would rather have Bell, I'm sure most would agree. Even though his highlight tape wasn't long, I wasn't impressed. At least, not for him to commit so early. I would have told him to wait. Just IMO.

ThirdLegLouie's picture

@FUTUREBUCKEYE- The point you are focusing on ("My whole point was say Bell wants to commit but we don't have a spot.") isn't well thought out because it's asked under the premise that the staff is ignorant of the schollie numbers.  Do you really think that this staff is so clueless that they have given no thought to holding a spot specifically for the kids at the top of their board (like Bell, Bosa, Pocic)?

THIS STAFF HAS NO PROBLEM GIVING OUT NON-COMMITTABLE OFFERS- IF THEY ACCEPTED TRACY SPRINKLE'S COMMITMENT, IT'S BECAUSE THEY WANTED HIM. THEY KNOW THE SCHOLLIE NUMBERS BETTER THAN ANYONE.

It's hard to take your posts seriously. Your dislike of Sprinkle "has nothing to do with stars. Not even close," it has to do with you not being "impressed" with his highlight tape (which is approximately 30 seconds of film). After seeing 30 seconds of film, you feel confident to say "I would have told [Sprinkle] to wait". All I can say is that I'm glad the staff doesn't "judge a book by its cover" so to speak, like you did, and based their evaluation on hours of game film.

I saw anther Melvin Fellows in that highlight film. Hope he isn't as injury prone. People are saying that this kid has an unlimited amount Of potential for Beastness.

Thirdleg, we differ on opinion, that doesn't give you the right to be so condescending towards me. I never said the staff was ignorant about our schollies at all. Your putting words into my post. & yeah, they have spots reserved for the top, but we have more "top" than schollies available. That's ALL I'm saying. If I came down to a Bell or Cravens type player over Sprinkle, I would take Bell. I do not hate Sprinkle. But 30 seconds in other top players highlights is enough for me to say "wow" I just didn't see it. Telling him to wait is not judging a book by the cover, I just felt that our D line is very good. I would try to upgrade other areas. I'm not upset we have Sprinkle, he can turn into a very good player. It does not matter to me if you disagree with me, but to be so patronizing in your post was a little over the top.

Also, in a different thread you stated you were not sold on Lazard yet. So, since I'm not sold on Sprinkle, you attack me yet you are not sold on Lazard? If Lazard commits, will you say you wished we went after the guard Rodgers? Every one doesn't have to be over zealous about a player, it differs in opinion. That's the last I'm saying about it.
