due to teams accomplishments from his coaching.
or would it be better to have a 4 way script OHIO with Bruce, Cooper, Tressell and possibly Matta dotting "I"s
or a 4 way script with Archie, Speilman, Pace and Troy Smith dotting "I"s
I would love to see Tressel dot the "I", as well as Archie, Speilman, Pace and Smith.
EDITED: to correct spelling mistake

Archie should be the next b/c of what he has done both on and off the field for OSU, before Tress IMO.
No.
EDIT: Just to be clear, no to JT dotting the i. At least not for many years. I don't even think he should be there if they honor the '02 team this year. Maybe at a 20 year reunion, but it's too soon now.
Pace has my vote. Wouldn't mind seeing Jt at the game but should not dot the "I" though.
I like to believe that my best hits border on felonious assault.
JACK TATUM
I have to agree with Faux..I love Tress but I think if that happened the National Media would have a field day with it. I can see them taking it as far as if it were Jerry Sandusky comming back to Penn and getting some sort of recognition.
I think Buckeye fans would be all for it but it would bring un-needed attention to a program that already has enough haters.
Tressel* should not dot the I for a very long time.
October 20th: National Kenneth Guiton Day
HELL YES! At THE GAME this year.
I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.
I think Archie should be first then maybe some 80's/90's guys Pace, George, Glenn, Speilman, etc.. But the next in line from the recent era has to be Troy Smith I feel like he doesn't get enough love and the guy won the HEISMAN. A little off topic but does anyone know when Smith will be inducted into the Ring Of Honor/Have his number retired?
Regarding Tressel, I still think tat gate has been blown out of proportion even by Ohio State fans, and even posters on this site. The guy lied and he paid the price, he got fired (essentially) and got slapped with the show cause penalty for five years i.e. not coaching in college. That said I do agree it is too soon to have him dot the I. I think it would be appropriate to have him do it as soon as the NCAA penalties are up but not before that.
But to say he shouldn't be honored with his team that won the 02' National Championship is a bit to much. I think by and large Tressel's tenure was one of the most successful decades in Ohio State Football History. He has payed the price and the program while taking a few blows will likely come back stronger than ever. So to forget all that he did do well for Ohio State would be a big mistake. Especially in the context of honoring the 02' team which had nothing to do with tat gate. It wouldn't be honoring Tressel specifically but rather the whole team and I think he should but there. But thats just my opinion.
@Corveyer I don't think anyone has said he should not be honored. Just that it's too soon. My very best football memories are under the Tressel years.
I'm all for and would have no problem with Tressel dotting the i but i agree some time should pass first because of the haters and the missinformed

F THE MEDIA! THEY CAN SHOVE IT!
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
Only like 5 people have done this. I think Archie maybe. Tress no. Not for a while. Players from teams? No. It cheapens the honor. It's the biggest honor for anyone in Ohio and it should stay that way. I love all the Buckeyes but seeing guys like Springs, Pace, Galloway, Sullinger etc do it when they aren't double Heisman winners or the President or the first man on Mars cheapens the honor. There are a MILLION OSU grads who have contributed more to life than guys who made All American in the 90s and they also don't deserve the honor.
Griffin should be the next to Dot the I, in 10-15 years I would say Tressel should. Also Wexner is definitely deserving of Dotting the I.
If Buster Douglas can dot the "i", I have no problems with Tressel getting the honor. I like the idea of it happening after probation is up.
I'll be a little upset if Tressel and Clarett aren't present to celebrate the ten year anniversary of the national championship because they weren't invited.
List of people who have dotted the "i": https://tbdbitl.osu.edu/?action=a074
since the "I" dotting occurs at a football game, I don't believe honoring 2 time all-Americans, National Championship Coaches or Heisman winners cheapens the honor. If it's truely for all of Ohio, and not just for football fans in Ohio Stadium, they might consider scripting on the State Capitol lawn.
When is the shark scheduled to dot the i?
He should and he will, but probably not for about 5 years.
vacuuming sucks
Then why have exactly zero OSU football players dotted the I. It's a way bigger honor than being an All American which we've had almost 80. Then what about our other national champs in other sports etc. Soon it will turn into a farce. Like a team putting up Sweet 16 banners. Buster Douglas dotted the I with the alumni band. Only 5 times have people not in the band dotted the I with the student band. It's the most exclusive club in Ohio. Nothing should be done to tarnish that. At most one person a decade should be added to this club.
I would love to see Coach Tressel dot the I. Like Maestro I think it should wait for a while and then have him do it during the Michigan game or something. It still makes me smile how much Coach Tressel haunted them for a decade : )
Yes he should, but not just yet. Anyone who thinks differently has been drinking too much of the ESPN koolaid.
Slightly off topic but I still think OSU dropped the ball big time by not having Bo dot the I while he was still alive. Both Ohio State and M*ch*g*n wouldn't be the schools they are today without Bo to complement Woody and I think he should have been recognized for that.
"Anything easy ain't worth a damn." - Wayne Woodrow Hayes
Too soon. Also, I'm pretty sure both Tress and Archie have been offered before and they both declined.
Gordon Gee's signature is on my diploma. I'm proud of that. Class of 2008
Tressel should dot the I at this year's bowl game!..nfbs
GO BUCKS! BEAT MICHAGAIN!
Maybe someday, I don't know. I agree with the opinion that having a non-band member dot the i should remain a genuine rarity.
The idea that Tressel should receive this honor while the sanctions against the program are still in force is basically crazy, sorry.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
2 soon for tress... i also would like to see clarett and tressel get there acknowledgement for the 02 team
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
Gotta age that shit before it happens. Agree with Maestro -- at least 5 years.
Also, we can use the mean time to learn how to spell our former coach's name.
Taquitos.
As always; well played, Denny.
I'm with them, though, five years at the minimum. Time heals all wounds, and if we can justify letting Woody do it then I have no problem with Tressel getting his due.
I`m with the 5 year minimim. Speaking of Tressel, did anyone notice how many tatoos the college players in basketball have? Wonder how they paid for those ? I was shocked watching the tournament games at the amount of tats.
@Jfunk
No way Bo would've done it, just like there's no way Woody would've come to Ann Arbor to be recognized.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

Hail,
No way? I don't think you know enough about those two to be so emphatic as to what they would do if asked.
With respect to HAIL, courtesy of M Man in the forums:

I'm personally of the belief that after their careers, the both of them would have been up for appearing at either location--but only if they were honored together. Bo introducing Woody at the Big House, Woody introducing Bo at the 'Shoe--that kind of thing. Admittedly, Bo had more connections to Columbus than Woody to Ann Arbor, but I don't think hubris would have proved a deterrent for either man. They truly were the best of friends after their coaching days ended, personifying the rivalry they did so much to elevate.
Before the '06 game, we held a moment of silence for Bo in the stadium. Not to mention the Newport Music Hall giving him a send-off as well:
I don't think Tressel should be allowed to Dot the I. If TP can be associated with anything Ohio State for the next 5 years why the hell should Tressel be allowed to. Times were great with coach, he did a lot of great things, and he screwed up. He needs to stay up there in Akron for a while get used to his new digs, and Ohio State needs to keep moving away from him for a while. Epsecially, while they're on probation.
To each his own. Hodge, I could see it if they were honored together.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
~Bo Schembechler
It's ok with me, but preferably 10 + years from now. Actually, my neice is dotting the "I" at the OSU - skunk weasels game this year, so any other time than that! The whole family is flying in for the game and one big ass party. Gonna be fun!
"Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read." - Groucho Marx
Yes to Tress.... Just not yet. How bout the 15th anniversary of the '02 Championship? I think things will have settled more by then and the national media will be on to hating Urban Meyer and Tress dotting the "i" would be an afterthought to them.
And yes, James Patrick Tressel absolutely deserves the honor of dotting the "i". The man was more than a football coach. He was more involved with his community than any coach I can think of. The man raised countless dollars for charity and touched thousands of lives (and continues to do so). The only other two coaches I've ever known to be so involved with their university and communities outside of football were Joe Paterno and Bo Schembechler. It's not something coaches really do these days. Sure, they'll attend the cocktail parties and make a speech or two to help raise a few bucks, but very few of them do such things of their own volition like Tressel did. Giving back was part of his life. Tressel was a rare exception.
When TheHumbleBuckeye types, I read.
vacuuming sucks
An excellent thread... As a newbie to 11W, but a seasoned Buckeye, I have always seen dotting the I as sort of a "Lifetime Achievement Award" for the "most famousest of Buckeyes", as Samwise would say... Coach T is likely on his way to that status...eventually, and for all the good reasons mentioned. I think that Archie (who I wrestled against once in HS, btw) should preceed Tress based on his place in Buckeye lore and legend, as well as his body of work over MANY years.
Steelybuck54
@STEELYDAN - I think that Tressel would've proved even more famous if he had destroyed the one ring.
By the way--excellent band, that Steely Dan.
Yes, I think Tress should be asked to "Dot the I". I like the 15 year anniversary of the '02 NC but not because it's too early because would be cool and hopefullly scUm is a home game that year and he can do it then.
GO BUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hodge, I was at that Hate Michigan Rally. Considering what it was, it was really respectful.

I think they should allow Tressel to dot the i - 2020 at the earliest. When did Woody dot the i? I remember it was several years after he was fired. People eventually got over the punch and remember him today for how great of a coach he was. It's not like what Woody did was unforgivable, and what Tress did certainly is not unforgivable. There will be a day in the future where everyone will be over tatgate and remember just how much Tress means to OSU, and he'll get to dot the i.
Class of 2010.
NO.
why not, he didn't forward e-mails? Hell Woody punched an opposing team player and we still named the whole damn athletic facility after him, as mosst i loved JT and i honestly think that when it came to the political carrosel that is coaching a D1 program he was the fall man, shit runs down hill, but the low man on totem pole alwats gets the axe
~michaec5
He can do it the next time they play Akron..in his Akron vest...that would go over like a fart in church..
i think archie DEFINITELY should. theres no question in my mind there, but with tressel, im not sure. i think we should hold off a little while before deciding that. but, i dont think 99% of former players deserve the honor. archie is an exception, but a guy like clarrett, while a huge part of osu history, just isnt on the same level.
to sum up: archie: definitely. Tressel: maybe. Clarrett, spielman, etc.: no
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNjBhzgcrBk
I'd have to agree with Michaec5...If Woody's name is plastered over everything after punching a STUDENT, then Tress better get his due respect somewhere around campus. One screw-up doesnt erase his 10 years of michigan domination, BCS appearances and 3 National title appearances. Maybe there should be time to let it simmer a little though.
"Love my State, hate the football"
Yeah, I mean obviously, the scandal and stuff is too fresh right now. Time heals all wounds. I prefer to remember the good from Tressel, which to me strongly outweighs the couple of mistakes he made. Give it a few years, and hopefully years of great football success with Urban at the helm, and I think people will be more accepting of Tressel dotting the i. He is the second best coach this school has ever seen.
I'd love to see Archie dot the i, and Spielman as well.
Class of 2010.
According to Maurice clarretts twitter a few months back, invites for a 10 year NC celebration had been sent out by the university. Apparently they "forgot to send two invites". Mo-C and Tress.
IMO I'd like to see both of them in attendance. Clarrett actually came back to OSU on his own dime to restart his education before being picked up by Omaha.
Whoops, off topic...anyway, I think years down the road coach tress could dot the I...but not for a whole!
"Have you earned your buckeye today?"
^^^I also heard Krenzel mention on THE FAN that there were no such invites sent out.
JT could dot the "i" at the Spring Game and I would have no problem with it.
Good to know maestro. Thanks! I was of course just repeating what I had read!
"Have you earned your buckeye today?"
@faux_maestro thanks for that utube post. Thats the first ive seen of Woody dotting the i
