It seems that mike adams tested positive for marijuana usage. my question for you all, is do you care? I'm very biased in being both a buckeye fan who tries to ignore any of our wonderful school's shortcomings, and someone who is in favor of legalization of marijuana, but this doesn't bother me particularly much.
I hate that it gives the trolls on ESPN more fodder, but if i'm honest, it doesn't bother me. What do you think? And do we think that marijuana, alcohol or (hopefully not) other drugs are rampant on the football team? I personally don't think it is, marijuana is unique in that it doesnt have many negative side effects, and allow you to train at full capacity the next day. any thoughts?

I don't care about marijuana, as long as it doesn't adversely affect an athletes performance. There are legal substances that are worse for a person as well.
So, as long as an athlete does not abuse marijuana to the point it hurts their performance, I don't care.

not against it in the least bit but you have to be completely ignorant even testing the waters with it if you know you have to be drug tested for NFL teams
"Winter is coming" - Urban Meyer
Unfortunatly I'd have to disagree with you on the usage.... Its probably used by over 50 percent of the team.... probably a much higher percentage. Its what football players do... I played college ball for 4 years and was one of maybe 10 guys on my team who didnt smoke. It just happens. Not before games but during the week it would. My question is how can you be that dumb to smoke leading up to the combine when you know they test. Which probably explains why he was suspended half the season.

It's a retarded test. If someone wants to smoke pot, let them at their own risk. It's crazy that in 2012, pot is still illegal. Luckily I live in California, where it's not illegal:)
It doesn't bother me at all personally but it just proves that Adams is as dumb as a box of rocks. He already had the stigma of tatgate (overblown but this is the age we live in) and now this. NFL teams look hard at character issues so this will probably drop him on the draft. Hope that joint was worth at least $250,000 to him
"You're pissed because we went after a committed guy? Guess what, we got 9 guys who better go do it again," said Meyer. "Do it a little harder next time."
Personally I dont think smoking it is a big deal especially if it helps your overall well being - I'm sure thats how most people feel. The reason owners/teams/the leauge cares is because it is ILLEGAL. If it were legal, I doubt people woudl care much. Its also hard to justify spending millions of dollars of someone who might get arrested .

yea, i have to acknowledge that nybuckeye and buckeyebrown have good points. it doesn't bother me that he smokes, because i've met plenty of intelligent people who smoke habitually. however, i do question his intelligence for smoking so close to the combine. i mean, this is his livelihood. its one thing for some random freshman in college with no particularly huge career prospects to indulge a little bit, and honestly, even a football player not planning on going pro this season. but once you know that you've got a couple million dollars waiting for you in the nfl, its worth laying off the green for a little while. hell, i even took a hiatus before i applied to work at the rpac...theres a lot less pressure swiping buckids than protecting nfl qb's
It doesn't bother me because Adams is no longer our problem. What a moron, seriously. It's all fine and well to be a fan of pot, or thinking it's not a big deal or whatever, but the bottom line is, most jobs you get screened for drugs, including pot. The difference is Adams probably still gets a job somewhere. If I test positive at my job I'm fired and I would deserve it for being a moron and doing something I know could cost me my job anyway.
The debate isn't should it or shouldn't it be legal. No, the debate is how big of a moron is a player who knows the league tests for a host of different drugs prior to the combine and randomly throughout the season, yet that player still chooses to do it.
I know a guy who played in the NFL. He hung out at a local bar that my wife and I did. If we were going to do shots, he couldn't do anything with RedBull. If he would get tested the morning after having those drinks, he would have a banned substance in his system and fail the test. So, is that idiotic too? Probably so, considering everyong can buy a redbull at any gas station, but bottom line is they are very aware of substances they are allowed and not allowed to have. If they choose to use those substances well, that's their own problem.
He'd been caught with paraphernalia at OSU as well as a small amount on his person. Honestly I could care less if anyone smokes marijuana, it puts 1/4 the amount of tar into your lungs that cigarettes do, and it actually has medicinal purposes. This incident just points to Adams's lack of common sense at this point. You know that before the draft teams are going to have you tested for everything under the sun. Lay off the ganja until you've been drafted, in the words of Cris Carter "C'mon Man!"
BTalbert, i actually agree completely. i let my own biases affect my thinking. adams definitely was in the wrong here. the debate isn't legalization, its following the law. as a public figure, adams is held to a higher standard than the rest of us. just like if a senator smoked marijuana, (s)he would have to resign, adams is lucky that this will not cost him much (although 300k is not exactly chump change). hopefully he'll learn to control himself, and perhaps take a couple years off the drug until retirement. hopefully if this is a character flaw (i.e. him feeling entitled to do whatever he wants because he's a star), he will be humbled when he gets to the pros, and gets influenced by people who stay completely focused on their careers.
also, to the whole "its not our problem anymore," while unfortunately, i agree that its nice that this wont affect his time with osu, i still like to think that he will be supported by osu fans and folks everywhere, and not let them portray him in a misleadingly negative light
Tat-gate, low bench press, weed...Seems very high maintenance to me. I would have to pass on him. He just doesn't seem to have the drive to be the best.
No surprise from a guy who's Twitter handle was a Mary Jane reference. I bet the Steelers take him in the first round.
I would perfer players to smoke weed then drink alcohol. But its still dumb to use something that you know will get you in trouble especially when we are talking about millions of dollars.
It's good to be home.
PharmBuck nailed it earlier, "dumb as a box of rocks." He was being discussed as a borderline 1st round candidate. I imagine that those 1st round dollars have just gone up in smoke. Guy's mistakes have cost him millions.
I'm pretty sure 1/2 the NFL players smoke pot and they still play well on sunday
As buckz4evr alluded to, I think the question becomes, at what point do the small issues add up to something substantial? He probably (reasonably) thought the tattoos wouldn't affect his draft stock, but a pathetic effort on the bench very well could. So if you think your stock is sliding even a little bit, wwwwhhhhhyyyyyyy would you risk it further with something so idiotic and avoidable.
@otrain...The issue isn't about the use of pot, but doing it before the combine. Would you smoke pot before an interview if you knew they were going to test for it? Especially if the job you were applying for payed millions of dollars?? We're not talking a week-end Wendy's job!
I just do not understand. Wait a a few weeks, get drafted, make millions, then smoke if you want to and try to dodge the NFL rules.
I am not getting in a debate about the drug itself ( I personally don't smoke anything, but I do drink alcohol, so I refuse to act like I am above this behavior) but I do agree with anyone in here that thinks this is just a dumb move. He already has personal issues that clubs are looking at.
Maybe the Browns will get a deal on this idiot later than they should in the draft haha.
@buckz4evr he didn't necessary smoke it right before the combine. He could have been a heavy user his first few years at OSU and stopped. That stuff accumulates in your fat cells. Him working out real hard before the combine could have caused him to burn off this fat and hence why he tested positive or he could just be stupid and smoked before the combine who knows lol
Like most of you said, the point is it's illegal in the NFL and he got busted for it.
It bothers me. It is yet another piece of evidence of what a bumbling idiot Mike Adams is/was. The Tat 5 cannot be forgotten about soon enough. :-\
@Saturday - Literally, up in smoke. He is dumb as a box of rocks, slight advantage to the rocks. Dude just doesn't care enough to earn a few extra million dollars. Must be nice to have those problems. Probably has Santonio on speed dial as part of their wake and bake team.
^Ok, this made me laugh in the middle of my bio lecture.
I think its obvious pot use is prevalent in college sports and in the pros. I don't know how you police it effectively, as it seems drug tests only are as effective as how teams or leagues carry out punishments for failing them.
I think its failry obvious that Mike Adams is not a smart guy. And the guy has shown a lack of character and a lack of discipline. His track record speaks for itself. He's done plenty of dumb stuff over the years. We can pass it off as him being a 'kid', but once you are 18, you are considered an adult and are responsible for decisions you make. He chose to smoke weed and who knows if he knew about the upcoming drug test or if he even cared about it.
Regardless of what your thoughts are on pot use, Mike Adams didn't do himself any favors in the draft by failing this test.
It always bothers me when players screw up like this. You are going to be paid millions of dollars to play football, and you do something dumb like this? It amazes me still how some athletes just do not care. Period.
It's true... We really are a bunch of nuts!
Go Bucks!
It doesn't matter if it has any side effects, or if there are legal things that do worst damage to your body. It's illegal, and if they get caught with enough of it they can be arrested, which hurts the team.
I like to believe that my best hits border on felonious assault.
JACK TATUM
Of course his slow response times as defenders were blowing past him and his lack of motivation could of been pot driven too.
I wonder if JB Shugarts is/was a pot smoker? That dude was good for what 3 or 4 false starts or holding penalties a game? I wonder if all that was connected to his reefer use? Or was he just not that good?
It's not Mike Adams fault that he has an annual 4/20 week celebration instead of just the usual 4/20. It's tradition!
Come on man.... College grad and you don't know how long marijuana stays in your system.
Chould cost you alot of money.
@BuckeyeChad - If it was legal, would pot smokers have anything else to talk about?
I don't understand how people keep defending him as a "good kid" just because he's from central Ohio. He's had NUMEROUS chances and keeps proving himself to be an idiot.
I have to say i'd prefer they didn't just for mental awareness reasons but it dosen't really bother me. I stopped playing after high school but i hung out with alot of guys on the OSU football team when i was a student there. Outta of the 15 or so guys i hung out with and the others i became aquainted with...98% of em were smoking regularly. I know cause i was participating with them and i'll never name names, but some of were major contributors and i don't think it had an adverse effect on them. Cooper era for those wondering
With that said i think it inexuseable for ANYBODY especially a grown man to fail a drug test for employment. Com on Mike!
JB Shugarts needed to smoke some!! Slow his reaction time down so he actually starts when the ball is snapped!
As for Mike Adams, some people never learn until they end up at the Citgo! I swear, sometimes I think the good Lord blessed the wrong individuals with the size @ talent.
Are you positive?
"Here officer, hold my beer while I find my license."
Must be a slow day in the sports world. That's what I always say when marijuana is mentioned. Though I love the irony of stories like yesterday and today, considering what tomorrow is. :D
It looks bad for Adams not because he smoked pot, but because he smoked pot so soon before he was tested, which he knew he would be. It's kind of silly, if you ask me, to do that. That's like if you're getting a blood test or something and are told to fast after midnight, and then you decide at 2 AM to go get some fourthmeal, knowing the situation. Why would you do it? Just fast, do the test, then you can eat...or in Adams' case, then smoke a fattie. Adams has a little bit of egg on his face. I don't think any less of him, but it's the truth. It's an idiot test more than it is a drug test, and he failed it.
Class of 2010.
Many people are missing the point that some have alluded to. It isn't whether any of us think Marijuana is acceptable to use. It has nothing to do with it being worse than or better than alcohol or cigarettes. I don't care how many other people are doing it. If I am investing millions of dollars into a man to protect my multi-million dollar quarterback I expect him to be reliable and dependable. He can't be that sitting behind a jail cell nor can he positively represent my organization when his personal life brings discredit to my team. Regardless of what anyone thinks, it is illegal except in select states and prohibited by the NFL. I rooted for him after tatgate because of all the things I heard about him. I heard he matured and did as he was asked and that he was a good leader. Flip, he was just playing the game and biding his time. The only honorable thing he did was to come back and face his sentence and finish last year. I am pretty much done following this cat. Just like TP I'll pay attention out of curiosities sake, but I could care less what direction his career takes him.
I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.
Guys, a lot of athletes do a lot of Mary Jane. This isn't surprising, just stupid lol. You know it's coming!
Recruitbuck, your statement is true but I tire of the everyone does it shtick.
I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.
What a dumbass move right around draft time Mike. Here's to you not being a 1st round pick.
And to the guy who said there's no negative side effects..LOL dude, almost anything..especially a drug has some type of side effect. Killing brain cells with rapid usage is one.
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
If the Raiders,49 ers, or the Chargers draft him,it won`t be an issuue because weed is legal in Cali.
If it's true - how stupid can this kid be? He was already automatically placed in the "character issues" category by some teams, with the suspensions from last year, etc. ... the last thing you would want to do is test positive for illegal drugs. He probably just cut the teams that were interested in half at least...and cost him self a lot of $$$...he was originally projected as a 1st rounder...I think he'll no doubt slip to the 2nd round now.
Very very unwise decision.
I would never draft a kid who tested positive for pot....tells me he has a tendecy to be defiant, and open to being too passive and lazy.
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
That's probably why Ricky Williams had a terrible career.... wait.
MSHAF weed as a recreational drug isn't legal anywhere. It can be sold medicinally in California
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
