Everett Withers is down in Durham watching McNeil work out today. If the staff wasn't planning on taking another TE besides Baugh they wouldn't waste their time. At this point I think it's McNeil or none but this will go a far way in making McNeil a priority again.

Interesting. I am fine with 1 TE, and I am fine with two TE. The TE's that we are recruiting are able to go out and split in the WR position, taking at least a two-for-1. Can also block, mismatch with LB's, and very good speed/athleticism. Mcneil is good, and Baugh is good. So I am fine with either scenario.
I love McNeil, and I think both him and Baugh will be in the NFL 1 day ... I think McNeil will be better then Heurman as well ... I only hope that we learned from this to not put all our eggs in one recruits basket when there are others that could be had ... I think we gave Mike all the power in this recruiting process ... When we kinda backed off McNeil ... I can completely see McNeil not coming because of that, but if he signs on I think he is going to be a VERY good 1 for us ...
I like McNeil as well, but would have given the spot to Heuerman if he wanted it. Hopefully McNeil isn't too put off by what may have went down because I think he can be a good player. I would love to get a TE because, while we have a lot of bodies at TE even after Stoneburner leaves, I'm not sure at all what they are capable of doing. I liked what I saw from Vannett but Jeff Heuerman didn't even play in the spring game. Also, with the traditional fullback being essentially erased from the offense and being replaced by an h-back, an extra TE or 2 isn't such a bad thing.
Jeff Heuerman was injured, which is why he didn't play. I'm sure he'll be ready to go this Fall.
I also like McNeil, and I'm sure the staff didn't cut off communication with him after Baugh's commitment. It seems clear Mike Heuerman had an OFFER, so the staff at least had to wait until he made his decision before they could consider taking another TE. I would hope Josh understands that.
As others have said, guys like Baugh and McNeil seem to be the more athletic type of TE who could be used out wide much like Stoney will this season.
Sorry Bass I didn't mean to imply that Heuerman didn't play for depth chart reasons or lack of talent, I re-read my post and saw it came off that way. I just mean that I didn't get to watch him at the Spring game so I'm still unsure of what he is capable of doing.
Agree with your thoughts in paragraphs 2 and 3.
No need to apologize, and I would have liked to see Jeff play as well. I guess we can't blame the staff for playing it safe with injured players. It just leaves us wanting more!
Is it Sept. 1st yet?
I never commented on Mike Heurman before because I knew he was good but I always thought McNeil had a bigger upside in the long run. Didnt this kid just start playing football a couple years ago?? I think he could develop into something amazing under Meyer.
I don't mind Urban and the staff still going after McNeil. If they want 2 TE's, lets get 2 TE's. Losing Heuerman to Notre Dame stinks, but if OSU can get McNeil, we would give us the #5 and #13 TE's in the country (according to Rivals). McNeil has offers from everywhere and the number keeps going up. He's a teammate of Jamal Marcus and knows Coach Withers well, so lets hope we can make a move on him and bring him to OSU.
Army, if I remember correctly, McNeil has only played football one year so far, so you'd think he has a very high ceiling.
McNeil is retweeting any and everyone who says anything remotely related to the Buckeyes right now. It's pretty clear he's excited.
Remember, he said via Twitter that about a month ago he met with his HS coach and was something like 90% sure of which school he'd go to (OSU). I don't think that has changed. Expect a commitment soon.
Keep in mind we have Vannett, Heuerman and Thomas (and obviously Baugh) on the roster for 2013; the fact that we are going after another TE should tell people what the staff thinks of those guys, IMO.
On the other hand, it seems that McNeil is the only other TE target regardless.
they compare McNeil to Antonio Gates....if he is 50% of Gates I want him
I could see Baugh being a moved around guy (a la Hernandez) and McNeil being a true on the line block and catch receiver
I would not mind at ALL if Mcneil signs with us. I won't go and say I didn't REALLY want Heuerman, but Mcneil isn't that big of a "step down" from him. If anything after watching the game film I came away equally impressed with both.
Surprised that the staff is taking two TE's in this class. That said I get excited by every unexpected move the staff is making. This early in 2013 recruiting year and with limited spots taking guys like Neal, Sprinkle, and McNeil at spots that aren't necessarily as big of needs as OL and WR must mean that staff is in love with these kids. I am particularly excited by anyone Withers is really going after he obviously had a knack at UNC for finding off the radar guys with huge upside then coaching them up to their potential. Just look at how many guys Withers coached at UNC that ended up getting picked in the first round. Will be very excited if he commits.
Does anyone have good links to McNeil's film? I have been having trouble finding it.
Absolute stud here.. Hopefully a buckeye by the end of the weekend

FYI: this is the same video that Third Leg posted above. He beat me to it.
It's amazing how well these guys (Baugh and McNeil) move at their size. The evolution of the TE position has been one of the more exciting things about football in recent years.
I really like his size listed at 6'5'' 240. He will be a mismatch for anyone trying to cover him.
He appears to be a pretty smart player, just based on his game film. He clearly knows how to shred zone coverage and simply sits in a couple of spots, catches the ball with his hands, then gets downfield. I'm sold.
