Hail mentioned this in a Buckshot, but I figured it might make for an interesting discussion:
So, let's say Urban stays retired and doesn't succeed Fickell. Stick with Fick? Do we learn to love Pellini or Dantonio? Are they even hired because they're coaching other Big Ten teams? Who would have been your choice?

Dont even want to think about this horrible nightmare situation
I wouldn't want Pelini or Dantonio. I know Pelini is an Ohio guy and played at OSU, but I'm not a fan of how he carries himself on the sideline or how he enteracts with his players. Other than Dantonio being on OSU's staff under Tress and helping win the 02 Championship, I don't much care for the guy.
I think the job of head coach was too much for Fickell. I never really thought the guy would be retained. He was operating with at least one arm tied behind his back because he was working with Bollman on offense and basically just keeping the seat warm for the next coach. If the season had gone better than it had, OSU would've had a tough decision, but I don't think the plan was ever to keep Fickell as head guy.
I know Tressel wasn't a big name guy when he came to OSU from Youngstown State, but I think chances are post-Tress OSU would've gone after a big name, bigger than Pelini or Dantonio.
Boise St: Petersen
My first choice was always:
I clicked on it... I regretted it immediately...
I think Fickell did a good job with what he had to work with, but I would not have hired him full time. My top choices would have probably been Mike Gundy or Chris Petersen, but I think both might have been tough to persuade - Gundy because he is coaching his Alma Mater and Petersen because of the whole "little sisters of the poor" thing.
Stoops would have been a rad choice, don't know if he'd have left Oklahoma for it, though. Not to mention, his postseason success probably would have landed his head on a stake if he was coaching here.
Would you rather have no scandal, no sanctions, etc. and we keep Tress or would you rather go through the last 16 months to get Meyer?
This is going to get juicy! I'll go with (B).
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

I say Mark Dantonio all the way (if we didn't get Urbz). Would much rather have him than Pelini or Stoops.
How firm they friendship...
What if threads already!? It's gonna be a long summer...
Larry Kehres Mount union football coach i think he has something like 13 championships at his level??
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
I love Larry Kehres, as well. He'd definitely be the Jim Tressel style "Dark Horse."
Kehres is getting up there in age and you would lose a lot a recruiting credibility initially.
Anyone consider Dabo Sweeney?
@redstorm
id take tressel. its not like tressel was a scrub, and it would be alot nicer if we didnt have to deal the with the last two years. meyer is fantastic, but so was tressel.
Petrino for sure!! Great back roads for the Harley and much of the staff already in place. lol
This is a great question. I'm not convinced that UFM was approached and agreed in principal prior to JT's fall thus had he not been available, would JT still be here? Did the NCAA force tOSU to fire him or was that all done by Wexner? Just asking.

Has anyone considered hologram Woody Hayes?
With all due respect, who cares! That's HISTORY & we live in the present & focus on the future. Urban is here to stay & he's definitely here to WIN & WIN BIG!
Shendig
wrong forum, oops.
When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."
I wouldn't want John Gruden, whens the last time he coached? Also, i dont think pro coaches can win at the collegiate level.
@GABUCKEYE haha yeah just looking for a reaction.
/sarcasm
The correct answer is Nick Saban. I mean Nick Saban was considering going to State Penn after Paterno was fired according to numerous reports.....right?

Hey, to be fair, before Urban was hired this was the single most incendiary topic on this site. People were pretty outspoken in their hatred of our new head coach. Lots wanted Fick to stick around, and even a few were convinced we could re-hire Tress. Just an interesting topic to look back on now, especially since damn near everyone here (including moi) is drinking the kool-aid.
I was all Urban from the get go but wasn't sure if he did want to come back to coaching or not. I like Fickell but nothing against him, he had Bollman attached to him. I would have been happy taking RichRod if it meant getting rid of Bollhog!
maybe...
Gerry Dinardo, of course.

Bobby Petrino
A serious answer... Kevin Sumlin
I guess the better question is -- who would Ohio State have hired? I've seen numerous threads asking fans who they wanted but I think the real question would be, who would've the university hired had they not got Urban?
Ha! I remember during those heated debates, some posters on here wanted Petrino.
Without getting Urban? Hmmm....
i'm not sure.

Seriously...I thought Beckman had a chance.
"Winning takes care of everything. - Woody Hayes"
I remember reading Glenn Mason would have been in the running... that would have sucked!! I only wanted Urban.
As hard as last year was, I'd stick with Fick with a new and improved coaching staff.
October 20th: National Kenneth Guiton Day
Gruden makes $4M+ per year doing a cake job. Not a chance he comes back to coaching. He just flirts to get another raise. I would have given Steve Addazio and Greg Schiano hard looks.
My picks if UFM didn't take the job -
1. Petersen
2. Schiano
3. Fickell ( a Fickell w/o Bollman, & being allowed to pick his own staff)
4. Beckman
(Stoops, Gruden & Saban aren't going anywhere)
And I would have taken Tressel & sanctions over UFM. I like what Meyer is doing, and I have high hopes. But NOTHING trumps an 8 - 1 record over scUM. I lived through Woody vs. Bo, and the pain of the Cooper years, so I will trade a victory over scUM above all else.

I would definitely say Peterson. However, I'm not sure if he'd ever even consider it. His name has been thrown around at a lot of schools and he hasn't budged.
Wow no Urban...hmm....
Definitely not Fick. He showed me after retaining Bollman that he didn't have the ability to be a head coach yet.
I like Pellini, but his anger management issues are too embarrassing.
Dantonio isn't high enough quality of a head coach.
I probably would've supported a Peterson (Boise St) hire, or maybe another Tressel-type hire that comes out of Division 2, etc. The Oklahoma St. Head Coach is pretty interesting as well.
@razrback16 I have a feeling Fickel had no choice in hiring/firing, PLUS who would you hire in June AFTER going through spring practice? Would learning a new offense in fall camp without spring camp to learn the basics really be a smart thing?
I don't understand the anti Dantonio posts. He was the mastermind of the 02 defense (which won the championship single handedly) and MSU sucked before he got there. He has 4 straight wins over tsun and great Ohio ties.
