A few thoughts on Mike Heuerman picking ND over OSU. Firstly I wonder if his decision wasn't based on possibly taking playing time from his brother? You don't see this kind of situation often but brothers playing the same position on the same team is pretty rare. Personally I'd want nothing to do with competing with my older brother at the same position. Secondly I thought that we really only need one TE in this class and I would have been happy with Baugh, Mcneil or Heuerman. I don't see it as huge position of need especially with limits on class size. I could be wrong especially if we take another TE ( Mcneil) but I think we should use that slot on another position, IMO the OL and WR/playmaker are much needed. Interested to hear if you all think my theory is crazy or not?

I say if the staff thinks McNeil is still a priority at TE, then go for it. But I do agree with you that there are other areas of need that should be addressed. I'm not too worried though, the coaching staff knows what they're doing.
I do have to say that ND is hitting the recruiting trail hot. But then again they always get top talent but never win I don't really understand it. Maybe its because they aren't in a conference and play to many hard teams. But Heurman is a good player wish he picked OSU but with Baugh already in its not to big of a deal.
Do they really play that many hard teams though? Michigan State has been decent for a couple of years but Michigan was bad at the same time. USC has been good, but really stanford has only been good for a couple of years. I'm just not that sure they play a harder slate than anyone else. I think playing Wisconsin, Michigan, MSU, Nebraska and PSU is a pretty hard slate. It's certainly not as hard as playing in the SEC or Big 12 South in my opinion.
I'm not losing any sleep over not getting a second TE. I will be slightly anoyed if we don't land Pocic plus another OL aswell as Quick or Gibson.
In response to BTalbert,
I go to Notre Dame, but grew up a Wisconsin fan so I can tell you, we play a schedule that on average is as hard as anyone in the nation plays, definitely as brutal as they play down in the SEC (or pro league south, whatever you prefer). The statistics back it up as far as strength of schedule too. I get upset every year because for some reason they refuse to schedule cupcakes who arent military academies, and those guys are pesky and not really cupcakes most year, I'd compare them to Illinois or Northwestern as far as consistency and usually being just on the edge of being decent.
ESPN has got a bit of a beef with us because of our contract with NBC, so they barely ever get to televise us and although we've sucked recently, we still have the largest fanbase in the country and it makes them all mad, so they pout and talk down on us, hence the general opinion that we're even worse than our current embarrasing state.
let's look at last year's ND schedule...USF, Pitt, Air Force, Navy, Wake, Maryland and BC. If not cupcakes, those are all pretty darn close.

2. TSUN

Honestly, I think he just went with his heart. I'm probably in the minority on this, but I really think Brian Kelly is a good coach and Notre Dame is on the up. Add a beautiful campus, strong academics, and great tradition and I think it's easy to see why students choose Notre Dame.
Gordon Gee's signature is on my diploma. I'm proud of that. Class of 2008
I just see Notre Dame continue to do the same thing every single season.. They'll win a big game or two, but then lose to a team that they absolutely have to beat (Navy, Boston College).
They continue to bring in strong recruiting classes but I think the combination of difficult academic standards and a tough schedule will continue to hold back the football program. It's a shame that they are essentially penalized for their academic standards, but the NCAA is becoming less and less concerned with the "student" aspect of the student-athlete.
Boston College has better Catholics than Notre Dame

Notre Dame has one of the toughest schedules in the country this year. USC, Stanford, Michigan, Michigan State, Navy(overseas), OKlahoma, and Miami at Soldier field.. Notre Dame might only win 4-6 games this year, but I wouldn't say they are terrible. I respect anyone that plays that many tough matchups. Their schedule is as tough if not tougher than ours. JMO
We play Cal (decent) UAB, Miami OH. We have some tough conference games, but none as hrd as USC or Oklahoma.
Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.
703Buckeye,
I guess I stand corrected!
I've been going off a 2009 survey by espn, but that wasn't very scientific. Not sure how reliable tv ratings are to compile fanbase numbers but this is by far the best attempt ive ever seen, thanks for the info!
Said it before, I'll say it again. That aforementioned NYT article is by no means an accurate portrait--they say so as much in the article. There is no way in Hell that Texas A&M has almost as many fans as Texas! That article is telling me that out of 25.5 million people in Texas--which is arguably the nation's most football-hungry state--less than one tenth root for the Longhorns? Gimme a break, and I'm not even accounting for their large national audience, either.
Take those ratings as a rough guess, nothing more, nothing less. Truth is the top 4 consists of some mix of OSU, UM, ND, and UT--and they probably fluxuate wildly as teams become more or less popular (for example, ND down, UM going up).
For what its worth, in the late '90s 'Brasky, Miami, and FSU would all be near the top as well. College football is so cyclical it's tough to really illustrate a perfect cross-section of its fans (especially since many hold multiple allegiances).
Per the article:
A couple more OL's, safety, and a couple playmakers at WR are the biggest needs and would round out this class perfectly. Although it would be hard to turn down Mcneils verbal I dont think its a big position of need.
